Is the @Decked Gen 2 Drawer system worth the hype over Gen 1? In this video I go over the differences and tell you my opinion. DECKED decked.com/ FOLLOW RJMFISHTALES ON INSTAGRAM, FACEBOOK & TIKTOK
My only issue with mine is, WHY THE HELL DIDNT I GET THIS SOONER. It saves space in the bed of the truck but at the same time it does take the depth of the bed down to around 12 inches or so from the bed rails. the good side to that is your tools are safe from rain and honest people, unless you add a solid bed cover that has locking access only inside the bed, any cover that has an exposed lock on the outside of the cover can be gotten into. all in all, this is a great thing to add to your truck.
Ordered mine last week ! Can’t freakin’ wait !!! Im an HVAC guy & my back seat is always full of tools. I have a enclosed trailer, but get tired of dragging it around on smaller jobs. Im stoked !
Great video! I've been on the fence about getting this system, but your experience and perspective really helped. I have the same rack as you, so it helped to see that as well. I think my F150 has a little deeper bed too, leaving about 10" on top of the Decked system, so with the rack it should still be usable space. Thanks for making this. I look forward to checking out more of your videos.
Absolutely a great system! Thanks for sharing and going over this Ryan. I really think it's system that works well and folks will appreciate if they are in the market looking. Keep up the good work my friend!
Had the two draw system in my jeep gladiator. Great system if you need to store a lot of tools for the job site. Yes they take up room! Yes they are for those who need real storage of tools rather than a delivery truck. But the real reason I liked mine. I was involved in a rear end collision. Another vehicle hit me from behind doing between 50 and 70 mph. He had to be removed from his vehicle with the jaws of life. My truck, although totaled, was intact due to the decked tool system. Every cop, fireman, and EMS person wanted to know what kept my truck intact. I’ll be placing this in my new vehicle asap.
I can only speak on the above bed tool box. I so glad I made the purchase yes it $900 and $100 for ladder but with my 2020 Silverado 2500HD seating high I love it.
That is priced right. A weatherguard tool box is 1200-1300. They are not made as good as they use to be. You throw a piece of wood against it or whatever and it’s all dented. The crossover box from Decked is so much better because you can beat the crap out of it and it looks the same.
@@rjmfishtales I’ve currently got a gen 1 in my truck and I’ve been thinking about getting the gen 2 and your video definitely answered some questions I had about it. Thanks again!
@jonasj333 I am glad I could help. See if you can sell it and get the gen 2 if you think you would like it better. The lockable stash bush definitely give a lot more storage.
@@rjmfishtales Yes I also liked how you can easily put something thin down the length of the bed now that the ammo can form isn’t in the way. I use my decked system for tools and it would be nice the be able to keep some strait edges and levels down the side or even be able to go to the back and grab something if it’s slid to the back. That’s one of my current battles where I’ve had things slid past and has now been lost to the front of the bed and it’s horrible to get back there to get anything out. I also like how the new ammo cans don’t let a liquid in, that was always a battle I was fighting. Just out of curiosity, do you know if any of the old tool boxes would fit in the new drawers? There always a box of tools that I don’t touch too often but would still like to keep on the truck, if the old box would fit I’d just put it at the back of one of the drawers.
We run them decks in our f350s, concrete construction so we put them to work!!! They are amazing and very durable, we live in Michigan and even in the winter with snow and ice they still perform well,, if your on the fence because they expensive just trust me and buy one, they worth it
Absolutely! They work so well for electrical work that I do. When I was in the field I had all my cordless tools, batteries, drill bit & tips, lots of extra hand tools all organized! Made it so easy to inventory and make sure all your tools were back in the truck! Yes it was awesome in my HD truck with the little longer drawers. But the short drawers now work just fine for kayak fishing!
@billd3765 you will always have a small level of moisture. Anything you really need to protect I suggest putting in a IP65/67 box. I use Milwaukee Packouts for anything I want to keep dry 100 percent which is very little. When you buy it they give you 2 watertight boxes. But I leave cordless tools in there with no long term issues.
Everyone has different preferences for their truck storage, I had a decked and hated it while a co-worker who does the same job loves his. My biggest concern was things sliding top of it and busting out my back window.
@@rjmfishtales I tried that but didn’t feel comfortable leaving things on it that weren’t strapped down. Also couldn’t even fit a weed trimmer between the decked and my tonneau cover when it was raining and that was the deal breaker for me. Thanks for your video!
I own a Gen 2 installed in a 2023 Ram Bighorn 2500. Im not in love with it because it is not as practical for me as as much as I thought it would be. The loss of bed depth is needed more than unique storage.
