If the most invested people don't take it seriously (up to a point) then the casuals will have no voice to speak out for them. If there were not serious gamers then gaming companies would have a field day with the community when it comes to quality of service. It's a passion for some people and an integral part of their lives. Serious gamers help to keep gaming on the right track (most of the time) by pushing back against things that would become detrimental to every gamer one way or another in the long run.

In my opinion, yes. Sometimes at least. At the end of the day, these are entertainment products. These are luxury items. We don't need these things like food and water. Point being: even if a game is bad or whatever, I can simply just not buy it, save my money, and allocate those resources elsewhere. Call it a hot take, but even if we never get another good video game ever again, I'm okay with that. There are so many good games that have come out in the past and games sitting in my Steam backlog that it can last me for the rest of my lifetime. Bottom line is: I do genuinely believe that media in general is declining, but after a while, you get tired of that. I mean, good God, what isn't declining nowadays? I'm not trying to "toxic positive" or whatever, but goddamn, give me something good for once. It's depressing enough with people doomscrolling and constantly saying everything sucks on my feed.

Video Games used to be like what food used to be, you knew what you were eating most of the time and if it was tasty good, if not, also good. Now you dont even know what youre eating and what its purpose is, you just eat whatever while reminiscing how good it used to be.

The game reviews part got me thinking, Does it truly matter what others think of a game as long as you like it? when I was younger, I remember finding a game in BlockBuster and playing it, just seeing the cover art. Just simpler times, not a toxic fanbase, no dumb take on X. Devs just making games that were their passion projects and every one playing a game, seeing what they like, maybe your friend from school would suggest something to play. One of my favorite games is Jet Set Radio Future. Hasn't had a new game in over 20 years, but I played the full game on an emulator. It has so many noticeable flaws, but I like it. But yeah good vid man and congrats on the new PR.

I think this is definitely true for game developers. They have constant pressure to make something that generates more profits. Go back to making something you believe in and want to make for yourself and your community. This was how it used to be during the PS3/360 days. And we got legendary games that are still enjoyed today.

As a 35 year old that basically played video games his whole life and used to make it his identity to be good at games earlier on in life... I gotta say waaaaay more people take video games seriously nowadays. When I was younger I just didn't realize I was taking things too seriously 'cuz I felt like I had to be #1, and be knowledgeable about everything because that's what people knew my for and praised me for and didn't care about anything else about me. However that came at a cost of other things in life that I didn't really know about. Nowadays it feels like half the people I run into with video games take things way too seriously like I once did, and with how easy it is for everyone to get in their own little bubbles nowadays, it's pretty easy to see how someone can get that way too I dunno if it's everyone getting more seriously than they used to, or if me not taking things as seriously letting me have a chance to step back and realize how hard serious people are, or both. Of course, I don't think this is just a video game problem either. I feel like a lot of things coming together is making a lot of people hyper critical about stuff in general because they got their own insecurities that they take out on other people. I feel too many people take life way too seriously, and all I gotta say is remember that other people are humans too = )

Are you overthinking gaming? No, you are not. Keep thinking, that's your tool to struggle against the marketing oppression of the big gaming corpos. Are we (as a society) overthinking gaming? Hell, no. We are underthinking it, if anything.
@65firered
@65firered 8 дней назад
It's contextual. You don't always think about the problems with games all the time but there are times when it's important to talk about. There are ways to go about it and what ways are appropriate are contextual but you don't think about these things all the time. Sometimes it's serious and we need to take things seriously, sometimes we don't. Worrying about what to take seriously instead of thinking about why you should take it seriously is where I think many people fumble. Is a product bad because a bunch of political activists turned it into propaganda? Or is it just bad? Depends on the product, the people involved and your personal investment.
@DarkStar777
@DarkStar777 8 дней назад
Very well said. I agree with some of these points. It is contextual and sometimes a case by case basis.
@golfghost7582
@golfghost7582 5 дней назад
I definitely believe we're overthinking games, and entertainment media broadly. I think it may be because of the Internet's proliferation of media criticism and the political dogmas that tend to inform it--people can become too concerned about what a piece of entertainment nebulously signifies (whether a dev is 'woke' or conservative or any other nonsense), rather than how fun it is to actually engage with, because they're tying their own ideologies and identities to what media and brands they consume.

