@@aspiknf Yes, all astrology is wrong. It depends on arbitrarily formed constellations somehow having influence on people based on the date and time of their birth.
Objections to astrology are based on "superstition and ignorance" has got to be the funniest things I've every heard. Seriously rolling here. Holy shit.
Exactly the same thing. That's the underlying reason why religion has been around so long. Believers have been sold an invisible product that cannot be tested to be true or not.
jimmy bluebos Bertrand Russell tried to explain this to people a century ago with the Celestial Teapot, yet we still have soothsayers leading people astray. Until we can educate the majority of civilization with critical thinking, we'll continue to have these inane arguments.
Taha Hagar Certainly, atheists can be bad people, but the difference is that bad atheists don't have a holy book that provides excuses for their evil actions. No atheist kills "for atheism". Since the Bible has numerous passages telling Christians to kill, even good Christians can be led to kill for God. That is the difference, and that is why belief in Christianity and the other Abrahamic religions must end, for the good of all humankind.
Taha Hagar Since I'm not Hitler, I can't say for sure. But I suspect Martin Luther had a lot to do with it. Look at his writings - I'm sure you'll find his reasons there. One thing is certain: it's far more likely that Hitler's antisemitism came out of his Christian upbringing and his immersion in a Christian culture that characterized Jews as subhuman than it did from anything else.
Taha Hagar What is this preoccupation with Jews? I'm not Jewish. Also, you seem to be ignoring the points I'm making. Are you going to address my points about Martin Luther? If not - if all you're going to do is rant on about the Jews - what's the point in you being here?
+Taha Hagar Stalin, Mao and Mussolini were indeed non-religious. But they did not commit their horrific acts in the name of Atheism. Atheism, unlike Christianity is not a world view. Atheism only adresses ONE point, and that is that we do not accept any of the god claims. All these other things you are trying to bootstrap on have nothing to do with Atheism at all.
you'd be surprised at how many doctors who are just as stupid as the average person outside of the human physiology field. Ben Carson is the prime example
@@GrammeStudio Ah, Ben Carson. There was a clip of him on TV recently saying something typically moronic - I told my boyfriend he's a brain surgeon. Took some convincing on my part that I wasn't joking.
I think sheldon cooper explains it best Penny: Okay - I'm a Sagittarius, which probably tells you way more than you need to know. Sheldon: Yes - it tells us that you participate in the mass cultural delusion that the sun's apparent position relative to arbitrarily defined constellations at the time of your birth somehow affects your personality. Penny: Participate-in-the-what?
It's rather sad that the newspaper boss didn't know the difference between 'will have' and the totally ungrammatical 'will of' - whatever that means. I guess the wrong person was getting fired as the astrologer was fairly harmless but possibly better educated.
Our whole solar system or galaxy could implode or explode tomorrow and it wouldnt be as visible as a ripple in the ocean compared to the disappearance from our place in the universe. Trillions of galaxies yet we are specail and important amongst it all. Yes if course we are. Hahaha
13:15 - And that's a classic example of a Barnum Statement, throwing out vague compliments that most people would agree too. Amusingly, the girl doesn't even agree and the backpeddling is funny: "You're passionate, tidy, and hard working?" "No. My car is a tip." "Erm... but you are hard working though..." "I guess?" "Exactly." /tries to look profound
Zeke Iddon Yeah. Plus, notice that she ALWAYS throws positive traits at people. "You're down to earth, tidy, hard working, nurturing, caring." Because how often are people going to say "No, actually I'm really apathetic, out of touch, and lazy"? She's using absolutely classic cold reading techniques.
Matthew Molyneux Racist? Allow me to ameliorate your confusion. He isn’t painful to listen to because of his skin color. His skin color doesn’t make a sound; his ethnicity plays no role. He’s painful to listen to because he is a moron defending astrology. I’m skeptical you could interpret my comment so poorly if you actually listened to his reasoning! Or perhaps it’s that you’re an astrologer yourself?
The blonde is a medium too who offered to take James Randi's $1,000,000 challenge and never did. I wonder why........ I have two words - Barnham Statements.
Listen to the first question she’s answering, she literally says nothing of value. She could’ve just said “the sky is blue, grass is green.” “If we had more tolerance between people the world would be more peaceful.” Fucking obvious.
In the first episode of The Big Bang Theory there was a wonderful scenario where Penny on meeting Sheldon for the first time tells him her star sign and says ''So now you know everything about me.''And he replies something like, ''Yes it tell me that you are one of those people who think that random selection of constellations somehow how affects your personality.'' :)
I spoke to a woman who told me she frequents astrologers, mediums and psychics. I asked her if their offices were in mansions or castles. If people really had the power to predict the future, wouldn't they be filthy rich? If they could speak to the dead, why would police departments hire detectives? There would be no such thing as unsolved murders; all the police would have to do is hire a medium to question to the deceased. Science has discovered thousands of exoplanets, stars and galaxies since astrology was created, yet astrology hasn't changed. Now where have I heard about something that ignores science and sticks to its archaic, unscientific traditions? Hmm...
