I am PISSED about hero shooters especially in a title as promising as this. Playing both tarkov and destiny with equally as much time spent I know what kind of customizable options bungie is capable of and it’s a shame that is not the case for marathon
Maybe enough whining online could help them change their stance, idk, but I totally agree 😄 hopefully the visual style stays the same, is my biggest concern
@@RicToneFrl I get games like marvel rivals coming out you play as a actual superhero but I don’t wanna play some lame default character as everyone else
I don’t understand why they think people want characters with constantly annoying voicelines as their way of expressing themselves when giving them THEIR OWN PERSONALITY AND CHARACTER is LITERALLY the best way to allow players to do so
@@noahmkv Not only is it an ordinary ip. It's one of the oldest and most narrative driven game made by Bungie. Despite how the games play and look, the storytelling is absolutely phenomenal.
You know what would be cool? A single player campaign with memorial characters, deep lore, and layers of conspiracy on top of conspiracy. Kind of like this one trilogy of games Bungie made back in the 90s called “Marathon”.
@@moritzkorsch9029 I think you'd appreciate even just the cryptic messages contained in the original Marathon trilogy, it's more beautiful than what their games can offer now.
Yep Fuckin' hate it. Banking on the popularity that Mandalore brought to the franchise I mean - look at Homeworld 3. The entire reason it basically became a game WAS because of Mandy's videos... but we got absolute d*gshit
They could have done it as a Destiny spin-off or just a new IP entirely. Using the Marathon IP just feels like desecrating a sacred burial ground. Not only is it antithetical to the history of Marathon as a pioneer in narrative shooter. It also basically signals that there is no chance of a true sequel or remake to the original Marathon games because they wouldn't want go draw attention away from their next live service cash cow. Milk milk milk.
Extraction shooter with customization sounded cool but a “hero extraction shooter” gtfo. plus a former valo directer is replacing someone who’s been w bungie since before CE…it’s not even bungie atp. Game is officially ruined.
@@santig.2113honestly I'm pretty glad I didn't hype the game in the first place considering they never even promised a fucking campaign, but now they're dispensing a guy from the fucking MYTH 2 days and replacing him with a fucking valorant guy. I can't believe I only heard this news now how is bungie so bad at doing the bare minimum nowadays wtf
I liked it at first. The whole concept presented was cool af, playing as printed synths for megacorps scavenging the planet. Thats why this fucking sucks, making it a hero shooter instead of customized characters fucking ruins the concept. I wanted my own little synths.
IM SO SICK OF HERO SHOOTERS. I was super excited for this game but now I'm honestly kinda over it. We'll see when I comes out but I would have much preferred having a customizable character. I have no problem tossing a few bucks to make MY character look exactly how I want.
Man just ditch the whole multiplayer aspect entirely and just make a proper Marathon single-player game already. I cannot believe they're wasting Marathon on a trend following multiplayer game.
Hero shooters definitely do not help with customization (because customization can only go as far as the hero’s niche allows, and it can’t overlap other heros’ niches). Plus hero shooters add another level of balance issues (not only do you have to balance the guns and gear, but now you have to balance the hero’s core abilities). This is a BAD idea all around. Chief wore a helmet for a reason, Rookie wore a helmet for a reason, Six wore a helmet for a reason.
I'm about halfway through my first playthrough of the first marathon. Idk too too much about the lore but I know it's intense. It feels like pretty despicable spit on the face on the insane innovation, community, and story of the original marathon trilogy
i think one of the reasons i fell in love with tarkov is BECAUSE my guy is a nobody. like he isnt anyone important, he literally got left behind and forgotten. PLUS, the blank slate player-character is great for immersion because that blank slate essentially becomes me, which makes me want to protect him and play better.
@@SpottedHareshe’s saying that making his own character allows him to imagine himself in that character’s shoes more easily. Playing as a “hero” character means he has to essentially pilot around someone else’s vision for the character rather than his own.
