We discuss the Vivtech UV LED bulbs, the spectrum they produce and if they are safe for your reptile.
Ryan and Erica McVeigh are the founders of the newly launched reptile brand, VivTech. In this episode, Ryan discusses why they decided to start VivTech as well as some of the issues with large corporate reptile brands. Ryan also talks about the importance of supporting both USARK and conservation initiatives and explains how he has folded that into the brand's mission. Of course, we talk about the current VivTech products available including the UV LED bulbs, and the future tech Ryan plans on bringing to herpetoculture within the next few years.

It would be cool if the entire exotic animal community came together instead of separating ourselves into different communities instead of having a bird and fish and herp community separated we could use eachother to help get our voices out only all of us can stand up against peta and these radical people that think we shouldn’t be keeping animals we would have so much more power if it wasn’t only the herp community asking others to support USARK if only it was everyone in the exotic animal community USASK would be way more successful and have a lot more support because if we’re not careful our grandkids maybe won’t be able to keep amazing animals one day and that would be tragic

Very, very interesting episode. Ryan is a wealth of information: USARK, large reptile companies and most importantly what they are doing at Vivtech. The UVB LED has been controversial but he seems to have a good product, which needs a little bit more tweaking (which they are working on). Time will tell...hopefully good things are coming! Looking forward to being able to get these products here.

I didn't realize how much I took aquarium tech for granted until I came into the reptile hobby and so much just wasn't (and still isn't) there. Ventilation and air circulation is a huge gripe for me. So many stock enclosures have too little ventilation or no good way to circulate the air. I've just started modding computer fans onto most of mine. I also agree with a lack of enclosure variety. Aquariums you have so many choices: bowfronts, diamonds, hexes etc. Vivariums are starting to get there but it's still mostly just boxes. I heartily agree with the discussion on regulation. The hobby has taken the anti-regulation to such an extreme that we're cutting off our nose to spite our face. The reality is we will be regulated whether we want it or not and it would be much better to be proactive rather than reactive. Reptile hobbyists also need to be better about policing our own. We already keep animals that most people hate and if we don't get it together we will be brought to heel.
@AnimalsatHomePodcast
@AnimalsatHomePodcast 2 года назад
Yes ventilation is a huge one! And adding fans/extra ventilation really isn’t overly complicated, so hopefully we start seeing them incorporated into more set ups.
@nature4you734
@nature4you734 2 года назад
@@AnimalsatHomePodcast using room fans is so important inside herp rooms for the ventilation ports to function effectively. By running air past an enclosure you create a lower pressure within the enclosure, as the pressure equalises it removes stagnant air out of the enclosure, forcing air exchange.

We only have a single ball python right now, but I did notice a big difference in airflow in his enclosure (a 20 gallon long currently) once we started leaving the room fan on in his room. We are working on a bioactive 5x2x2 enclosure for him right now, but will definitely be continuing to leave the fan on even after he transitions into it because it just seems to help a lot.

The problem with policing our own is that it doesn't work. We don't allow drivers to police themselves. We have the police because we need an organization that can actually enforce the rules.

As someone who has kept aquariums for years and starting to get into reptiles the only people I know using aquarium controllers are reefers who have massive systems that run like an ecosystem and are over $10k for the system and then quite possibly another $10k in livestock. Even on my discus tank I don't run a controller but I have a herpastat2 controlling my heat mat and basking light on my KSB. Some of the features of aquarium lighting like thunderstorms and moon lights are there for people trying to cause spawning events. The lightning flashes makes the fish freak out freak out. With that said I could see how a moon light could be useful for nocturnal reptiles as night in the wild isn't absolutely dark. Night hiking in the desert on a full moon a flashlight isn't necessary in my experience.

The one part I disagree with is the idea of adding stickers and confetti and such to shipped animals or goods. I agree that we want the bag to be safer and more sanitary for the animal, but I would much rather focus on reducing unnecessary waste than getting a business card or sticker out of it

I know I'm late to this channel, but I am happy that I found it. This video was super informative and I was happy to hear someone finally mention how much money is involved with reptile products. I have lost count of how many times I hear people say "Why do they still sell heat rocks?" Because people buy them. And like it was mentioned near the end, you can't expect people to be an instant expert or know better when they first start. Also, definitely joining US ARK after seeing this. Fantastic episode. Around the 11 minute mark Ryan talks about why products are not keeping pace with the aquarium hobby. One reason is legislation. Here in the UK (and EU) products need to be CE marked. In order for someone or a company to CE mark their products it has to be tested under recognised standards by approved labs. This is often so costly that small companies or individuals can't afford those tests, or the outlay will be far more than the profit forecast would make. For example, 10 years ago I developed a controller that was basically four independent PID pulse proportional thermostats, each with programmable night time drops, and individual hi and low alarms. I've continued development and now have 8 channels so can control 8 vivariums form one unit. I had a lot of interest so looked at making it as a small commercial project - but that's when I ran into the CE marking issue, and it would have cost me £30,000 in order to be able to stand up in a court of law and state that my product is safe and meets current electrical standards. The product would not have enough interest to recoup that amount, let alone make me some money.

