I think if a writer is using a pre-established character or setting the only reason they should make changes is if it will make the story better and they should be purposeful changes not accidental ones and most of the time I don't think you need to make changes to historical settings to make the story more interesting because the real world is actually quite interesting all on its own.
@AeonofHorus
@AeonofHorus 2 года назад
True, sometimes its needed to tell a better story, but at the same time I think its important to try and at least make the period authentic as a setting otherwise you lose the immersion it may have. Either way I think its interesting to compare.

@@AeonofHorus one story that I think does this well is record of Ragnarok which is a manga about a tournament between the 12 strongest humans from history and from mythology and a 12 strongest gods from various religions having a tournament to decide to fate of humanity and the fights are really cool because even when you know about the characters from history from mythology you don't know how they'll fight in record of Ragnarok because there's also some differences which adds some spice to the story I highly recommend you reading it I think it would also make for a great video.

Yeaaah, live is complex. But if fighting for the axis or not is a moral dilemma, you need the run time of a mini series to really put up a good argument, that doesnt make you look like ultra nationalist revanchist. I mean, against the sowjets, that would bring up some intersting dilemmas. Storytelling wise an accurate depiction of japan would be awful. There are no real stories of heroism or skill in the japanese armie of ww2. And the early successes against the european colonies and outpost, wasnt that much of a challenge and are inevitable linked to atrocities every regime would be ashamed of. Eastern front was..."tough"...but there was at least some underlying respect for the skills and tenacity of the other side. Making no prisoners, if you dont have ressources to feed your own people is one thing. Massacaring and torturing wounded soldiers in hospitals and yeeah the nurses...is another level. The main ironie is that, after declaring that surrendering under any circumstance rids you of any honour and humanity and then surrendering yourselve and still put yourselve in a victim position is very bold.

Obviously the crusaders in the russian manga are a tribute to the movie „Alexander Newski“ made by the famous director Eisenstein and with music by Prokofjev. The story shows the russian hero defeating a army of german knights by luring them on the frozen lake peipus where the heavy armor lets them break through the ice. The battle, in the reality only a small one, got in the stalin era an important part for the mythos how the russian nation was settled. This includes also the aspect that the russian nature, the harsh winter, helped the russians always to defend their country against invaders. It says „god is on our side“ and helped to establish the russian view of beeing „a holy nation“. Putin‘s Propaganda always beats on that drum.

Interesting insight, I watched an interview with one of the producers and he did mention there were a lot of cultural references in the film that Russian people would understand and I guess thats one of them. Thanks for the comment :^)

@@AeonofHorus what I find most fascinating is how the Russians are portrayed in it. Whenever the Japanese actually interact with the Russians, they aren’t portrayed as a barbaric enemy, but just kind hearted people. Even in scenes like when the soldiers first storm the island, they weren’t portrayed as merciless barbarians, but just people.

I think it's interesting that light novel writers can describe the war in their stories and we as the audience are familiar enough to get the references. Kamachi especially manages to beautifully blend the events of a war that has not yet happened in real life with the elements of the story to fit the storyline

@AeonofHorus
@AeonofHorus 2 года назад
The central stripe doesn't look yellow at all, it looks white, although yeah it has black which isn't on the French flag either. The way I said the word "French" was me trying to question what the hell that flag actually is, if anything it looks like the Imperial Germany flag lol with red, black and white. Either way idk why they showed this flag along with the moving troops arrows as that basically implies they are affiliated with said flag. Belgium didn't really have an army after the occupation.
@MoonyRuney
@MoonyRuney 2 года назад
@@AeonofHorus I must disagree with you on it not looking yellow, but white. I just went through and colour picked the central stripe in photoshop, and it's listed as being #aba672, which went googled, shows itself being on the yellow hue. Granted, youtube might've fucked with it and the original verison is different
@MoonyRuney
@MoonyRuney 2 года назад
But yeah, there shouldn't be a flag there at all unless it's nazi soldiers reinforcing Warsaw, but used the belgian flag to represent the 2 belgian SS divisions? entire scenario is weird tho

@AeonofHorus 2 года назад
@@MoonyRuney I must be colour blind then. Still stupid it decides to highlight a country that wasn't of any importance in 1944 while also showing troop movement arrows next to it. Not that France had much of an impact either at that time, but still more than Belgium.

5:53 In reality, all American aircraft were launched roughly between 700-800. Coordination issues between flight groups, lack of training/experience, meant it took more than an hour for aircraft to take off, assemble and attack. Anyway, thanks for mentioning Zipang, loved that show and I also confirm the modern aspects (the Mirai and AEGIS systems) seem to be fairly accurately depicted as well. Also if you've liked Grave of the Fireflies, then maybe you would also enjoy In This Corner of the World, though I suspect you probably watched it already as you seem to be fairly deep as far as ww2 anime goes...

Glantz's ''Operation Barbarossa : Hitler's invasion of Russia, 1941'', and ''To the gates of Stalingrad : Soviet-German combat operations, April-August 1942''. D.M. Glantz notes on multiple occasions that Soviet Rifle brigades and divisions did not lack small arms such as rifles.
