Honestly some of the best acting ever! Mrs. Slocum and Mr. Humphrys are amazingly well developed characters. Too bad shows aren't quite living up to the same comedic level these days! Thanks for putting this out there Kris
In reality, Harold Bennett, AKA Young Mr. Grace, was born in Hastings, Sussex. After leaving school at the age of twelve, in his early life he toured America as a clown with a circus and later taught English at the Working Men's College in London. During World War I he served as a courier, initially on horseback, then on motorcycle. After the war, he took up acting and eventually worked as a stage producer in the Tower Theatre, in London. He subsequently pursued a career as a draughtsman for an electric company, only taking up his acting career again following retirement.
A significant thing in all the episodes that strikes one again & again is the perfect timing of the actors when delivering their lines_ something without which great comedy can' t be achieved.
Arthur Brough still funny watching him suck that soup up with those straws. I've seen this innumerable times ... mans been dead thirty plus years .. . and is still funnier than most comedians still alive.
This episode is probably the only one in which Mr. Lucas is in total command, who is otherwise looked down upon by some colleagues as some kind of a pariah, who never belongs to the inner circle. Mrs. Slocombe is the feminist par excellence at a time when feminism was not political.
Just wondering if I'm the only American on this thread, I remember watching these on the PBS network almost forty years ago. So much funnier than almost all sitcoms produced stateside
American here. I remember my mom would let me stay up later than my bedtime to watch "Are You Being Served?" and "Allo Allo". That was about thirty years ago. Still love the show to this day.
Yes me too. I grew up with rabbit ears instead of cable and I would make special efforts to tune in PBS when I would hear those register chimes as I turned the dial. Even today I’m laughing my butt off harder than I ever have with our sitcom options
I loved that their origins were in no way related to Mr Grace but there is no limit to Mr Lucas' imagination. That stretch was really funny and well put together

John Inman was such a great actor and personaity. They should have gave him his own talkshow, but not as him self but as his mother as in this episode. I'm sure that people would have loved it!

I think Mr Lucas has a thing for Mrs Slocombe. Ha, ha! He reminds me of those annoying schoolboys in primary school who kept pulling little girls ponytails.
Dawn...the last part (tails) sounds 10 times better than my school. Boys used to slip a piece of mirror to the shoes under laces to look up girls' skirts! The girls started wearing pants.
I disagree totally. Slocombe's affectations to someone above her class makes her a perfect target for jibes. Who else could score the right effect but Lucas? Go back to the first couple of episodes and you'll see who has a thing for who!
Have you seen the one where they think that Mr Humphreys is Old Mr. Grace's kid? It's good! I'll try to figure out what episode it is and I'll edit my comment so you can find it easier if you've never seen it. Edit- S8E5 Heir Apparent. You might be able to find it on RU-vid, but I'm pretty sure they have it over on Dailymotion if it isn't on RU-vid. I say that because I know I've seen it within the last year, and I don't have access to any other platforms that it would be on.

I bet i'll find a better copy of it at Dailymotion . recently i've been engrossed with two British drama series . One is "The Secret War" circa late 1970s . It's about the Belgian resistance to the nazis and getting british fighter and bomber pilots who crashed and survived in nazi occupied Belgium and France back to the UK during ww2 . The other is called Heartbeat circa 1990s ? . I am up to season 7 . Its starts out as a london bobby(regular police officer) and his wife who is a medical doctor moving and doing there professions in a small Yorkshire Town. its setting is the mid 1960s, and often they use hit pop and rock songs for background music from that era. i remember them from childhood ! cheers !
It's weird in this episode they call Mrs. Slocombe "Rachel" cuz in other episodes where first names are used she is always called Betty. This show is brilliant!! The AYBS Movie is hilarious too!!
This is one of my only complaints of this show. A lot of inconsistencies. Also anytime someone left the show there was never any explanation of where they went. Except for Mr. Tebbs.

at least one individual portion sized container of Dannon yogurt at that time was about 12 ounces for about 50 cents, tall as a can of beer and wider at the top . today you get a 4 or 5 ounce container for a dollar if you're lucky .
I know, right? It's like some sort of brilliance in how Miss Brahms can tell that it's actually a man in drag, but can't seem to recognize the man as Mr. Humphries in drag(or rather his actor in drag)! Sort of a nod to the audience!

Best evening entertainment there is in my view, compared to today's tv rubbish! Enjoy!

Mr. Grace was not kind, let's be honest. He's a businessman through and through, and only cares about the bottom line. While he's off with pretty young ladies on yachts and vacations and to the pictures, his staff are paid next to nothing and scrambling to make money, often coming in early or staying late and meeting after hours. John Inman and Molly Sugden were really the central characters in this show, although all of them were fantastic. Such a great team. Sad that almost all of them have already passed.
good on you for making this show available to watch, its hard to find the full series in DVD, its one of the shows of the era where the dirty mind of the audience had to fill in the blanks, where as these days, comedy is basically, the F word and all of the others of same nature. writers these days can't write comedy without using direct references to the obvious.

At the same time he did work hard, he inherited the business but he kept it alive for over 50 years. His role may have been more of delegating one, but without his actions the company would have went under less than a year after he got it, no doubt. As for Peacock? Yeah he's just a prick with him. But in one episode (the fog one) he did actually give him a lift to work. Although he forced Peacock to ride on top of the car rather than inside, because he didn't want any fog in the car. As for Humphries- meh. So?
