Indeed! I think this conversation will go down as one of the most important conversations of the era. I appreciate Hasan politely challenging Marques on questions of social impact and the thoughtful dialogue.
Did you catch the line before a break where Hasan was like "I really want to hang out with you and chat but I knew that doing this podcast is the only way I could do it"
lmfao, I'm pretty surevthey can't afford him, he's at least o their level but probably higher. his show shouldn't have been canceled, it was bang on spot.
"The internet and technology created an idea of infinity. The reason why life is beautiful is because it is fundamentally limited. " - Hasan Minhaj 2022
I think we're just not yet adapted to infinity. It's just a new thing, and we'll adapt to it just like we adapt to once revolutionary things like deliberately growing food, having bright lights at night, controlling metal boxes at high speed, etc. It just takes time.
Hasan came in hard with the older brother vibes. Please bring him on again in a year or so - I'd love to see you guys revisit some of these topics, especially around Twitter, Hasan's shorts (which he must do!), updates on AI, ultra rich tech ceos, etc. and the whole "society of the spectacle" stuff Hasan alluded to.
When Marques brings out the tablet and Hasan brings out the post-it notes.. you know it's going to be one hell of a conversation! Loved every minute of it.
😭😭 that was so much deeper as I was expecting. But it also showed the very nature of how hasan and marquess being optimistic had their stories and worries extrapolated by the environment they are exposed to. Also giving insight into how marques managed to stay sane or the evidence presented by hasan of news etching to the internet just by few bad actors having incentive of no skin in the game, only adding to the worries was explored through all their lenses. Give me great pleasure in knowing that Hassan is using his platform to discuss ideas openly rather than just advocating. 😅
This is easily one of my fave episodes of any podcast ever. If I had a hall of fame of videos/podcast episodes this will be added. Great conversations and I think Hasan and Marques have a different perspective on tech that makes the whole episodes so interesting to listen to. 2 hours flew by!
What a bonkers episode. Hasan is clearly such an intelligent person and expresses himself beautifully, but still highly values the views of differently opinionated people, even if they seem a little misled. I love how he took this conversation as an opportunity to express his ideas to Marques and his audience with an open mind, and explore Marques and Andrew's views and personality in ways that they haven't publicly. I'll be checking out his other "content" for sure.
I like Hasan and admire the way he sees the world and tries to understand how things work. I slightly disagree with you in how he expresses himself, he tends to go the more verbose route with his economy of words. He's a comedian so I'll give him a pass since his art form is not about being conscie but rather more drawn out story telling to get his point across
Really? Is it really insane? Your comment is an example of the very internet culture they are describing where reality gets described in overly dranatic ways.
I can't tell if you're being genuine or not. This was a good episode, but I didn't walk away as spellbound. Anything in particular resonated with you that really grabbed you?
I remember a few years ago Hasan had this bit about how he had to take pride in his name and make people pronounce it correctly, because if they could get Timothee Chalamet right, they could get Hasan Minhaj right. It makes me really happy to see that everyone embraced that.
I really like this Collab. , as i saw how there was ice to be broken between them, more flowy conversations between them even if the topics are pre-selected. I really also enjoyed seeing how someone like Hassan really challenged Marques view on Technologies with a real sense of skepticism and being warry of the future. Hope to see more of these episodes in the future.
As an software engineer, I am actually right in the middle of Hasan and Marques' perspective. Even though I am very optimistic about technology, I am at the same time very sceptic about new and existing technology and it's influence on people and society. Very funny to be at both sides at the spectrum and see that in this long form interview. Long fan of both Hasan and Marques!
One of the absolute BEST episodes of Wavefomr. Also just a great "interview" in general, tough more like a conversation than an actual interview. Very nice, more like this please!
Aren't these meant to be conversational and not an interview. Seemed like two dudes who respect each other and have mutual overlapping interests that they were talking through
Simply the smartest 2 hours I’ve listened to in ages. Everyone brought their “A” game. Articulate, insightful, and fresh! I will download this one to archive for repeat listening. Thanks guys!
MKBHD has a duty in asking tough questions from these CEOs - 100% agree with Hasan. Would love to see this - if they have a good answer, it incentivises good behaviour.
