Hi Nick, Extreme quality content again. The tulip bulb event and into Ray`s research are fascinating examples. My caveman example and expressed by some other folks is it seems like for most, not all male`s primal instincts are where you were at between the ages of 10-20 approximately on that era of your life on what you mostly are interested in.Not 100% just kinda at your core human psyche. Example music, cars, women and sports cards. Im a 71 topps baseball addict, everytime I go to a show if I see some 71`s in a showcase my eyes automatically go to them 1st. Farrah Fawcett and Linda Carter or any 70`s Mustang or Camaro. Some of the people are Bo Jackson or Jeter were there big cards. That`s what is so cool to me when some younger collectors are into vintage. Thank You Jim.

If the goal is to weather a potential storm, anyone who earns their $ on the premise of there being no lockdown mandates, like a yoga studio, restaurant, retail store, etc.. it would make a ton of sense for them to create a sort of personal hedge fund, that includes items like sports cards/collectibles, which happen to sharply increase in value in those times as we found out a few years ago. Almost like Hard Rock Cafe is the perfect storm weathering business model!

Hi Nick, thanks for dropping this. I almost took a loan out against my 401K with an 4.5% rate for a 1948 Leaf Jackie Robinson PSA 4 that was gorgeous. I was willing to cap any future earnings on that $15K to 4.5% while I paid it back and saw it as a win-win.... but my wife made me realize this was more impulse than acquiring a forever card, which I admitted would eventually be upgraded to a PSA 6. We live, we learn. Thanks for the great content!

I own a family business and many of our employees withdraw from their 401K’s every year for normal bills. I always advise against it but I can’t stop them as they are responsible for their own lives. If they came to me to withdraw from their 401k for a sports card? I would say it’s even more of a bad idea. What people (especially young people) don’t realize about the stock market is compound interest. The earlier you invest, the growth long-term is like night and day. I went to Public School and they are so obsessed about teaching subjects pertaining to social issues in our society. Yet they don’t teach people how to manage their money or understanding the stock market.

@@chrisolivo6591 💯 agree. I finally understood compound interest when I heard the story of sand on a chessboard: Put one grain of sand on the first square, 2 on the second, 4 on the third and by the end it’s more sand than the entire mass of earth.

Anyone buying in now as an "investment" is in for a world of fing hurt. You did a video about "bubble". Well we are, but it's on its way down..there is no stopping it so hooray for the collector and "duh" for anyone "investing".

@@fear0 For sure. That’s why my main collection is things like the fully autographed 1986 Fleer set - stuff that in 20 years will absolutely go up in value.

My growing rare 90s Michael Jordan collection is betting against this. Short term I can definitely see them going lower depending on the US fiscal policy, but long term I think MJs value only grows.

@@bpowerspro You didn't raid your 401K to buy the cards though right? If you did the S&P 500 would likely still win over time given the dividends and compounding + tax deferred savings. I'm guessing you just bought it with after tax $ which is perfectly ok - as long as the % of overall portfolio isnt too high.

@@SportCardMadness My comment was in response to the original commenter saying that anyone buying now is making a bad investment. I’m doing it more so because I like the cards but I also think certain cards are stores of value long term (MJ, Brady, Mantle). But to your question, heck no I didn’t take anything from my retirement accounts lol. Actually I picked up a side gig at the beginning of the year to fund my investments (84 star, 86 fleer and the mid-range rare MJ inserts).

@@SportCardMadness I raided my 401K and have made much more money in the hobby than a 401K could ever provide me. I don't let society dictate my life, and I have zero regrets.
