Today is an interesting one. We're going to listen to UK punk band Soft Play's song "Punk's Dead" which addresses the outrage people had when they changed their name from Slaves. What do you think? Is punk dead or are they keeping it alive?

The story goes that Bobbie Vylan (from Bob Vylan) made a joke to Laurie from Slaves about not being able to wear the merch due to him being black, and Laurie agreed. I saw this pair play at the Wagon & Horses in Digbeth, I think they'd just released their first EP or mini album or something like that, a mate of mine had done the artwork. The energy and power was immense. The singer was dressed in a 50s style shirt and zoot trousers which was a pretty cool juxtaposition with the musical fury!

As a forward facing progressive movement punk should be changing with the times. The only people saying punk is dead are fat old men who didn't care about politics and wanted to drink and fight. The Ramones playing rock and roll really fast was kinda cool I guess but they also wrote boring rock 'n' roll cliches lyrically and had shit politics. There's a reason they had mass appeal.

It's punk they have changed their name. People would expect usually a band to stick with a name but they've just went ahead and done it regardless of what people think. I just thought it was odd at first they changed their name from a marketing perspective but it's their band and their art what they do with it is their choice :)

I'll admit that I'd not heard of them, but they supported The Prodigy at the Utilita Arena in Birmingham recently and they were amazing! They came on to The Vengaboys which was hilarious, and then smashed it! Their energy was infectious and unwavering! The crowd were bouncing and I loved every minute that they were on the stage! I looked them up as soon as I got home, they've got a new fan right here! Changing their name is totally understandable as far as I can see, it's their choice, if people don't like it, that's their problem, not the bands?

Robbie definitely was an unlikely feature 😂 I do know however that despite the heavy sound they have a lot of pop sentimentalities and a broad taste in music.

As much as it's nice Slaves (US) changed their name in memory of their Manchester show and I liked not having to explain it wasn't Slaves (UK) who still had their name then I don't get the need to change it for reasons outside of wanting a change since they changed lead singer. After just this videos listen I also wonder whether the song "Punk's Dead" is in E minor. Anyway, I have been enjoying listening to Code Orange's "The Above" this year, so it would appear that hardcore punk is still alive and pogo dancing this year. There are also loads of pop punk bands touring the UK (Fall Out Boy, Blink-182 and others) this year.

Punk is dead i grew up durring the 3rd wave of punk, everyone wanted to be an individual we made alot of our own clothes to react to the styles we liked. It was all about being yourself and being able to talk and share ideas whether troublesome or not. So much of it was about being yourself. Now it's all band wagon jumping all the kids out there pretending to be gay and transgender for the like or views it's so disrespectful to my friends who were out being themselves while the rest of society was making fun of them or putting them down and they were still out and openly being themselves. All the hard work they did to live they're own life and supporting others. Kids and punks today have no idivuality everyone copies what ever happens to be popular everyone is afraid to state they're real feelings about anything because it might now be how the other 90% think. Thank goodness I never claimed for be a punk just a rock and roller. The punk scene aside from some old school bands is just lame as all hell.

@@jonnyhafer936 Punk is all about being yourself so people should.... not talk about being gay or trans? I live in one of the most progressive cities in the world and my gay and trans friends are still regularly threatened and attacked for being who they are in public. It's not a fun little bandwagon, it's spitting in the face of the establishment, a new frontier. You claim there's no individuality and yet you want everyone to just go back to the way they were 30 years ago. Talk about being a conformist.

I would go to C.B.G B. In the early days with Cyndi Lauper. Talking Heads were bad in the beginning. The good band was Television! Also our favorite was The Shirts, Annie Golden was the singer. You know of her? Also, my friends band was the first punk band on MTV Kraut. Have you heard them?

I have a question for Justin I'd love to hear him answer. Were you ever approached to do a solo album? How do you feel about singers doing solo projects? Are solo projects mainly just a cash grab that doesn't have to pay a full band?

Currently enjoying the 20th Ann. Permission to Land set. I have to ask though, leaving the BBC Peel/Maida Vale sessions off of this set seems like an oversight. Also think the 2003 version of ‘Street Spirit’ should’ve been included. Was there a reason for these being omitted? Cheers

Anthrax stood on stage wearing coveralls that read: WE'RE NOT CHANGING OUR NAME during the Cheney era 'anthrax attacks' in the face of calls to change their name. This band is gutless. Their name wasn't "We Love Slavery" ffs!

They are an incredible band, the gigs are epic. The Slaves was originally meant as we are all slaves to the wage, the 9 til 5 etc. not the historical slave trade, they realised it was misconstrued and causing offence so changed it. Personally I'm not sure about the new name, but couldn't really give a monkeys!

This song is aimed at me because they really leaned into "the message" after the first album and they missed the mark with the songs. So it was a double wammy. They got preachy at the same time thier music started to suck. But this is a great comeback.
