This never happened to me before but honestly if someone looks at my jersey and be like “I don’t approve this jersey” my reaction would literally be “who tf asked for your approval?!” lol. It’s one thing to have standards for your own collection, but it’s another if you apply the same standards to other people’s collection

In regards to team store fouls, i recently got my Kraken jersey embroidered at the team store when i went to a game. I got it first season, no name/number. So i added Donskoi and i also had a inaugural season patch to add on. They mailed me my jersey about a week after the game, the inaugural patch is on the wrong side. 😂😂😂

I've seen some pretty foul Fanatics sweaters. It's the biggest reason why I was against them having that contract.

I think the only real jersey debate I ever heard that rubbed me the wrong way, was a local sports broadcaster boldly declaring a grown man should never wear a jersey. He set the age limit pretty low too, like over 22 or something. 22 years old and up, means you have to stop wearing a jersey, and get a polo shirt with the logo on it like a grown up. (he did not say this about the shirt but that's where i inferred he was going with it) As far as jersey fouls, I do remember the Puck Daddy posts about them. But those were mainly the wrong player, split jersey, misspellings that you would naturally assume is a jersey foul. When you start nitpicking details, you have to stop and say, it's not that deep. But hey, if the person wearing it doesn't care, chuckle sensibly to yourself and move on. 🤷‍♂

As a kid, my grandmother got me a jersey of my favorite player Chris Kunitz. The only issue was that the I and the T were swapped. For obvious reasons of what that spelled, it's safe to say wearing it to school didn't go to well 😂

I’ve had people tell me having my own name on the back is a foul. They get the blank stare and then I walk away. Unless their wallet was open to pay for it, they have no say on what I put on the back (short of the fouls you mentioned). I have a small, but distinguished collection across many different manufacturers and I love every one. 99% of the people I meet in a jersey don’t care who’s name is on it, they just love (or hate) the team on the front. I've decided recently that the only foul I actually get annoyed with aside from the obvious ones is when you've got a players name who never wore the design at all, like having a Buffaslug with Dahlin's name on it. Obviously do what you like, but that was always weird to me

I don't care about the materials. It's the design, player, colors, and manufacturer. Keep rocking your fouls if you want. No one is going to have you thrown out of a game or dump their drink on you for it.

In addition to jersey's and names, prior to 1977-78 there were no names on the back. Team logo, number & a face were the identifiers back in the day.

I got flak on Reddit for posting a picture of my Devils jerseys. One is a RR 1.0 with Stevens 4 on it. 😂

One time I was looking to buy a Marian Hossa Blackhawks alternate jersey in the early 2010s, from when the Blackhawks alternate was based on the 2009 Winter Classic jersey. The person trying to sell me the jersey presented me with a Hossa Blackhawks alternate, with the Winter Classic patch on it. They couldn't understand why I wouldn't buy it, even after I explained that Hossa played in that game but for the other team and I wanted a jersey without the patch.

Collect whatever you want, using whatever standards that are meaningful to you. If other people don't like it, remind them it's none of their (bleep bleep) business.

I have these sublimated Devils & Ranger jerseys, I got at a bulk of 15 each at about $5 each!!!! That's an absolute steal here, the Devils (Hughs) is pretty much this years uniform while my Rangers jerseys (Messier) seems to emulate the early 90's dark blue variants?!! They're all virtually perfect except the NHL shield is exactly level on the V-neck collar and the logos are huge!!! The closet thing I can find to these are those late 90's NHL "Street" which these ones seem to follow without the extreme 90's design. They even emulate the current sizing ratio also...They're unique/perfect and I can't find any info about them?! The name brand A&O (Above Ordinary) doesn't resonate with me either?!...

I am in the process of having Hockey Authentic customize me the new white Hartford Whalers jersey with Francis #10 and the captains patch. He never wore an adidas jersey but who cares!

I bought my wife (Canucks fan) a "What if" Vancouver jersey based on if Gretzky had signed in the 90's and she loves it. Wears it to games in Britain where we Brits are both laid back enough and not so hot on the nhl history to care about it's authenticity. I own a Gretzky Rangers jersey. I got it when he played for the Rangers. Also, at the time, there were no "throwback" jerseys.

I have a game worn jersey, a worn pre-game specialty jersey, and a couple of variations of my team (the Caps) jerseys...I say collect what you enjoy.

I only find it odd when the jersey of a player is radically different in style from what they wore when they played. For instance, I can't bring myself to get a current era Avs jersey of Sakic or Forsberg, because the design has changed significantly since the time they played, and I think it'd just look weird. Then again, that's just me.

The only jersey I've ever commented slightly negatively about is when I've pointed out to a person that their jersey had a spelling error on it (HERLT)...they'd apparently just gotten the jersey and hadn't noticed it until they took the tag off. It was a stranger so I have no clue if they were reimbursed or anything, but yay fanatics!

I am for my own personal collection. All my ProPlayer jerseys only have players from the 99-00 season.

For me if you have a player who never played for a team or there’s something misspelled that’s an automatic foul. I also really don’t like when people sew two separate jerseys together. Unless your kids play for both teams, I don’t like it.