What an incredible podcast episode. Hasan is so on the ball and prepared for this like an interview and Marques is incredibly well spoken to respond with so much of himself.
Hey it’s been a few weeks since this episode came out so I’m late to the party but hopefully someone in MKBHD staff sees this comment. I absolutely love this episode and longer form episodes like this. This deep-dive into tech ethics and overarching themes with tech corporations was super fun to listen to especially because everyone in the room seemed totally engaged. It’ll be hard to find another podcast guest that wants to interview you guys as much as the other way around but I’d love to hear more like this in the future. You guys are great and I want you all to know that the nobility and honesty Minhaj talks about is the reason I come back to you guys every week.
Personally think this is one of the most important tech videos of the year. Was not expecting this, but was glued to the full 2 hours. Thank you for letting him flip the script on you.
This was actually amazing. The chemistry between the Marques and Hasan is so good because they are coming from such different perspectives but still have so many connections.
I plan to listen this on repeat. Been listening to waveform clips for a while, this is the video that made me subscribe to the real deal. I use and build technology everyday, but that is 100% not the reason why I've been gobbling up Marques' videos. It's the craftsmanship and personality. I really miss Hasan's Patriot Act show. I'll be on a lookout for more of his work. Hassan's a badass.
Definitely the deepest a waveform episode has gone, but it was hella enjoyable. A lot of my tech worries do fall on the side where Hasan was troubled by the inherent NEED of being plugged in, but I also do find myself just conforming because it's easy. A lot of cool stuff to think about and unpack in this one.
There's a richness and level of care I love that goes into crafting 2 hour videos, or long form content generally, that typically can't live in shorter videos. Hasan and Marques are two of my favourite people to listen to on complex topics who have an opinion but are still open to good faith discussions and nuance. Never saw this collab coming but so glad it exists, as lengthy as it is.
I've seen lots of interviews with Hasan and this is probably his best interview. What probably made it good is that you have two people that love exploring ideas and have broad perspectives to pull from. Another reason might be that Hasan wanted to interview Marques because I've never heard of a guest asking the host how much time they have left to podcast
I'm an audio only listener, but I had to come here and say that I really appreciated how thoughtful and civil this conversation was. I loved all of Hasan's questions, and it was great to hear Marques thinking through all of them. This is probably the best episode of WVFRM so far. Keep it up guys.
I feel like Hasan is one of the few people that are concerned about where tech might go and it's a little bit alarming that it's not talked about more. Even tho there are some positives it seems like it's all a mask for the negative parts of tech because the negatives do have a big impact
This is hands down one of the best episodes of any podcast I've listened. I wish more people talked about these things. The pace at which our lives are changing due to tech is astounding and it makes me wonder how the future generations are going to adapt to these things and not fundamentally change the perception of what it is being human. I absolutely loved this conversation and the contrast in perspective Hasan brings. I personally tend to be a bit more skeptical about our future with tech and the level to which it will be ingrained in our lives. We need more people thinking about the future and consequences of the way currently the tech is going. This episode is going to be timeless and I am going to be sharing this with people to spark a much needed conversation about these topics.
It’s lovely to hear Hasan talk about life in this way. I think the explanation is there is another level of feeling beyond smell, touch, taste or sight that none of us can explain or materialize. There is some level of spirit or soul or whatever you want to call it that can never be replicated by machine. But it’s something that changes everything.
I listened to the audio...but came here to tell you that this is EASILY one of the best podcast interviews I have heard in a while. 2 hours wasn't enough for me. I wanted more. Thanks for making my commute more enjoyable!!!
This podcast was so deep. You guys both have significantly different experiences observing how tech effects our society. I love that Hasan was able to ask questions as well because it produced great back and forth conversation. Would love to see you do more podcasts like this!
The fact that hasan felt the need to apologize at the end for “disagreeing” with marques struck me as so odd, really drove home the point that the types of people he normally interacts with are much more toxic than a healthy level, I hope this was a breath of fresh air for him!
This was excellent, incredibly insightful to hear Hasan's view on the world, and to see his keen mind turned to interviewing you both! Thanks for helping us curate the internet we want to see.