I totally understand that. But as a fisherman the unique storage means more than bed space at the current time. But like I said I completely understand your point.
The distance to the top of rail from box will depend on your vehicle. But most beds are 20-21 inches deep. Drawers are 12 inches tall. So remaining is 8-9 inches. Sometimes 10. No accessories for hauling 8 foot lumber. My bed is 5’8 long. I just leave tailgate up and stack it on angle. The other day I picked up 8 sheets of 3/4 ply and 24 2x4s no problem. The decked drawers have tie downs built in and I have plenty in the truck. Just strap down all your stuff and good to go. The decked drawers will not restrict you. Just everything is taller out of bed so strap down and go! I rather the drawers than not at all.
Yeah I used to say that but wood isnt as tough or last as long when water hits it. Just bought a new truck and they came with. Not sure I like them but they are nice.
You have about 9-10 inches left above the drawers. Depending on bed depth. The drawers are 12 inches tall. So measure your bed depth and subtract 12. Most beds are 20-22 inches deep.
That would be cool. Only problem is holding it down and in place in the bed of truck itself. I know Weatherguard and American Van make steel and diamond plate aluminum ones but not as high so limited storage for bigger stuff. Good for tools though.
@rjmfishtales i have lower bed hooks in my truck bed, if they come out with a single drawer it could attach to the lower bed hook to hold it in place. The lower hook will be blocked anyway with the drawe. I still have an upper hook to use to tie anything down with.
@TopWaterAssassin78 the gen 2 have tie downs built in for that reason when the others get blocked. Maybe one day they may release one sided drawers. I am sure they have thought about it. Or tried.
If you add a rack of some sort there not a whole lot you can't haul on top of it. I'd stay away from gravel or any loos bulky stuff. But stuff like furniture, appliances, 4-wheeler, ect. Aren't a problem.
I’m also a Kayak Fisherman and have been on the fence getting one because I worry about sliding my Bigwater into the rear window. Do you have a video or pictures of your Kayak in your truck you could share?
No I do not sir. I would just strap it back a bit so there is no forward or backwards movement. That is what I do. I use the tie down on the decked system itself. I have had no issues. Also unfortunately after I made this video I had to change truck because of mechanical issues and now have a long bed. So couldn’t transfer decked system and also can’t afford another one right now. I am back to using trailer, bed of truck or roof rack. But the decked drawers work awesome and truck keep kayak strapped so there is no real movement
Would you say converting a rack to a cap is a cheaper option than buying a cap itself? It was suggested by my father in law to add a decked system and a cap to my truck to protect my film equipment considering the amount of things I typically carry on top of regular tools and the like.
Or you can do a really good tonneau cover and decked system. Or just a good cap and no decked drawers. You can always do a drawer slide if you don’t want to climb into truck. It all depends what you carry and how tall etc. There is many options you can go.
I wish Decked would come out with a system that is the depth of the entire truck bed. I’d love to have the option to either have much deeper drawers, or four drawers double stacked. Often times that space on top of the Decked system ends up going to waste.
@@rjmfishtales - I’m not saying I want the drawers longer, I want them taller. I want the option to have drawers that are as tall as the tailgate. Or to have two rows of drawers that are as tall as the tailgate. In other words, I want the top of the decked system to be flush with the side walls of the bed.
@Toglander oh ok. Yea that would be cool. Definitely would want a 3/4 ton truck or bigger for that. You would be weighing down truck with lots of stuff. Good idea. I use to double stack the rat packs think they are called. The metal version of these basically. From weatherguard or one of those brands.
It’s definitely a big difference. All my Milwaukee packouts now fit flat and so much more. It’s worth trying to sell your old one and get this one. Or sell a kidney. Lol.
Hey I have a 97 chevy but the decked system goes to 99 so this is my question. When you close the tailgate, do you have some room in-between the drawer system and the tailgate closed ?
I did a short with the organizers in it. They fit just fine. This is on another channel I have that I started. More for construction ru-vid.comhc3Rt9-ZcPk?si=CylB9H0UkUBIZml_
It looks like it stops a few inches short of the full length of the bed. Like it looks like there is a 8" gap between the back of the drawers and the tailgate. Why?
Every truck bed is different. A short bed drawer is going to be the same size across all trucks and same thing for a long bed drawer. They are not going to make different drawers for different trucks. They just change the top piece to fit different truck beds. So being the Chevy has the longest bed across all sizes and makes of trucks they have the biggest gap at the back. My ford had a 4 inch gap and this truck has more because it’s like 5’9 inches long. The back is where it is short that’s it. Everywhere else is cut to size.