I guess hero shooters are cool, but I think this game’s art style and universe would make having customizable characters incredibly cool. I personally hope they go back on this decision, but I still think this will be a good game
@@riloegaming customizing a pre-made character blows in comparison to having ur own little guy, specially in the context of this game ;-; If they made class types instead of specific heroes it would be forgivable.
@@riloegamingthe people want to customize their own character, they don't want a replacement system for that, which is rumored to be a hero roster, which is way worse in term of custimization, because it has a set identity, which the people don't want.
The discrepancy between "Selecting from a group of heroes" and Hunt showdown, is that Hunt you still play as literal random generated 'no-bodies'. The MTX ecognizable "heroes" don't even stand out from the regular random hunters you can get from the recruit tab. What gets people worried is that "hero shooter" comes with a lot of baggage that is more than just "we removed individual character costumization for preset models." I.e. stats and abilities and perks tied to those "heroes." Even if players have a choice of choosing different ones. It is implied that play styles, equipment, abilities are tied to characters.
Of course. But if you look at the gameplay loop they’re planning for Marathon, it doesn’t seem it would work with true Hero mechanics, which is why I’m gonna HOPE that “selectable characters” is more cosmetic than anything, like Hunt’s legendaries
I hate heroes in game nowadays, just let us make a character and customize it like we want. And if you really want to make abilities just let us chose them
Turning Marathon into either of those things is just a straight-up tragedy. Game had the best subtle and thought-provoking narrative of any game trilogy I can think of, under the guise of an early gen 3D shooter
I want my own character, and character customization. There are too many games gunning for "hero" shooters. Battlefield 2042 went this route too. COD went this route. It is the status quo...
This games dead in the water for multiple reasons. One of the bigger ones (imo) it's taking them too long to bring anything out, I'm saying it now it's gonna be a disaster on release
I think its the idea of no customization that's got people thinking twice. If in the heroes there's some general customization it'd be an alright compromise
I can understand that sentiment but in pvp games like this that customization is kinda what people strive for in the late game it allows people to express themselves and it feels to good to have something to work towards that cant just be taken if you die it allows for a form of permanent progression that doesn't interfere with game balance
I just got into the finals and the character customization is literally my favorite part. Damn, hope this game isnt going to be a waste of cool world building and art styles.
In Hunt, killing the boss is kinda like capturing the point in a different game. It's just an incentive to get players to move around the map. PVP is not extra, it is the meat of the game. Focusing on PVE and avoiding players is a valid way to play it, but completing a match without a player attacking you is a rarity. That is part of the appeal of the extraction shooter concept. When getting out alive is your objective, conflict with other players isn't always necessary. It means you can focus on sneaking around, waiting for other players to kill each other, scavenging the leftovers of a fight, or setting traps for your enemies. It's this freeform approach to strategy that makes Hunt Showdown so much fun, and it's why I'm excited at what Bungie could do with such a format. It being a hero shooter or not doesn't really impact that base structure, so I'm open to whatever they try.
I think the reason ppl are pissed is that they were advertized your "own customizeble character not "even more hero stuff" not only does it strip away from personal expression trough customization from players, but opens doors for bad monitization, the only reason hunt showdowns heroes are not really bothersome is that they have no special perks, abilities, or direct gameplay benefits. Im personally not happy about the switch to a hero system since im very tired of the hero slop that gets forced in every game nowadays
Hero Shooter means they are going to release overpowered pay-to-win Heroes that will ease your extraction experience. Likely balance them once the new one drops to force you to keep paying out. This is a setup to pit wallets against each other.
As someone who plays a lot of hunt showdown, it still annoys me, I don’t want another hero shooter, and while yes hunt has hunters, they are not really heroes just custom models/skins for your character. Also as a halo fan, god damn that’s shame
Something like the finals seems like the best middle ground for something like this. The runners being replaceable and reconstructable can be enforced by making generic templates that we can customize but adding different backpacks/sizes to them to inform players of potential abilities/options they have would be a nice middle ground. Ideally no hero’s but this to me at least would be the best option if we’re forced to.