***** Wow, sign me up for that! I personally would have stopped 9/11, 7/7, Charlie Hebdo... in fact all terrorist attacks. I would have told JFK, Biggie and 2Pac to duck and told Tyson to watch out for that right hand... and don't invite Desiree Washington back to the hotel.
Summers Time Entertainment Well, the "talking to the dead"-thigy wouldn´t necessarily be enough to solve every murder. There are victims who actually do not know their murderer, there are victims who never saw their murderer because they were killed from behind and finally there are victims killed by hired guns, so even if they saw their murderer they wouldn´t be able to tell who exactly they were and certainly not who hired them. So detectives would be still needed. :-)
Shato Nyruami well if mediums could solve even a single murder case based solely off speaking to the dead it would be a start at least. he was making a broader point.
kevin smith If mediums were able to find your lost keys it would be a miracle, sadly all they are able to is cold reading, which is a pretty difficult art to perform, which I readily admit, and then use the cold readings to defraud anyone stupid enough to believe them
Haha how is it a debate whether astrology is bunk? There is no scientific case for astrology. Anyone who understands what that means understands why astrology should be given no credence.
classic confirmation bias, the blonde hair said ''well you disprove astrology then'' this is called a ''shifting of the burden of proof fallacy'' and it's a ridiculous argument.
@@oscargr_ ethos and pathos are not to be ignored. logic can't prove everything true that is true. it is not the only truth-sending faculty of the mind
But of course planets are stars influence the planet as a whole no matter how small those gravitational interactions are. That's just the nature of space-time and the objects within it.
OK, I didn't make it past the "role in health care"! I actually watched the ad and enjoyed it more. I don't believe in horoscopes although they are fun to read. BUT, when it comes to the description of people born under certain "signs", I've found it to be eerily spot on, at least when describing Capricorns, every Capricorn I personally know (including myself) have those characteristics, as well as signs my friends are born under, it's just weird when they match so closely. I'm not a huge believer in coincidence, certainly up to a point, but damn sometimes shit just doesn't make sense. But, that health care remark sounds like he might be related to one of our American GOP members!! SCARY!!
Robin Addis-Vaughn There is nothing, absolutely NOTHING in astrology. The description of star signs relies on confirmation bias to work. Pick any 5 positive character traits and I guarantee you'll attribute at least 3 to yourself. It's all utter bollocks.
ali Servan sweetie, calm yourself! I'm not reading Tarot cards, or consulting psychics for readings, just that some of it is weirdly accurate. And, I totally agree, generalized descriptors that you're bound to fall into, as I said, I concur. I guess what really weirded me out is that maybe a year or two ago, my cousin and I were chatting (the one married to the Church of God preacher) and somehow we were talking about numbers. Maybe she had a new phone number or something and because I love her and respect her so much, I'm on my best behavior so no cussing. But, I said something like let me grab a pen, gotta write it down, then I muttered something about having to learn a new pattern. She said, what did you say? I thought I'd fucked up and let a naughty word out, I said, I can't remember numbers, especially phone #s and zip codes, I explained that I learned the pattern of the phone # not the number itself, same with zip codes. She got really quiet, I asked if I said anything wrong, she said no, but that's exactly what Lauren (her daughter who was born one day before my birthday) says. She asked me a few other questions, I answered and my answers were the same as her daughter's. Perhaps genetics?? I have no idea, but I've barely been around the child, so my influence has nothing to do with it, it is just very weird. But, I don't think your birth month has a thing to do with who you are or who you become, it's like a magic trick, we all wonder, "how the hell????" knowing there is a logical explanation, sometimes it's more fun to take the illogical one. Sorry, I know this doesn't make any sense, I'm just exhausted. I never convey my thoughts well when I'm this tired!! Hey, don't forget to send me a newspaper about the new Princess. I know you don't give a shit, but I'm captivated. xxoo night-night!
Robin Addis-Vaughn Ha! I do the same with numbers too, remembering the keypad pattern, sweet. I'll try to find a newspaper, there's bound to be a memorial edition or something xox
wackyfours Well, the bible even says that the stars should be used for signs, and for seasons. I'm sure that some people have made a superstition out of it.??? But I sometimes can tell just by looking at a total stranger what month they were born in. And I can prove it. People have certain attributes that coincide with the time of year they was born.
