I took the plunge into the w&n Artisan water mixable oils a couple years ago when I discovered them on a super sale for 75% off!! I couldn't resist and bought every color they had on the shelf along with a few of the available artisan mediums. I'm a super beginner when it comes to oils and my first attempt was frustrating to say the least, but I did a little more research and my 2nd attempt was a major improvement...I did a tulip a few months ago that I really enjoyed. I didn't have any canvas and didn't want to buy any so I gesso'd budget friendly watercolor paper and absolutely enjoy it for this medium! With the Gesso I can create any type of texture or smoothness I desire and that's been a super fun element to this medium.❤ I'm looking forward to more wm oil videos from you now👏 I've been enjoying your videos for a few years now.. Thanks, Emily! This is a great overview, and we're impressed with how well you researched this medium! Every artist needs to decide for themselves what's right for their studio, and for some, that means reducing or excluding volatile solvents- for health or safety reasons, or just because they don't like the smells. Water-miscible oils can be adapted to pretty much every traditional technique, especially with the introduction of so many WM mediums. We think this is a great medium worthy of serious art, and we'd encourage any artist to try them!

Nice idea leaving the white of the canvas. Reminds me of JMW Turner when he went from watercolor to oils; keeps that sense of light. I use water mixable oils and can share some of my findings over the years. Winsor and Newton is more of a student grade (I use them for blocking in mostly before modeling with more high end brands), so switching up to Cobra or Holbein (my fav) or even Daniel Smith would be beneficial. The pigment load is much better and they are more buttery like standard oils. Also, yes! Thinning with water seems to mess with the structure of the paint somehow, so I use W&N water mixable thinner. Though this thinner works with most water soluble oils, I've found that it does something weird to Cobra titanium white. Also, making sure you get all the water out of your brush is key to the paints behaving better. Great meeting you at Portrait Society this year! Love your work!

Hi Emily, great video. I would only add, you might want to try out Arches Oil paper for water mixable oils. I find using transparent oils (Artisan) as you point out goes on like watercolor, but it doesn’t fade like watercolor and with transparent colors, I can get some beautiful layers. I’m just starting out with these oils after doing watercolor and it is really hard for me to give up paper…maybe transparent oil color will be my happy compromise! Lovely painting for your demo, too:-)

Your painting is beautiful. I have a set of water mixable oil paint from Mont Marte and they are nice too, although I don't have any experience with oil paint but I wanted to try them. Watercolor is still my favorite.

I started out using oil paints when I was a kid but didn't like how long they took to dry. I played with watercolors a little but had no clue what I was doing and used way too much paint because of it. Switched to acrylic paint for years because of the quick drying time and easy coverage if you needed to redo something. I started painting with watercolor again during the lock down after watching some RU-vid videos and love them. I don't think I would switch back to oils, but still occasionally use acrylics. Thanks for the review.

I just started using them. I am recovering from ankle surgery so I am not doing any plein air rn, and needed to paint indoors. It is too cold to open windows, so I cant get enough ventilation to be comfortable with my usual oil paint. I am beginning to like them. I bought some of W&N's water mixable oil to use as a medium. I don't think I will be replacing conventional oil paints with them, but I do intend to use them inside over the winter.

I love horses! I grew up with them and I also grew up with an artist who used oils. So that is what I used. However, pet birds + a hand injury kept me from painting for 20 yrs. I'm now in the process of learning everything I can about watercolor. I have yet to do a horse painting...your horse paintings look effortless..how my work used to look to others... One of these days, hopefully, I can do watercolor justice. Unfortunately, I am a perfectionist. We'll see. ;-) So good to see you back Emily!!

I used Windsor & Newton water mixable cadmium yellow (more of an orange) to paint a mandarin orange (and reflection of the mandarin in a glass vase) of a still life I'm currently doing in acrylic. So far it looks pretty good, especially considering the set was bought for me as a gift when I was a kid way back 2004 ! Since it's water soluble I mixed it a bit with an acrylic primary colors and a bit of water to get different shades and tints of the cadmium yellow

Hi Emily, Your horses are positively gorgeous! Love them! I am a beginner watercolorist (thanks to your Watercolor Mastery step by step lessons). I have never painted or even drew previously. Watercolor is all I know. However this medium is very intriguing to me. Have you ever thought of creating a lesson with 2 different mediums? I think that may be so much fun. My neighbor uses both colored pencils and watercolor in her watercolor paintings and they are gorgeous!

I recently purchased a tube of titanium white water soluble oil paint from Windsor and Newton and used it on a painting with regular oil paints. Well, several weeks later most of areas painted with the regular oil paints are still drying but the areas where I used the most white paint are still completely wet. The paint is not drying. I think I may have bought a defective tube of water soluble oil paint.