You will be fine. Water will not get in at all. I have had snow on mine when I lived up north for weeks at a time and never had problems even on the Gen 1 system.
I made my own with PT lumber and coated with truck bed liner. Whole thing cost less than $200 (less than $100 since I had most of the materials already)
You will definitely love it over Gen 1. The drawers being squared off and being able to fit my Milwaukee packouts makes it awesome. Also a lot more room. The stash bins being dry now. Love it!! I have locks on everything which makes it even more awesomely!!! You won’t regret.
@@rjmfishtales The G1 ammo cans also not that useful (and not waterproof), now entirely useful and waterproof. Opening inner toolboxes while still in the drawer is money. How do you access the corner turnbuckles to keep the assembly tight in the bed?
@tommyrq180 through the stash bins just like you did with the ammo cans. The inserts are removable. The initial kit comes with 4 and I added 4 more on the order. You need to order 2 shallow and 2 deep to have all 4 corners to have waterproof storage or you just leave as an open hole. Up to you. It’s 50 dollars more to have 4 more so definitely worth it as they are sold in pairs at 25 each.
This may be something worth reaching out to them for??!! They may be able to laser measure your bed and cut the plastic top pieces for you. You can always modify easily how you attach it to your bed. I will tag this comment on my IG page and also tag @decked. Like is said call them and see what they can do.
Moisture is the question. You addressed it but still looks to me like rain will get in. Do you need to drill drain holes, or will rain REALLY not get in?
I really wish i could get one of the decked systems for my truck, i just cant afford the price of them, its an amazing product but at a steep price. But as they say, cheap aint good and good aint cheap.
I'm looking to upgrade my current decked to the new style, selling my old system for half price, along with all the extra boxes I bought if you're interested , fits 2015+ chevy crew cab
Hello buddy how's your doing? Man i like that Gen 2 Decked Drawers man. It looks so nice in your truck too. If you can i like to see how everything looks like with the kayak on the back man. I have an F 350 & just seeing this is got me thinking about getting one now. That is an very nice Decked Drawers man. P.S. Ryan buddy can I get your opinion on something? My wife just found some sandals yesterday in a store that the toes area is close up but the back of the heels is open so it's a slips on sandals. Do you think that I should buy it to keep my toes warm for the winter time since my chubby fat wide toes are hurting me when my toes get cold because of my bad nerves that are in my toes or should I just keep my money & fine someone who can make Custom shoes for me? My wife said that they have my size 15 in the store & she thinks that their are wide enough for my feet 🦶. I just don't know what to do but i do need something to keep my toes warm while me wearing my flip flops 🩴. Right now I put the heat on my toes when I am outside in cold weather while being loaded up my Trailer. I appreciate your opinion buddy. I hope everything is going well with the work you are doing in your bathroom & you & your family are having a good weekend buddy.
I love the Decked drawers and always have. If you have a long bed (8 foot) you can do the drawers and crossover box. But they are well worth it. As far as the shoes if you can get an enclosed front I would instead of open toe. Me personally, I would get custom shoes made and be done. Get sneakers, slip on and dress shoes etc so you have. I would also get custom boots
@rjmfishtales yeah I am going to look into the Decked Drawers. & The sandals are closed toes in the front of the sandal. It the back part were your heels is that is open & it's a slips on sandals. My toes won't be open at all. It's like A half of a front shoe. My wife thinks that it would keep my toes warm in the cold because my toes are not open to the weather. I am looking into getting some Custom shoes made. I just trying to find someone who can make them. My wife wants me to keep wearing my flip flops 🩴 because she loves seeing my chubby fat wide toes barefooted 👣 & in flip flops 🩴 but she understands the pain that I am in when it's cold outside. Thank you so much for your opinion man.
You would have to be hit extremely hard. With the set back your frame would have to buckle over 2 feet and I think the Decked system would break first.
@@rjmfishtales no need i have a 1500 i want a 3500 for my next truck in a year or two and would get it then or Gen3 lol they need to mage the cargo glide wider for on top i did not buy it since so small
@usnrecon82 ok. The slide is probably based on the structure connection points and I am sure if they make bigger it may be an issue. I just use the stuff. That’s all I know. I am sure Gen 3 will be a ways from now. Probably a ten year mark before they make changes again.
There is drawer units out there half the height from American Van that is made from diamond plate. Just drawers and only 50 inches deep. I use to have those too. Worked pretty good and held quite a bit.