Because astrology focuses on the happy feel good shit people wanna hear. Rarely will you ever hear an astrologist saying stuff like, "Oh and Leos are all piceses of shit who don't bathe".
A V because people fucking can and you're not dead so how would you know just because you're a fucking atheist doesn't mean people have the same rubbish believes of you people make me sick!!
Of course. Until astrologists can show there is any legitimate and proven benefit to utilizing astrology for healthcare, it's just ancient nonsense that people refuse to abandon. A comparison to religion is quite on the mark too.
astrology, numerology, young earth, flat earth, tarot, etc, etc... people still believe this stuff and yet we like to think we are an advanced species.
"If people tolerated other peoples beliefs the world would be more peaceful" What a load of nonsense!!!! If people got over their stupid superstitions would be FAR better.
N.H.Alicia Of course, unfortunately "tolerate" is generally taken to mean "allow to get away with their bad behaviour" or "not to be criticized" which is just as bad.
Should I tolerate childhood religious indoctrination? Example: It's your fault Jesus was crucified. Who's Jesus? Jesus is the Son of God. Who's God? God is the Supreme Being Who made all things. Oh.
Astrology is widely "accepted" in Japan???? Where? When? Never heard of it. I am from Japan. - Oh wait, yes it is in every girly magazines then isnt it the same in the UK?
My brother went there. Apparently when you approach Japan from the mainland of China it's Korea and when you enter it from the sea it's Taiwan, so there's no japan as such. Sorry!
And then that patronising blonde woman tried to get some applause for praising the health service workers. I'm please that no one in the audience fell for that one. Disgusting
Crazy lady - "Virgos are normally very hard working" "You work hard if you're a nurse..." Nurse - "Yes" Crazy lady - "Exactly" Who DOESN'T work hard? Who ISN'T passionate about something? This lady is ridiculous.
First time a big Question Episode made me turn off and switch to another video in the first 1 min...Please do not Invite such people who are slow talking...Please team !
+z10ffi "Ok prove that it isn't then. See you can't. I win" is now becoming a phrase that automatically ridicules those that say it I think. It's getting well know to be a logical fallacy. Burden of proof unless I'm mistaken.
+Sarista Celestial She tells everyone that they work hard, as if someone would say, no not at all. She tried to kiss ass and then got very passive aggressive with her critic!
That lady seems to have a very basic understanding of astrology. There are millions of different types of Virgos. Not All the same. And you just don't know what's going on till you read someone's chart
"Are we right to dismiss astrology?" The answer to this simple question is a simple, emphatic "Yes". The notion that the stars and planets have any influence on our lives is, ipso fact, absurd. The alignment of the planets at anyone's birth is dramatically outweighed by the gravitational influence of the ob/gyn in attendance.
Easiest way to debunk Astrology. When they ask your birth info to try and get your birth chart bullshit, give them the wrong birthday. If you're born march 23 1990 tell them you were born October 12 1989 then after they do all the calculating and bullshit, reveal to them.
I agree with the gentleman who said, that the entire 17mins was about newspaper astrology with the 12 zodiac signs. The Hindu gentleman in the beginning explored a different level of astrology which nobody bothered exploring. Sad.
LOL. In Sweden we make jokes on April1, not in March... Gravitational waves are really weak and would only be measurable from really big happenings such as the big bang or a supernova explosion. Just calculate the gravitational pull from the moon on a human and youll see it's negligible. (Newtons expression F=Gm1m2/r2 gives about 0.003 Newton.. and much smaller from the planets!) Why would that force influence anything in our life? Of course we should dismiss astrology and also ridicule it!
I am sorry, am i missing something. How can you actually believe this stupid stuff? It is as silly as believing the earth is flat. I really worry for these people, but they have every right to believe it if they don't want to take their lives seriously.
Salway is also full of shit. It's not wrong to dismiss nonsense and we shouldn't just respect belief. And it's not someone else's responsibility to disprove a claim, it's the responsibility of the maker of the claim to prove the claim.
Bro, I am an academic and I can tell you I first didn't believed in it but more I am into it, it blows my mind how accurate and deeper understanding I get from myself..things in life i didn't understood i came to know about through astrology. The problem is, this is the area of Occult science ...not the traditional material science.
Of course we are right to dismiss this silly superstition. But if you are making a program about this, then, for the sake of the discussion, invite a spokesperson who can string a fucking sentence together. The first few minutes were like watching someone drown.