Thanks for listening, Malcolm! And yes, great point! Sam Perrett (HerpHQ) was just explaining this to me last week. He is in a very similar situation to you, tons of interest in his controller but the barrier of entry to turn it into a products is far to steep!

I'm so glad someone is working on this stuff! When I think about syncing with daily weather changes some of the things I wonder about would be additional drainage with storms and rainfall, microclimates (like you mentioned with leopard geckos) Google might not have the data for inside a cave or a burrow, and also that living in the opposite hemisphere it might be harder to maintain opposite seasons. I wonder if maybe being able to customize averages and variations within seasons could be an option? Like could I set it to my ball pythons wet season for 5 months? Or my boa's "winter"? Again super glad someone is marketing better items!

I want the reptile community to become more public. It is good the ads are including them. Too many people I have met only see the bad in the hobby. It really can limit on where you can even live. It is getting bad. The Florida fiasco and the many bad breeders of all kinds. They leave bad marks on the hobby. Even for the fish community. People letting their phobias rule how they treat reptile owners. My mom has a phobia of snakes but she kept opened minded and let me do my thing. She can now identify a snake, to see if it is dangerous and pick it up of it is safe to move it out of her house. I am proud as to how far she goes for me and herself. Not everyone is like this and they may never get to this level but I feel companies need to understand that there is this issue as well. I felt so alone in working with reptiles because the community is so quiet.

Great points, very interesting take! Regarding proposed permits, shouldn't individuals be required to prove that they are able to care for large or dangerous species aside from crocodilians? Large monitors, giant snakes, venomous snakes, etc. can be dangerous if they are cared for by the wrong individual. Though I suspect that the total number of injuries or deaths caused by these species is very low, I think that we might have to make a compromise here. I worry that when we ignore some of the obviously dangerous animals, the opposing organization may not take our points seriously.

We also need to think a little more on American alligators such that they are still attainable in some way for legitimate educational or research purposes. @themotions5967

@@ericroscoe8654 maybe a hybrid solution of limiting in person sales while also having permits for reptile rescues, breeders of the species, and Educators that allows them to more freely pick up these animals from any rescue or surrender situation as well as purchasing them more regularly when and if needed. That way the guy who’s never even had a dog down the street isn’t going to just be able to dish out 100$ and get one whenever he wants, but the animal educator with crocodilian husbandry related experience can freely go pick up a surrendered animal, rescue or even simply go to a breeder and purchase a animal.

Dartfrog keepers are already there. Its the rest of you that are lagging. And it is entirely because the cost of aesthetically pleasing, bioactive, sufficiently large enclousres for most reptiles is beyond what most people can/want to afford.
@AnimalsatHomePodcast
@AnimalsatHomePodcast 2 года назад
Yeah, I bring up the dart frog community all the time. And I think you’re right, the size issue/expense makes it very difficult for reptile keepers to maintain high care standards. Definitely doesn’t mean it’s impossible!
@themotions5967
@themotions5967 2 года назад
I also think there are a few more reasons aside from cost. In fact I’d also argue that a lot of people that keep smaller tropical and sub tropical species of reptile are right on the dart frog keeper’s rear as resources for properly sized bioactive setups for many of these animals are become more and more readily available I also think you guys advanced so quickly because of the sensitive nature of many dart frogs in a way you guys had the perfect reason to drive husbandry advancements forward quickly. Where a leopard gecko (for example) with even now outdated standard care conditions is still going to live 15-20 years past the wild average. Speaking of which I also think since many of the more standard reptiles we keep are arid and semi arid species, and setting up successful Complex bioactive setups for arid living and desert species can be very difficult for a novice at vivaria that we also run into issues there as well. It took me good time and research to finally develop my own species specific mixes for the arid living animals I keep that actually behave like different soil types from arid environments. For example my leopard gecko mix actually behaves like rocky clay soil. You can pick it up in your hand as a solid piece and when you compress it it falls apart back into loose soil. No standard desert substrate is going to give you those properties Even among available supplies For bioactive vivaria most of what is available is for tropical to sub tropical animals, with arid specific substrate mix recipes, and arid species specialty products being newer in concept. And issues like thy are simply because we have been keeping dart frogs in these types of setups as a standard for longer than most reptiles , and even many amphibians in private care.