Losing all of the wheel well area space was the real dealbreaker for me with the previous model, so I sold it. It's great that they're making improvements for anyone who's interested in buying for the first time or upgrading, but DECKED isn't ever getting another dollar from me.
They have their pros and cons. Everyone’s needs and preferences are different. If I need my full bed I can always remove in 10-15 minutes. Sorry to hear you didn’t like them
Gen 1 didn't notice videos said gen 2. With a few sheets of OSB stacked on top I have put 2300 lb pallets on it many times. With that being said I can't reach the back of my drawers it's deeper than my arm can reach that is a waste of space. I beat the hell out of mine every day I store heavy masonry tools in it. Nothing has broken on drawers yet. Can't store much else on top without feeling like it will fly off on the freeway. Overall I'm still on the fence sometimes I regret it and others it's nice to have my tools out of the weather and thieves can't see my tools especially if I have some OSB and random junk on top you don't know it's there.
It all depends what you do with the bed of your truck. Do you always have items in it? Or do you carry big items all the time? You get use to it. All you need to do is learn that all you need to do is have tie downs with you. I think it’s completely worth it. Sometimes if you have a cover over bed then sometimes it can be a pain. In my opinion if you have @decked drawers i would use a cover as well because a lot times you would need to flip out of the way. If you carry a lot of small items and tools etc I think drawers are completely worth it for security. Or you get a hard cover that is hard to break into. Your call.
Like you said not for everyone. There is not one vehicle accessory that is. I use for fishing and electrical work. It is exactly what I need. I also have trailers so bed space is not my concern. I need items out of the elements without installing a bed cap or cover that doesn’t work for me.
@@rjmfishtales I would still equip the locks to my drawer system even though the tailgate locks, as an additional layer of security. Having locks as an option just feels like a money-grab from DECKED.
It’s rain & snow tight. Nothing gets wet or soaked with water. If you have a high moisture level in the air you may get some moisture inside. Like Decked says it’s not Tupperware tight. I keep cordless tools etc in drawers and no issues. You may get a little rust over time on your tools but that is normal for all tools. If you delicate equipment use the boxes that come with Decked when you purchase drawers or us Milwaukee packouts that have an IP67/65 rating and good to go. No tool box or tonneau cover on the market is 100 percent waterproof. If you want waterproof keep inside your truck if it’s that delicate. Besides that the gen 2 drawers are a big improvement and even the storage bins on top have a lip and things stay dry and you can lock them.
@heavyhitta52 oh you will be 100 percent fine with that for sure. I use to keep mine in the drawers back in the day of the 1st gen before they made it more water and dust tight. I use to keep bunker gear in a bag and my mask in another one and was fine. Definitely good for that stuff for sure and use the other drawer for rescue gear and tools.
I can't justify spending all that money on a piece of molded plastic. I don't see how this plastic is worth all that money... If it was made out of metal I could see it, but not made from recycle soda bottles.
@@Deltron6060 No I didn't spend more. 1/3 the cost, do the math. Time is money, not really. My time was free-time. And my design was better, more efficient for my future jobs with cost effectiveness in full access for my tools, that there system doesn't provide. So Realistically; Check Mate & Match.
@@Decked I will get you photo's when I get a chance. What I use for sliding it, paste WAX & Plastic cutting boards. There is a 4'X8' sheet of plywood on the top of the drawers, that slides in & out. If I had to, it all can come out. Two drawer system I design without a blue print LOL... I have a full size truck bed. All trucks they are building today, are over sized flower pots with short beds LOL.. Every-time I'm at Home Depot or such, drop my tailgate to load, they see it and go WOW! No space is wasted, specially in the middle. No wheels required. And my drawers are completely square for depth. 6-1/2ft long. Battery system is going to fill the rest of it over time. I can pull my drawers right out to the ends; Slide it out further on to the work horses. There is much more.
Had a terrible buying experience from decked. Box came upright/ missing parts/ open…and 4 days late past the tracking date. No response other than one generic reply per my 15 emails. F decked
Wow that’s crazy. When I bought my first one I had one piece missing. I called them and they answered right away. Told them the issue and got the new piece and more 2 days later. Did you try calling? When it comes to stuff like that I don’t email. Sorry to hear about it. The shipping company was the issue on that.
Yes they take up room in the bed. But for me to haul kayak with tailgate down its the only way to have lockable storage for my gear. If I didn’t have a rack as well I could have done side tool boxes. It is set up for my needs.

You could I would just put down a tarp. It can handle 2000 pounds. Plus that is why they make trailers. 🤔😄. But seriously though you can dirt and mulch. Just place tarp inside bed. Maybe only get a yard at a time since you did lose depth.