For everyone freaking out over the hero part, to me it sounds like it’s just for the customization, and that each “hero” won’t have any effect on gameplay
To be honest while I know this video is months old, i wanna give my two cents. I played a lot of "The Cycle" and that game had balanced having lore-relevant operators with fairly extensive, shared cosmetic customization. Your operator didn't have unique perks, and really just affected your face, skin color, and voic, while clothing options were interchangeable between characters
I was already disappointed that a franchise that didn't got a new game in such a long time, got something new announced only for it to be an extraction shooter. Now my expectations for it are pretty much dead with it now being a mix of Hero Shooter (as if we needed more of those....) and Extraction shooter. Bungie really dropped the ball hard with this being a good chance to remake Marathon in the same style as Doom 2016.
I for one am quite happy they made the dev change. Whether you like it or not Valorant is an incredibly successful shooter game. Any wisdom this dev brings will only help ameliorate the gameplay experience. As for customization that is kinda a bummer.
Long time marathon fan- please, please let me read pages full of lore again. I loved it when I was six. We all still love it, rather than, “this is the new person, they can do meta breaking stuff, coz we wanted them to”. Other than that, keep Marathon as a special thing at the perfect time (postmodernist pre-millennium concept of/space/time/ai. If I hear a special payable, “frog blast the vent core” voice then Bungie will have lost me forever. Too late to the game on “hero-shooters” contemporary rainbow six has killed that. Please PLEASE, don’t kill another icon. Definitely too late into development for me to be pleading but it’s painful and I hope you’ve not ballsed up what was a great series.
If this is a pvp based game and not a remake or continuation original story im gonna be sad because marathon has an amazing story and there is so much potential for the marathon series as a campaign
Tbf this stuff looked nowhere like Marathon in the first place, and the fact that it was meant to be an extraction shooter didn't help. I couldn't care less about it.
It was a new game with a thin coat of Marathon paint on it. Most of it was far enough removed from stuff we never really encountered in the game (the factions) with a few recognisable things like the Compiler. It was always like this, they just made it obvious now.
Hunt is in no way a "HERO" shooter or influenced by them in any way. When you pick a Skin for your Character in Hunt it's just and only that, a skin. If they lock us into characters with specific abilities based on what they look like then Nah I'm good.
Hero shooters aren't a bad thing... If it's a PvE/campaign story. Cause that Hero is the protagonist of the story who's actively involved with said story. Like John Green Man from Halo. You can even have multiple heros who can do different things. If it's PvP online. Let there be free customization, let the player decide on what abilities they want their own character to have. Give us the best of both worlds by making a fun campaign and THEN the multiplayer. Me personally, I'm tired of how multiple games have this multiplayer first mindset with added story later. Sometimes, I just wanna go it solo. Learn the story. Learn the world. Follow a character arc and have a personal experience with a game. I want something I can play without the need of the Internet or worry about lag cause my buddy Jimmy Bobby doesn't have a strong enough Internet connection.
Hunt Showdown is not a Hero Shooter. Ther is no Class system. The only thing Hunt and the future Marathon have in common is the Objective Based game Mode.
I'll wait to see what they make of. Hero shooter, extraction shooter, whatever. If it is a good game with solid gameplay and a loop worth coming back I'll check it out. If it falls flat it won't be because one element wasn't quite right. Whole package matters.
Personally I thought it weird the marathon was being made into an extraction shooter, but then again I'm not sure what direction you could go with Marathon considering the story is complete from the original games
Marathon is an existential and cosmic horror scifi story heavy series. If any changes serve making it easier to tell a compelling story with a great game loop then I'm happy. If not, then boo
honestly... if they go the route of The Cycle (the first version) id play it... i miss that game and i think would suit this one too... maybe... i just miss old Cycle
Yeah except everyone is sick of heros we want our own character, hero is another way of saying we want to charge you for skins and dont think providing you a way to make your own character is important.
its an extraction shooter, of course its pvp. the problem is the heroes. there will be no way theyre not generic. the nameless synths with custom gear were a much, much better idea.