I have a more cynical view on this topic. The reason why the hobby doesn't try to innovate is because many people don't want to spend the money and many people don't care. How often do you hear about people limiting their budget on caring for a common or lesser reptile? How many people have done large bioactive enclosures for the often disregarded green anole? Probably next to none because it's "only a green anole and it's so common and boring". When someone says they have 20 dogs, people are concerned about the health of the dogs. When someone says they have 20 cats, people are concerned about the health of the cats and the person. When someone says they have 20 reptiles, people like and subscribe. Watch ball python breeders on youtube talk about how excited they are to hit X,Y,Z combo and how cool it looks and then lock the snake in a rack with no room to move or do anything. They only look at the poor things for a couple minutes a week at most. I've seen people on youtube and in real life keeping burms, retics, and green anacondas in racks or bare cages they can't stretch out in. That even includes the more "respected" people, not just brian barczyk keeping monitors in racks. They aren't treating these reptiles as living creatures, they are treating them like fashion accessories at best. If the reptile hobby tried advancing their care the way the aquarium hobby supposedly does (I don't know anything about it to make a proper statement) people would realize that it's very expensive and they wouldn't be able to keep dozens of reptiles and that would hurt them on social media. They would also realize that things like burms probably shouldn't be kept as pets at all. These people aren't going to cut in to their social media profits for the sake of caring for their fashion accessories and just say "well I'm meeting the minimum care requirements". I love the animals but I hate the hobby. There are a few people out there fighting the good fight but people like you are the tiniest voices online because the algorithms place "LOOK AT MY 75+ REPTILES soyfacethumbnail.png" over "here is a study that shows that snakes with more room to move around are healthier than those that don't." I feel like social media has ruined things or maybe it was always this bad and now I can see everything that I couldn't as a kid. I'm not saying I want the hobby to go away but it desperately needs to change. Sorry for the rant.

Thank you for listening to the episode, and also for laying out your thoughts in this post! It’s certainly a tough battle. And I definitely agree with the “expense predicament” you’ve outlined here, it would be almost impossible to convince people to spend more money if they already have giant collections.
@-Liska
@-Liska 2 года назад
Coming from the aquarist side of things I'd say there is an element of a grown culture to it. Even within that hobby you'll find big contrasts depending on where it's practised. When I look up care conditions for certain fish species, the German and English sources will sometimes vary wildly, especially when it comes to acceptable tank sizes. The forums and communities also seem to have more pushback when it comes to meagre keeping conditions and "fish soup" (overloaded tanks / mixing of too many species to meet their individual needs). Some stronger regulations about animal care probably also play into this. Don't get me wrong, you still get bad husbandry and pet shop advice here, but the threshold for bad practices has already changed significantly since I was a kid 20 years ago, and so have the expectation on the level of money / care you have to invest for your animals. Fishkeeping has been a popular and long established hobby here, including old communities of private breeders & associations and I'm sure that plays a role. I'm not saying your pessimism about the state of your hobby is unfounded, I'm just saying the cultures and norms surrounding it are subject to change. Thoughts on minimum care requirements and responsible keeping for fish were so different a few decades ago, and I can only hope the needle can be moved upwards for other hobbies as well.

I think people generally worry less about number of herps a person has because herps vary so much in the space and care requirements they have. For example with many of the gecko species commonly found in the hobby like leopard geckos, crested geckos, fat tailed geckos, gargoyle geckos, and even some lesser represented species like mourning geckos and banded geckos, you can definitely keep over 20 of these species and do it very easily and very well given the right budget. Heck of you keep nearly any micro geckos, dart frogs, or even something like garter snakes they likely will make up a few animals all existing within one larger setup. And when we see people with a lot of animals (especially the ones who care for them all right) they often keep smaller species except for one or maybe two larger species

Also to mention a bit of a light at the end of the tunnel it’s important to note that keeping reptiles in bioactive setups is getting cheaper and cheaper to do. I’m seeing gradually more and more products available for people who want to go bioactive and larger and more advanced forms of vivarium are always inching towards being competitive to standard vivariums. The other day my local small pet store had 75 and 120 gallon pvc enclosures for under 200$ and bioactive substrates, specialty uvb and lighting, and more were all commercially available on shelves. That’s major progress considering a normal person would walk into a pet store and have the care supplies available to them to provide care 5 years behind current standards. We are getting better we just need more enforced and self enforced standards like we see in Germany and many Nordic countries.

This dude sold red lights and heat rocks. This is a commercial for his new company that will probably sell red lights and heat rocks.

Sounds like you maybe haven’t listened to the episode yet? We actually discussed “red lights/heat rock” type equipment that was sold via his former brand. Hopefully have a chance to listen at some point!

@@AnimalsatHomePodcast I stopped listening when he said he had to please shareholders and make money regardless. You can't put your standards on hold to rake in cash and then decide you'll start a company with opposite values in terms of reptile care because you now have the cash to do it. I'm really enjoying your content by the way.

Yeah, I certainly see your point. But I can promise you, Ryan’s heart is in the right place. If you were to meet him in person, you would get along with him very well. Glad you’re enjoying the podcast, thank you for listening!