If the athlete played for that team, I've got no problem with it. Pavel Bure orca jersey? Fine by me - but for my personal collection I don't know if I would like it. It's kind of fun to figure out what players wore what jersey when, so when I decide to get a jersey customized I try to make it era-correct. That being said, I don't mind if the manufacturing of the jersey is era-correct. I'd love a Gretzky Oilers jersey and I don't care if it's a Reebok or Adidas because as long as it's royal blue it's practically identical to what he wore. Same with throwbacks or reverse retros - I think putting Jagr's name on a Penguins reverse retro makes tons of sense. But if someone put Jagr's name on a powder blue Penguins jersey, I would think it's weird for sure, but it wouldn't bother me enough to tell another person that they're wrong. 100% agree with Shannon that people can spend their money how they want.

Kinda surprised you didn't point out that Gretzky's Edmonton wore Nike not CCM. I just won an Ovechkin signed Mitchell and Ness Stadium Series replica. Definitely would rather have it on a Reebok pro, but I'm not complaining too much.

I didn't even know the wrong era thing counted as a foul, as long as they played for the team at some point it seems like a cool way to rep a favorite player or remember/honor someone who's retired or traded. If it's rude and funny enough you can get away with a foul too, like wearable trash talk; if someone put McDavid's name on a 90s-style Kings jersey the year his contract is up for example.

If Im buying a jersey I would like it to be at least somewhat accurate but those are the only fouls I dont really like. For example a couple years ago I bought a Griffin Canning Angels jersey and got disappointed to receive the jersey and notice immediately that the number font the jersey had on it was wrong in that it didnt include the same styling that the 4 and 7 do for the Angels. Wasnt worried enough about it to return it but I made the decision that I wouldnt buy from that site again and I also dont wear it either when I go to games.

I don't mind if I see someone with a jersey that wouldn't make sense. It's what they wanted. I would love to have a Rob Ray or a Dominik Hasek current goathead jersey despite them never wearing that but the jersey is based off what they used to wear anyway. So that shouldn't be jersey foul if anyone could even enforce that anyway.

Excellent video topic, Shannon! Thanks for creating this one, Shannon. My thoughts on the jersey foul issue with the ones you showed us... 1. Cliff Ronning (Nashville Predators) - While the purists would call it a foul, I do not. Ronning played for the Predators during the era that jersey pays tribute to. Personally, I did the same thing. Bought the Arizona Coyotes' RR1 jersey and put Keith Tkachuk's name, number and captain C on it. There was not a current player at the time worthy of putting on it instead. I don't like OEL's name being so long on a jersey, so that did not help. He got traded anyway. In the case of Tkachuk, it was before I ever knew I was going to later acquire 3 original authentic Coyotes jerseys they first wore (home, away and original alternate). After it was delivered to me, it looks great and I'm glad I went with Tkachuk. I know it is one of your top ranked jerseys in your entire collection! Your Predators RR1 jersey with Ronning's name and number actually looks really good. 2. Rogie Vachon (Los Angeles Kings) - If he wore that jersey even with a different neckline, it is not a foul to me. Wore the same colors, logo and I think the name and number fonts are the same as it was back then. 3. Wayne Gretzky (Edmonton Oilers) - Same case as the Rogie Vachon jersey. The fact it is an Adidas jersey is not any foul at all for me. For me, while my top priority is to collect authentic jerseys to as 100% accurate as possible, I do make exceptions like the Keith Tkachuk jersey I mentioned. Unfortunately during the very beginnings, I put my own name on a few jerseys. Now I plan to get them stripped and accurately put real players on them. I guess it all just depends on the jersey in question. Either way, it's a good debate, but if the jersey is a player who played for the team, no issue for me.

People are weird about brands. I buy a jersey for how it looks. If it has the same colors, stripes, etc. as what is or was worn on the ice, who cares about the company logo on it? I support teams, not companies.

I bought a Chico Resch jersey but on the KC Scouts. Technically he started with the Rockies as the scouts only lasted 2 seasons. I like the KC jersey so much tho and no one really played for them so this was an acceptable jersey to me

I have a CBJ jersey that was an Atkinson. When Cam was traded to Philly and we signed Gaudreau, I had a new name plater put on the jersey for only $40 rather than spend $175 for a new jersey. I committed a jersey foul for this sacrilege but I DON'T CARE!!!!!!!

Mentioning Gretzky in a Canucks jersey made me laugh. But then it got me thinking. How about a Boxing Day video on the top 10 jerseys that would upset a fanbase? For example, an Oilers jersey with Lemieux on the back. Maybe a Pittsburgh jersey with Ovechkin. Would be fun :)

Most retailers do not sew the #'s on, iron on only. They don't last long with regular wear. That to me is a major foul. CCM were the best. Let us hope Fanatics does not screw it up too much.

Just got me the new Ducks 30th anniversary jersey with Kariya on the back & I will treasure it.