It's a fact Blackrock has gain a lot more power (money) in recent years and use it power to force LBGT+ on everyone including the game industry. They also seem to be buying up a lot of land. Why is Blackrock forcing LBGT+ on everyone is the real question. This involving a lot more than just entertainment. As someone once said just like to understand a electronic device you follow the current to understand what's happening in the world just follow the money. One reporter decades ago got into hot water when it decide to follow the money during World War 2 and learn there were parties who were funding both sides of the war. He said the government has ways to keep your mouth shut and since then have covered up the money trail so no one can follow it like he did. He was later allowed to reveal many in our government at that time helped fund German including the Bush family.

We take it seriously because we have passion for the hobby. You don't take tv shows seriously, because you aren't passionate about it, possibly because it largely isn't good anymore. If you don't believe that, ask yourself if you watched andor? I hear that was actually good. People just lose their minds over video games, because so many still have passion for it, and the hobby has problems right now, either made by bad times or nefarious actors. We all just want gaming to return to good, and the debate on politics is people trying to find the core issue and getting it out, whatever way you float on it. I am happy I take video games seriously, because they are worth it, always has been.

I think people are 100% taking gaming way too seriously these days. It's why I just make fun of people being dumb about it, stopped buying games day one. and took it for what it is. A hobby. A hobby that I do for me at my own pace and with what I enjoy. Since taking that stance in 2024 it's been one of my favorite years for video games in recent memory. Idc what the mainstream media or gamer is playing right now. I'm playing Persona 4 and having a blast.

Post watch: Ok. I’mma rant, and correct me if I’m wrong. But I think the crux of what you’re getting at here has less to do with the games themselves; of games as art, and our consumption of it. Instead, the discourse and vitriol stems from games falling victim to both overt agenda and the grifting that has come with it. We’re lost in the sauce as you put it. That is to say we’ve lost sight of the entertainment and escapist aspect of games and are more focused on the idea that games have become yet another vehicle for pandering and greed and messaging when they outlasted it for so long. Also, when thinking of minority vs majority, remember that you cannot account for those that have quietly walked away from things… like yourself with ring of power and such. Could that what was once of vocal minority, is now the majority.

I get what you are trying to say, and I think all in all you make a good point, you shouldn't be letting new releases (you mention LOTR, Star Wars, GoW) upset you, or at the very least tarnish your perception of things that you love. But on the other hand, games are in and of themselves an art form, one that has matured very very rapidly. It's not just that we are taking games more seriously than ever, it's that games are taking themselves more seriously than ever, they are not just things that small groups of developers made because they thought they would be fun/cool, no now they are products made by teams of 100s of people backed by billion dollar publishers that want to inject politics into them for whatever reason. People will critique art that they like, because they like it and want it to be better.

I've been thinking about getting the game Claire: the extended cut for the PlayStation Vita since my mom recently found it again and I got excited to play on the console again. It has a ton of great indie titles and the modding scene is amazing for the PlayStation Vita. I also have a Nintendo 2DS, a PlayStation 5 that I share with my family, a Nintendo DSI, and a Nintendo Switch. I love all the consoles that I have equally and I am not dedicated to one gaming company. I plan on getting a Steam Deck when I have enough money for it. I think that people have been taking video games too seriously. But, we as gamers just want games to be simple: just video games again. Without all the DEI stuff and the propaganda stuff.

@Fabio-lq7wb 7 дней назад
Well, controversy bring views, so many RU-vidrs use it to farm views, and this isn't even a new concept, the big media does that all the time. I am not saying this is wrong or right, but it is what it is. Anyway considering that, time is money, and players are also spending money to "buy" certain game (I am using quotes, because digital media is basically a glorified rent), when a certain franchise that players love start to go to a weird direction, people get pissed, because sometimes, way too much time/money was invested in that franchise, so I am not that surprised to see people taking games too seriously. The only way I could see people stop taking games too seriously is if developers stop producing multiple entries of IPs, you create a product, it is done and instead making a sequel, they create another IP from scratch. Why would that fix the problem? Well, with a new title there is no expectative behind, so developers can do whatever they want and since there is no one invested in that IP, people will or not buy it without any drama.

I don't think it's too crazy to be protactive and critical of the politicization/too much gambling/less than we used to have extra things in the gaming hobby. A lot of us have not gotten something we have been wanting/waiting for, and part of that fault is those idiots that "Play it safe", for example... CoD in VR, maybe someone really wants that, like "Population One" may be the closest thing but, CoD is never gonna get out of their safe zone... [insert angry verbal abuse here that could get comment removed by nazi google] .. "Playing it safe" like concord is becoming the opposite thankfully lol, less creativity= you're not getting the traction you wanted. at least mix and combine pre-existing genres for something new, I can't say what cause there's a lot of genres out there lol.