Something new is always nice - thanks for sharing a new material rarely mentioned - I only ever hear rumours about it - reworking and correcting is a big deal - how bad does it smell? I got perfume conscientious wife and well no scent is a good scent....

Hullo Emily, I have several brands of water soluble oil paints. I have had good success with the W&N but the Holbein paints are very nice too! I have been wondering if anyone has tried using the Chelsea Lavender mediums? They make cleaners as well as oils and mediums to use instead of stand oil or lean & fat mediums. I wonder if your going to give it a try? Chelsea has a more friendly reputation and non toxic nature. I did enjoy this video and a wonderful departure for you and your viewers! Thank You.

Awesome! Curious how these compare with acrylics? I love the blendability of oils. Do you find that these water mixable oils are very similar to actual oil paints?

Actually they are oil paints they dry by oxidation and have had a molecule added to allow you to clean up with water! I use a medium to thicken or thin my paints rather than water, I use soap & water to clean up and that is GREAT!

I LOVE oils but not watermixable oils. My first oil paint set was watermixable oils. I hated them so I thought I hated oils. They get super sticky when they are drying so i didn't enjoy using them. The paintings I did with them stayed sticky ( not just tacky) for months. If you don't mind that or paint alla prima I think they are okay. Then I bought regular oils and noticed they had nothing to do with each other. The regular oils were buttery and creamy and didn't get sticky, just slightly tacky and that didn't even last long. So I fell in love with oils. I don't use solvents. I use linseed oil and gamblin solvent free range. If I need a light wash of color or underpainting I use acrylics. And when I am done I dip them in safflower oil or a brush cleaner from the "green for oil" line by Sennelier and try to get as much paint from them with a rag or paper and then wash them with soap. And if you paint everyday you can let the brushes dipped in safflower or walnut oil and they won't even dry. I immediately notice solvents in mediums because I get slightly lightheaded. I learnt this when I first started using oils and bought Liquin. And my fast drying watersoluble linseed oil by Daniel Smith gives me that feeling. It doesn't happen with my regular linseed oil so it must have solvent in it, and that's why it is fast drying. It bothers me that the packaging doesn't say anything about it containing solvent though.

My first love was oil paints too and Have tried those water mixable oil paints you just used and loved them. But Im very sensitive to smell and found I couldnt tolerate the smell of the linseed oil in the paints and stopped using them and swtched to watercolour and sometimes I use gouache.

Love this video. Your painting is gorgeous. I love working with water mixable oils. I switched to watercolors too, because of the mess, but these are just so easy to clean up. I use throw away paper palettes. Not as good as glass, but I'm lazy, lol. I also am careful about just putting out just enough paint, because, yes, it does get expensive. From watching everyone's you tube videos I've gotten into so many different mediums. It's fascinating, and I just love watching everyone. Thank you❤

I’ve bought these paints and I’ve never used regular oil paint before so I’m not really used to it. But is it normal that it isn’t dry after 4 months? I didn’t even paint very thick. Some parts are just sticky now but others are still completely greasy/ wet. It’s almost like your supposed to mix in some sort of drying medium. I think I’m gonna trash the painting because it just will not dry and with 2 hairy cats walking around it’s really hard to keep hair from sticking to it.

Emily, great painting and video. But I have still a question left, let me ask you. Do you know if the smell of the paint itself is toxic? I got a set of those paints here, and I got to tell you, they still smell a little bit. So, even if you're not using water, there's still may have some toxicity involved. But I was reading about those paints, Winsor e Newton claims that those are made from different materials from regular oils. They're made out of modified linseed oil. So, I'm guessing the paints may be less toxic than the regular ones to some extent. But I'm aware the pigments themselves carry toxic substances. I was using casein paint before as a substitute for oil, though. However, casein is a little bit problematic, especially when painting canvas. You need to gesso the whole thing with several layers in order to smooth and harden the surface as much as possible so the casein paint doesn't crack after it dries.

Any fumes from these paints are from the linseed oil, and nontoxic. Cadmium pigments are toxic, yes, but mostly in their powder form.

I usually wash my brushes with dish detergent over the palm of my bare hands when I'm done painting. Can this be hazardous somehow? People are advising me into using gloves and such, but I find them annoying to use. They get in the way a little bit. Should I follow those pieces of advice? I have some liver problems and such and I'm worried about those practices. Regards!

Hi Emily. Yes I’ve used water mixable oils. I never used regular oils. I will say I started in watercolor. But back when I was using the oils, water mixable s were still very new. And Winsor and newtons were the absolute worst. They must have changed their formulation because they were so dry, not buttery at all and it stopped buying that brand completely. I’m not used to the drag with oil paint and I’m not good at it by any means but this is the second video on them I’ve seen recently so maybe I will pull them out again.

I love the water mixable oils. I did not like the Lukas brand. They were hard to work with & stiff. I LOVE my Weber ones but they don't have them anymore.
