I can show you pianists who can sight read advanced music sheets but who cannot play from a lead sheet to save their lives. These are also pianists who cannot improvise. Some people weren't trained the way that you train, but that does not lock them into the beginner tag.

Totally - I said in the beginning of the video that there are different ways to classify this... and this applies to people who want to play The Beatles, Billy Joel, etc. etc.

Do you know how many people enter collage for a degree in piano performance but don’t have all there scales down? More than you would think, they can play advanced music but not play scales fluently, I would still count them as advanced players lacking foundational skills.

I guess I'm not sure where exactly I land. I've been an improve player for years, know my major, minor, dimished chords, sus4, add2, 7th, maj7, use chord sheets, play fills, runs, blues scales, tritone subs, chord extensions, understand b5, #9, etc. BUT, I still don't know all my scales, cannot read music notation, and have never had a lesson. Guess I'm a hybrid of sorts.

As a hobby pianist "intermediate" means that you are pretty good, not mediocre. I guess the majority of hobby players is "beginner".

I would like to say I'm a intermediate, But many people would say I'm not. I'm okay with the music in front of me, take it away & I can't remember the order of the chords.So frustrating.

Thanks for that assessment test. It made me realize I am almost at full intermediate. I just need to work on 2nd and 3rd inversions of 7th chords in all the major keys.

Thank you Kaitlyn, I’ve always wondered about how one goes from beginner to intermediate. I can do most of the things on your list, but not as proficient or smooth as I would like. I’d say I’m maybe late beginner or early intermediate, I guess.

Great way to self-evaluate. I've been taking online lessons for a little over 3 years and can play lots of songs but not as well as I would like. I know all the major scales and a few minor scales, and all my inversions, but struggle to make my playing sound smooth and add any enhancements. Probably halfway between beginner and intermediate.

I am definitely still a beginner, but I'm also not your core audience: I'm not trying to learn how to play chords for songs I like and improvise, I'm looking for challenging piano pieces that sound great on their own, no vocals, no other instruments. I certainly should learn scales at least, but I don't think I really need chords right now.

As a piano player this is my advise, you absolutely need chords right now. Chords are at the core of music theory. Chords are what make up the melody of any song or piece that you want to learn. Focus on them first, put in the work and your progress will be greatly accelerated in a short period of time.

Agree with Richard - chords are the foundation no matter the genre. You'll be reading music way faster if you know your chords.

@@richard135b7 the thing is, I find this boring, and this channel tries provide motivation for studying chord that doesn't align with why I play piano. I don't care about playing chord tabs for my favorite songs, I want crunchy cool piano solos :)

@@explogeek OK I'm only going to make only one more comment. Learning the major keys and the diatonic chords within those keys is the core of music theory as I have told you, as Kaitlyn has told you. It doesn't matter how boring it is but whether you want to perform like Billy Joel, the great jazz pianist Art Tatum or play like Mozart following that path will get you there much faster. Learning to read sheet music too will be much easier because instead of seeing individual notes you'll see patterns of notes on the page and yes chords that you already know. So learning to read sheet music will be a breeze. This whole scenario you presented reminds me of a saying, "you can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink" Good luck : )

@@richard135b7 thanks for your thoughts! It's definitely something to think about. I recently did start reading sheet music, and though I don't know the chords, I still slowly start to see multiple notes played at the same time as something whole, not note by note. But it's mostly intuition based on intervals between notes right now. I really don't want to just drill chords, it's not something I find fun to do, I'd rather study arpeggios and scales, I find them... cooler? I don't have too much free time, and I want my piano journey to be fun, and I don't currently find chords fun.