I think it's interesting that Anne Atkins says the ideology of "if it makes you happy, [so] believe it" (13:49) is patronizing, and goes on to say that "either there is or there isn't [something to astrology]" (13:57) and we should "discover if it's true or not" (14:26). Although that is logical, you would first have to define what would prove astrology as true or fale (untrue). We will not discover if astrology is true or not. Sorry. Do the accuracy of horoscope predictions make it true? If so, how accurate must the prediction be? How specific must it be? How many times must a prediction be true? How many independent astrology sources must be accurate, and how many times? At most you would be left with a statistic -- a static number that hold no real answers. These tests would be horribly subjective, to the point of dilusion. To 'predict' you will be more drawn to topics X or Y on a given day will be a very different experience for someone already interested in X and Y topics. They may say "Yes, I am drawn to X or Y" (because they generally are), another may say "Yes, I am drawn to X or Y" (because they looked into it as a result of the horoscope), and yet another might say "Well, I guess I am, because [reason]" (because something vaguely related to X or Y is or has become a part of their life), and few people would likely say "No, I am not interested in X or Y". Besides, they are (I would say is intentionally) vague, so as to apply to as many readers possible [the Barnum Effect]. Most horoscopes are less predictive, and more prescriptive (or descriptive). Looking into astrology (after watching this video) I read many of my own horoscopes, and got some very good advice (**general advice that seemed good for all persons, but positive, constructive advice, nontheless)... They told me what I aught to do, and what I aught not to do. They were good ideas I would have likely not thought until I read it in my horoscope. They were sometimes mixed with what I see as nonsense about the planets and stars, but advice like "if you need to pour your heart and soul into an important project, it's a good time to do so" is beautiful encouragement, and statements saying I would have "a nice feeling of emergence or beginning anew" are refreshing, and thanks to confirmation bias, I will find it in my day. Astrology and horoscopes are thus akin to daily affirmations. Though I don't believe the stars are aligned in some fashion that determine or describe my fate (which the point of believing would be to provide [more] meaning or purpose to my life), nor do I believe I likely hold some meaningful existence... now having looked into astrology, I will likely check my horoscope from time to time, for the beautiful purpose of exposure to their positive suggestion and affirmation. Unfortunately, that means I will be weeding out the nonsense on stars and planets aligning, or my life being a part of some universal purpose or scheme, to find those... But that's like almost everything: It should be taken with a grain of salt. [ THINGS TO LOOK UP: The Barnum Effect, and Confirmation Bias ]
As for the person at 7:07, I quote (paraphrase) Patton Oswalt - respecting people's beliefs is what's got us to where we are. We have to 'acknowledge' people's beliefs, and then reserve the right to say "That's fucking bullshit." Respect is earned. Monumental ignorance is easy as the proverbial pie (eating it, that is: making a decent pie is deceptively difficult).
Let me ask a simple question. How and why would the alignment of hot balls of gas millions to billions of miles away have or want to have any effect on some meatbag born on a small speck of dust revolving around another ball of gas? Sure horoscopes and astrological signs are fun to read about but its nothing more than that, entertainment.
The astrologer woman was deeply manipulative in this. She would find out what star sign a person was and then suggest they had character traits that are either very common or very flattering.
07:00 " I wantmy woopeddling moneyscam to be tolerant and respected! How dare youo discrimate against the scam of my ancestors." Karen teh Psychic (totes legit)
pisces ftw! 8:22 and kind and caring aren't how i'd define myself. i've seen decent correlation between personalities and zodiac signs, but correlation doesn't equal causation. and considering that modern psychologists learned that your personality changes throughout the week....
I typically enjoy this program very much; calm, thoughtful panel discussions are quite rare on TV & radio in my country. Despite that, this particular episode was simply unwatchable. Do those who consult astrology charts & horoscopes also utilize chicken bones in healing ceremonies?
The funniest part is that most these people don't know their actual signs. The real dates with signs are these Capricorn - Jan. 20 to Feb. 16 (Dec. 23 to Jan. 21) Aquarius - Feb. 16 to March 11 (Jan. 22 to Feb. 20) Pisces - March 11 to April 18 (Feb. 21 to March 19) Aries - April 18 to May 13 (March 20 to April 20) Taurus - May 13 to June 21 (April 21 to May 21) Gemini - June 21 to July 20 (May 22 to June 22) Cancer - July 20 to Aug. 10 (June 23 to July 22) Leo - August 10 to Sept. 16 (July 23 to Aug. 22) Virgo - Sept. 16 to Oct. 30 (Aug. 23 to Sept. 22) Libra - Oct. 30 to Nov. 23 (Sept. 23 to Oct. 22) Scorpio - Nov. 23 to Nov. 29 (Oct. 23 to Nov. 22) Ophiuchus - Nov. 29 to Dec. 17 (not included in the Zodiac) Sagittarius - Dec. 17 to Jan. 20 (Nov. 23 to Dec. 22)