This has probably been one of my favorite podcast episodes by a mile Which is saying something because I've been a huge fan of all of them It felt hugely productive watching this and the varying perspectives and open ideas was really something i think the internet needs more of rn
I never leave a comment but wow, wasn’t expecting this from a waveform podcast and very happy you let him talk even though it’s a longer than normal podcast. Also big up to the editing which is also top notch!
watching Hasan on this press/podcast tour, what really stands out to me is that he has a deep interest in people and he cares a lot about their perspective on the world. what a legend
Best episode yet, I loved how in depth the conversations got and how there was a lot of cordial disagreement. These kinds of discussions makes for such an intriguing listen. I would love to see some more of Hasan on the channel!
Can't wait for Hasan's shorts! This is my favorite episode yet. Hasan's discernment of humanity + empathetic comedy = *chef's kiss* Great vibes from all these guys. That's why I keep coming back this content.
Took me a while to get through the whole thing, but that was definitely your best podcast I've heard. Two very different views on the current state of technology (or at least social media) discussed with the proper deference for each others view. Really good stuff, I hope some of your CEO interviewees listen to this as well.
The world needs more Hasan Minhaj podcasts and insights / social commentary. Would be interesting to see how much his thinking and views change over time / age and experiences.
I WFH a couple days per week and I always love putting the WVFRM Podcast on in the background for some interesting tech talk while I work. This episode was a bit different though. About 15 minutes in I found myself glued to my second screen and hanging on every word. 10/10 episode if you want an incredibly enlightening and entertaining conversation. 1/10 episode if you want a background video you can only half pay attention to because this interview will SUCK YOU IN! You've been warned! All joking aside, phenomenal episode with some really interesting topics (and tangents!). Hassan is probably the most engaging guest I've seen on this show in a long time and comes off as a super intelligent and reasonable guy. Final Note: As always, I love the basketball talk. As a huge fan of both tech and basketball I'm sure you can relate to the fact that the venn diagram of NBA fans and Tech fans doesn't always overlap as much as we'd like. That Fantasy trade is pretty solid. KPJ and Oubre are both guys that will have high usage and will give you great numbers despite the fact that their teams aren't great (honestly probably because of it). Plumlee also is a walking rebound. Lebron on the other hand will obviously always stuff the stat sheet but will probably sit out 40% of his games for the rest of the season so it's just too much of a risk on any given week. His best hope is that AD continues to ball out and brings the Lakers back up to a competitive level where he feels like he has to come in and make a difference for the playoff push.
Hasan is usually the smartest guy in the room. He made this podcast episode amazing. I think the reason Marques stays in his lane and asks the fun, tech related questions during interviews is because that's what he's qualified to do. I doubt he would be able to give rebuttals in the way Hasan would. Either way, really enjoyed this one. Hasan is an amazing guy.
I'm normally an audio only listener of this podcast, but I had to come here to say what an excellent interview this was. You guys absolutely need to have Hasan back sometime for another interview. Also I'm looking forward to seeing these video ideas come to life!
this is clearly my favorite WVFRM episode. Hasam is so quick, thoughtful and articulate ! I was trying to tell if Marques was interviewing Hasan or Hasan interviewing Marques (Hasan asked the majority of the questions each was spot on). Great insights. I will definitely watch this again in its entirety.
My day got better and I have gained so much respect for Hasan Minhaj from this discussion! He demonstrates really meaningful perspectives on people and our society. I value having more of this in my life
With respect to the "content vs artistic" creator discussion, I look at the robot as an illustration of which side Marques falls on. He undertook what some believed to be an extravagant expenditure not only because it provides a capability which exceeds those of his fellow RU-vidrs, but because it affords him a measure of creativity that enables him artistically. As in this video, he frequently refers to the robot acquisition in terms of the competitive advantage it represents. However, the creative options it embodies are just as important.