I used to work in a sports store that had the cresting (name and numbers) put onto the jerseys. I admit to being a purist to the style of jersey when the vintage lines came out. What I mean by that is one of the Boston Bruins jerseys that were introduced didn't have name bars (original 6 era I guess or shortly after expansion maybe) but the Bobby Orr Jersey I had made up for the store to sell reflected that style. I had my fair share of Gretzky on the wrong Oilers colors jerseys done but I figure if the customer is spending that kind of money then it's their choice (like the couples who would do top and bottom #69 jerseys to be cute) . End of the day as a customer you do what you want but from a store selling it, you have a right to expect the look to be right, might not be the same material (old school heat pressed number or such) but it should be close as a replica.

How about a throwback from before names were on jerseys? Do you put a name on the back? I have an early 70s Penguins throwback I got years ago from Ebbets Field Flannels (they don't sell these anymore). I put 26 on it for Syl Apps, but no Apps name because they didn't have names back then. And with a name it would have cost more, so why pay more to have something that shouldn't be there?

My take is it’s not a foul to have a old player on a current jersey because it’s legacy but it’s weird to see a current player on a older jersey, it’s weird to see a kirill the thrill on a 00s red wild jersey. Even with retro jerseys like a team classic is fine because manufacturers don’t make them

Personally the only thing I consider a foul is if you have a jersey with a player on the back but with the wrong number or if the name is misspelled

its fine if you want to hold yourself to that standard, but let other people do whatever they want in that department. not everyone wants to sit down and spend the time so that should be respected

Interesting thing I did recently was I did get a Calgary Flames Reverse Retro 2.0 jersey and got Iginla numbered 24 however on a Fanatics which isn't official. Felt for that jersey to have a little bit fun with it. Not the only Calgary Flames fan I've seen Reverse Retro 2.0 with Iginla 24. Heck I've seen Kiprusoff 34 on Reverse Retro 2.0 which that's crazy as yes Kiprusoff did play for the Calgary Flames but wasn't a Calgary Flame when they wore the pedestals. I felt I did a double reverse retro with Iginla 24 as when he was a rookie with the Calgary Flames they wore those pedestal jerseys and that's the number he wore before switching to 12 in his second season when it was available. Did buy an official reverse retro and put Kadri 91 on it so I have an official Adidas reverse retro. Unless it's putting a player who didn't play for the team especially a generational player like Gretzky on a Canucks jersey or Crosby on a Flyers jersey. Fouls aren't strict. Brands and styles change many times that unless you're picky it'll take some work to get the exact eras right. Example showing Wayne Gretzky jersey in that style for the time but a different brand making the jersey. My long winded answer to this.

I totally get your points... I'd be against knock-offs. And then you get into the on-ice vs. retail variations. I think for NHL ones, I've passed on a Mitchell & Ness Brind'amour Canes '06 Cup replica because at the price they want, the patches and material is subpar to Adidas.

I got a blank Hawks jersey at one of there conventions a few yrs ago and u could customize it (Reebok jersey). I made a Probert. Obviously Reebok wasn't making those back in the early 90s. And I've never seen anyone with a Probert. So, I would say that doesn't matter the company make.

That's what I wonder about custom throwback jerseys are those mainly kitted jerseys because you can go on there and still get CCM jerseys from different eras would those be considered fouls or fakes

For my jersey collecting i just want the jersey with the name to be a similar style to what they wore. I have Keon on the Leafs RR2 since he wore that similar style. I don't put throwback names on non throwback jerseys and vice versa. Although you often see that in Toronto a Clark on the current home or away and it's always interesting to see but I can't see how someone could be bothered by that. Although current names on throwbacks are always funny to me just cause how rare it is to see

I learnt about jersey fouls from the Post-Gazette 15 years ago, when they had a game blog (oh how I miss it). The biggest fouls they called out were "hoody across name" and "wrong team considering teams playing"... jersey's from arch rivals were fine. Nobody ever mentioned the make of the jersey.

Me i always want to have and wear Anaheim Mighty Ducks jersey with Stanley cup patches from 2003 were they duel the Devils at the final with Paul kariya #9

Got a couple of 'fouls' in the collection, a CCM Isles white / NAVY / orange with 22 / BOSSY on - and a current Flyers black Adidas alternate with 88 / LINDROS, obviously neither player wore those style of jerseys.

I just bought a paul kariya jersey on ebay and it came and its great it’s definitely not real though. But to the naked eye it looks good is that a jersey foul. It has all the patches on the sides the numbers last name the C.

I went down the rabbit hole of if it's not MiC then it's not "real" because it's a different fabric/stitching/cut and that just made me collect gamers. Now I'm hardly satisfied if I have a gamer but it's not photomatched with 2 or more photos 🤣 to be fair getting a game worn may be as low as only double what a customized MiC to spec is depending on the player

McDavid's sophomore year I saw a Flyer fan with a jersey that he had squeezed "Collar McBroken" onto. I just picked up a custom RR trophy Iginla with a captain C... there's a lot wrong with that if ya want to nitpick but idgaf Reach but TECHNICALLY... Gretzky's # is retired league wide so if any player COULD be on every team jersey, it would be him.