But why would I play this over Hunt, a polished game with a solid track record at this point. And I think Bungie is missing that Destiny 2 survived a crowded genre because it was first (to the MMO, Lootershooter, Live service genre). With Marathon they are going to be the "Destiny Killer" of this hero extraction shooter genre, meaning itll be irrelevant at launch, unless Bungie does something wildly unique which is unlikely at this point.
What a spit in the face the Marathon fans. Not only is their elaborate and extremely intricate story being lobotomized by corporate greed, it's being turned into a hero extraction shooter... Yikes.
Marathon is gonna be a pvp hero shooter because the shareholders want a pvp hero shooter. It's not that hard to understand. What the consumers want doesn't matter anymore because the shareholders know that gamers are brainless cattle who will throw money at whatever trendy thing they shit out. Hope you're enjoying this reality guys, because its the future you spent your money on.
I really hope they change that. How is it that they haven’t realised that the hero shooter genre had run its course! Wait a second… it’s the children they are trying to appeal to!
"Right team, Marathon Infinity left us off with multiple Timelines, a conviluted story that engaged people to this day and introduced meta concepts that we still use in Destiny to this day. How are we gonna follow this up?" "Lets make a generic and boring sounding hero shooter that will be pvp exclusive and never mention anything from the old games again... and add season passes and cosmetics." "PRINT IT! PRINT IT NOW!!!!"
I agree. It sounds like Hunt:Showdown where there are recruitable heroes but built upon from there rather than a player made character. Works well and it allows them to constantly add.
I hope so. Some level of player choice, customization and progression is needed for an extraction shooter, and it seems like all of that will still be there.
Massive L, no longer even interested if they make it a hero shooter. Tbh I think a big part of it is that it takes less effort to make pre-made characters vs customisation, and it’s easier to monetise pre-made skins.
It's so over. I didn't really care before when I realized it was an extract shooter. It looked pretty cool and while extraction games arent my cup of tea, I really like the DZ in the Division games. If it's really a hero shooter on top of being an extract shooter, I'm out.
Could've just given us a new sequel to the old Marathon games a la Doom 2016/Doom Eternal, but I guess it's easier to milk an old property EA style and make another soulless live service game instead
80% to 90% of hunt is PVE and the fact they had to change it so you can basically always have the same load out Defeats the purpose of heros. It's going to be ass they should have just made a good single player remake of the OG Trilogy.
Dear Bungie, Please leave Marathon alone. No one cares about the IP except a bunch boomers. You’ll only be hurting them when this game fails as a hero shooter
Immediately lost some interest. They did this for the money. If you have 20 different heroes with 5 different skins for each, thats revenue. But they’ll learn the hard way when they realize that a hostile monetized experience is only for the casuals. Use that shit on some fucking 2K or FIFA players. If COD can fail, so can this.
Thats fucked up I really liked the trailer because of its contrastant colors and minimalism in the robots design model but if they end up having heros or some type of valorant/overwatch characters with a minimum of shit ass lore for common mfs to get hyped then I will loose all my interest in this game. There is so much potential like it's supposed to be a repetitive game and everyone starts with the same things so everyone having just a few inexpressive robots would make the playerbase want to grind to customize their character/robot just like how Halo used to be and even if it ends up being f2p they can go nuts with the death effects/animations either their kills or deaths + skins but keeping the monotonously of everyone being an A,B or C class of robot in a way
edit: Sorry, I'm 3 years old - reading comprehension is hard. Sorry, but it's just a bizzare comparision. Core raid gameplay aside, Hunt: Showdown has nothing to do with non-customizable Hero Systems - it's the exact opposite with you choosing your loadout, perks and even having a choice in the randomized starting gear/look of your hunters.
Was simply thinking of “Legendary Hunters”. If Marathon’s core loop is based around building a loadout, choosing perks, gear and upgrades, I doubt it will have full in Heroes like OW or Apex.
I’m not spending a single cent on this game if they make it a hero shooter. I’m sick and tired of the genre, especially since it’ll massively limit playstyle and cosmetic customization, which are core features of the extraction shooter genre.