My biggest thing, as a millennial who's about 30ish, with the whole "omg ditch our phones and just live in the moment, stop recording everything" sentiment. Like sure... But also, Alzheimer's and mental decay exists and as i get older and think about mortality and look back at moments i DON'T have photo or video of and regret that. Memories are fallible and i don't think it's a bad thing to commemorate moments of people/places/things/events/ that in the grand scheme of things are all temporary. I just feel like it doesn't have to be all one way or the other. Someone taking a couple photos or a video of their favorite song at a concert doesn't mean they didn't experience the concert. People can multi-task, people can aim the phone without staring at the view finder the whole time. Like i think people make a way bigger deal out of people taking photos of things than it actually is. Just, kinda like Andrew said, all the negatives of tech have a positive flip side and it's just not as simple as just "baaahhhh all tech is bad and ruining society ahhhhh". Acknowledge the nuance.
I love photography but I hate that pictures, which are an integral part of the human experience, have been monetized, data-mined, and basically weaponized *against* people.
I go back and forth with how I feel about taking pictures when I think something cool is presenting itself. A nice sunset on a calm day with city lights reflecting off the surface of the ocean, puppy sleeping in a cute pose, random interesting things that evoke a "wow this is cool, lemme save it" moment. In my experience there are a lot of those moments and they just end up getting lost under the deluge of those other moments. Ideally a picture should be a call back to a memory anchor point that takes you back to that day/time when it was taken. Then from there you replay the events prior and afterwards. When all you had was a film camera every shot counted even if it sucked. With our modern phones, you lose the value of the moment cuz you're so focused on getting it right, you miss the event that's actually happening. You become detached from the moment and end up observing yourself from a 3rd person perspective. As a 40 yo dude who's watched all this come up, mental pictures where you're experiencing the moment event in real time is way better. Sure you may forget, but that's what friends and family are for to jog that memory. I advocate being present. Sorry for the long rant
@@theglowcloud2215out of curiosity, why do you think photography is such a key aspect of the human experience? It's only been around for 200ish years. I wonder how much our capturing tools are starting to impact us from an individual to a societal perspective. It seems like it fosters more narcissistic behavior which doesn't bode well for collaboration
I made sure to come here to watch this episode. Usually listen on Apple Podcasts, but this is a special episode. They both dropped a lot of gems in this one! Hope to see Hasan back for more!
This is an absolute all-time great video. Huge fan of Hasan and the MKBHD team individually but this conversation was so articulate and fascinating and really important. Amazing job!
Two visionaries nerding out about so many topics on my mind. Much respect for both of you! Thank you for this epic collaboration and a fantastic long-form interview ❤
This was a really incredible conversation to listen to. Marques mentioned during the run on his interviews that he really wanted to get back to interviewing non-tech personalities to bridge those gaps, and I think we really got an excellent example of that here with someone from a non-tech space like Hasan coming in. Very thoughtful, thorough, and honest responses & questions from everyone involved, truly great
A true comedian helps us to better understand and appreciate our real life, by asking ourselves the right questions. Emotional intelligence versus AI. The Human touch… Thank you Hasan. And thanks for this exchange, milestone with philosophy, ethics, politics, and mutual respect.
I have seen every special of Hasan and I really appreciate the way he does comedy, but this conversation let’s people see a side of Hasan that no one might actually see. This is definitely one of the best podcasts episodes on this channel. Great work guys, loved the conversation.
You guys are not grandpas. I’m 24 and I feel the same way as you guys about how attached everyone is to their phones. That forced opt-in topic Hasan brought up is super interesting and important.
The BEST podcast you guys have had so Far! The introspective ideas about technology and how it influences us and humans and the morality questions Hasan Proposed... TOP Notch! Marques usually presents products in a very neutral way where as this was refreshing as it touched on if how human are interreacting with these products and whether its a good or bad/ Heathy or unhealthy outcome.

Hey! I have 30+ years of computing behind me, and I saw the internet rise. And from the start, I knew there is one rule for all you were talking about: The web is only worth of what you put into it. Like people who complain about seeing porn all over the internet clearly search for it. Even without any safety switch, my search results, timelines and suggestions are always clean. That's why I will always recommend and support all good faith efforts to publish culture, knowledge and ideas online. My #1 rule is if you're not going to add any valuable input, shut TF up. Also, I agree with both of you when you say Social Networks are people things and not technical things, and that most users should have their identity checked and displayed. This would stop a lot of bad behaviors. (I'm a sucker for the early G+) Thank you so much for having this long and smart talk and releasing it. Greetings!
