Hi friends, about a month ago I picked up the mimik (faux squirrel) travel brush set on sale. I love the full-size mimik brushes so I decided to give these a try since the set has a size 8 round which is a size I use a lot in the full-length brush. Let's see if this set is worth the money!
amzn.to/46yCP6q
Pros:
Price
Well made
Size printed on metal caps
Good paint-carrying capacity
Brushes come to a razor-sharp point.
The 1/4" flat brush and #is4 and #2 rounds are true to size
Cons:
The #8 and #6 rounds are smaller than their standard-handled counterparts.
Bottom line: At first I was disappointed in the size of the larger rounds as I expected them to be larger and more like the standard mimik brushes I have but after working with these brushes for the last couple of weeks I am really glad I bought them. They are more affordable so I won't worry about losing them when I am out painting but they still perform well. I would rebuy these and recommend them if the size meets your needs.

Hullo Lindsay, thank you for sharing your opinions on these Mimik brushes! I believe that all “travel” sets run small no matter what brand! You demonstrated not only the quality of the brushes, but the size of them is not truly a factor when working outside or in a smaller sketchbook or block! I am a regular customer at Jerry’s Artarama, I seldom purchase anything from them at regular price. Now most retailers have a list price and their regular prices are less, Jerry’s has a sale price and super sale prices! I have not purchased the regular reduced price item in maybe 10 years! I have waited until the supplies that I want go on super sale! If you go to the site it is the green price not the red. Always the furthest right on the website! If it (the price) is not the green discount I simply wait until it is! I honestly don’t think I have needed a supply in several years. I have purchased a tube of paint for a customer who wanted a specific color of dress in a portrait and she was convinced that it was an “unmixable” color! I have mixed a lot of colors over the years, but the customer is right if they are willing to pay to be right! Lovely video and beautiful presentation, thank you.

Thanks Lindsay. Mimik squirrel were the first good brushes I ever bought after watching you use them in your videos and lives. I'm still using the first set I bought even though I beat the heck out of my #8 round to splayed out the bristles for grasses and different effects. I got back up sets bit haven't had to use them yet. When you want to carry a lot of paint these are great. I find I use these and your craftammo set almost exclusively. I did learn to use a cheap synthetic to get paint out of my Pans onto the pallet to not beat up my good brushes.😂 💜

Me too! As a newbie I was only purchasing brushes with pretty barrels, but was very disappointed in their ability to hold a point. My Mimik brushes are the best brushes I own & no cute little animals had to die🐿

I have other Mimik brushes and have never had any problems so I believe it was just a rare occurrence. I can’t say enough about the customer service at JERRYS ARTARAMA!!! It definitely makes me feel good shopping with them.

I agree, I have these brushes, they hold a point wonderfully, but I was als disappointed in the sizes and thought they ran small. I also have an issue where my caps don't fit so snug over the ends when I have them open after having used them a few times. more of an inconvenience than a deterrent from using them. I'd be curious if yours do the same after some use with putting the caps on and off. I also got mine because I loved the full size Mimik brushes. Great video, if others don't mind the smaller sizes, this is a nice brush set. Wouldn't it be great to be able to get a 12 round that matched the size of their 12 in the regular handle? You'd be able to do an entire painting with that one brush. I love the way mimik brushes hold their points.

I just got a similar set of travel brushes from Temu for like 5 bucks. Great set and very nicely made too. I was shocked. I only bought them because I needed another 5 bucks in my shopping cart and that's when I found out TEMU sells art supplies. Not always the best art supplies, but good if you want to practice a technique. I've always wanted the travel set and now I have one.

Great review! The sizes seem appropriate for travel painting, when you paint on a sketchbook. The #8 of a normal brush might be bigger if it is meant for studio use, when you are more likely to paint on bigger surfaces. Anyway...the sizing system for brushes is so unpredictable. It would be more helpful if the makers described width of the brush/length of the bristles instead (8 mm wide and 20mm long bristles, for example would be 8/20 ) I wish someone sold these in Europe. Amazon does not seem to carry them, and Jerry's charges $85 just for shipping 😮😮.

They've got some good sized ones 9, 10, 13, even a 19 (great for washes) that may be smaller than the same size in non-travel, but, if you really want a brush that's bigger than the size 8 travel brush....these could be the brushes! Solidly done and fair review, Lindsay! I personally have never been happy with a travel brush--no matter how careful I felt I was being, I'd slightly smash a point putting them away, plus the handles for some reason felt more unwieldy in my hand. I can see these being lovely for the right painter's needs though, and I wonder if they run smaller not only to fit in the hollow casing but because it's not expected you're going to be painting any bigger than 9x12"-ish with them. *shrug*

Hi Lindsay, Two questions, and a plea for you to address the issues of making art when we have become disabled (or whatever the correct term is). Maybe I should ask the one in Critique Club... I am kind of confused about your evaluation or information regarding the use of the liner. On Steve Mitchell's video about liners, he said that the long bristles would act like a "shock absorber" for those of us that are shaky. Does that jive with your evaluation of them? Secondly, how easy is it to damage brushes if we can't control them properly? I have bought a few Mimiks, some liners & some other "nicer" brushes too, but I'm afraid to use them. I have spasms & very poor control of my right hand, due to the nerve damage. It is actually spreading to the left now as well, so I am afraid to use many of my better materials. I have become pretty heavy handed, not just shaky. Any advice will be truly appreciated. .
@thefrugalcrafter
@thefrugalcrafter Год назад
Well, it would be harder to damage a liner but they are more difficult to control. Larger brushes would hold up better. Let me think on this topic. I am not really qualified to speak for people who have disabilities but I could talk about some helping tools for stealing hands as I used to work teaching art to the elderly.

@providencevalleyfarm5270 - Excellent post! I wholeheartedly agree, it's difficult to find advice about ways to adapt artist tools & techniques to accommodate physical limitations. Many of us have zero tolerance for adding creative pursuits to our "Damn, I can't do that anymore." list. Wish there were an Accommodating Artists youtube channel.🤞 @thefrugalcrafter - Thank you for giving this post some thought! You wouldn’t need to be qualified to speak on the topic for the disabled. Just introducing the helpful tools that you’ve worked with while teaching the elderly may be enough for viewers to discuss in comments & exchange knowledge about approaches that have or haven’t worked with their specific physical challenges.

@providencevalleyfarm5270
@providencevalleyfarm5270 Год назад
@petalpusher8313 - Lindsay & PetalPusher. I thought I would mention. It has taken about 5 years of hard work to get to where I can hold & control my pens & pencils well enough to actually work for any length of time on any kind of art. You don't need any qualifications, other than experience. I have had multiple Occupational & Physical therapists, but none of them were able to teach me how to paint, draw or do any of my fiber art any more. Art Therapists could have done that, but insurance no longer covers that & I don't think Medicare does either, so the rehab hospitals I have been to removed those departments. Trial & error & a will to regain what I lost was all I had to go on. As a homeschooler I had some big pencils left from the kids & the best tiny little tools that are dirt cheap! PENCIL GRIPS! Those little things are One of the biggest helps I have found. As I relearned how to hold pencils I couldn;t close my hand on them, but the grips made for a non-slip & soft surface to work with. I also found the kind that have little "pockets" on them were really great for starting out. I could slip a thumb or finger in them & work without closing my fingers at all! I will mail some examples to you Lindsay to show if you would like.
