Two years ago, I moved to a three room apartment in a high rise. I had lived in a six room two bath apartment for about 36 years. I had accumulated stuff from my great grandparents, my grandparents, my mother, her two sisters, stuff from my two youngest sons and, of course, myself. I was totally overwhelmed with trying to eliminate stuff. My three sons and daughter-in-law moved more stuff than I actually had space for. Six days after I moved in, I had a heart attack with triple bypass. After I recuperated, I started going through extraneous stuff. I’m still finding things to donate! I was a yarn hoarder and have given 90% of what I had away. I feel freer without all that hanging over my head. I go by the one in, one out rule!

I actually love rage purging, but mainly because the emotion helps give me energy. I'm a naturally low energy person. I also tend to keep things waaay beyond their sell-by date, so to speak. I have mountains of stuff that should have gone away long ago. So rage purging is a good thing for me and I appreciate the impetus while it lasts.

I agree, selling things is time consuming so I no longer mess with Facebook marketplace or eBay. If I do want to declutter nicer items, I either take them to a consignment store or a regular auction house. You get less money but you also get way less stress and spend less time. In the occasional event that something doesn't sell, at that point usually I will just go ahead and donate it

I agree with all of this. I found what works best for me is some sentiment stuff I don't wanna hold onto or throw out I offer it to my sisters so it stays in the family. Guilt is a horrible thing when it comes to clutter so I learned when I pay a lot for something but it no longer brings me joy I think about someone less fortunate that may get it at a thrift store n it brings them joy. I rather it go to a good home at least. That's how I dealt with my guilty clutter. It helped me a lot. Because we change n grow in life n some things I loved before I may not now. I have other loves now instead. I decided in order to enjoy my new loves I have to make room. It may suck hard at times but being able to move around n having a clean n functioning home was more important to my sanity. For me a cluttered home causes a cluttered mind. I knew where things were but had trouble getting to half of it.

Thank you for this video. I am currently dealing with an issue of getting rid of a blanket my bio mom crocheted for me. It's been in a box for years. I was not close to her there's some seriously emotions especially since she died 9 months ago. It a nice blanket it is pretty it's just not my color or design choice. I will give it to the woman's shelter. It will go to good use and I don't need to feel guilty because I have a pitcher of hers on a shelf in my kitchen that is mostly associated with good feelings about her and I do love the pitcher so I dont need to feel guilty getting rid of the blanket.

Ok, I have to admit to decluttering my husband’s college business/accounting textbooks. We carried them through several years of marriage (my hubs was 40 when we married, so long past college and about 10 yrs past his MBA). When I was packing up the third house to downsize to his childhood home as our forever home, I “disappeared” the textbooks. He’s never asked, has no idea they’re gone. They stayed boxed in the attic or basement in every house so I don’t feel even a little bit guilty.

Of the thousands of things I have donated over the past 3 years the things I regret getting rid of....ZERO- I haven't repurchased anything and don't regret parting with anything. We have everything we need.and try to only purchase things that need replaced by either wearing out/changing sizes (clothes/shoes) or that break. We also try to buy second hand before buying new. An uncluttered home is more peaceful!

Love your video, it is so inspiring. Years ago, my youngest sister was clearing out her basement for some reason. She found one accordion with its own case that our dad received from a deceased relative. Well she gave it to me (oldest sibling), which I found needed restoring in a very very bad way. I put into garbage bag and stuck in closet, then start searching for a restoration expert. Yet I didn’t have that accordion long. Youngest sister told younger sister about it, then she told our brother (youngest sibling), who then threw a hissing fit about me having that accordion. He never played it or even learned how. Needless to say, youngest sister had been put into a situation that she was forced to ask for the accordion back. It was sentimental because our dad had taught me to play. I gave it back and bought an accordion for myself. Someday soon, I’m going to play it and download a video for RU-vid.

I have "decluttered" my husbonds expensive leather jacket, with his gold pen, which he received for long and faithful service with his employer. I did not know this, the jacket was in a box, and the pen was in the jacket. He did not know it because he did not wear the jacket at this time of the year. Som weeks after the decluttering we entered a hometown vintage shop. And after a while my husbond suddenly said to me: "This looks a lot like my jacket!!?" He checked the pockets and found the gold pen. "Oh#####, this IS MY GOLD PEN!" I was first shocked!! So sad, and relieved at the same time! Grateful for stepping into this shop. And I bought the jacket with the pen back, vintage price:-) This is more than 10 years back in time. We tell this story when the subject fits., Its a good laugh and a hard learn.

My mom turned all her hangers backwards. After wearing the items, she would place the hangers the correct way, and one year later, any hangers still facing the wrong way goes out of her closet. I moved to this house 5 years ago, and from day one, I'd put stuff on my curb, not in bags sometimes in open boxes. I have people who stop and tell me I give away good stuff. I'm glad someone else is enjoying my items. They now often drive by to see what is out. Generally, it's the weekends that I put stuff out, I figured more people will see the items, and they are gone quicker. The flip side of that is I often end Iup needing something that I've put on the curb, yet I've held onto it for years, thinking I'd used it and never did. It's still good for someone else to enjoy the items.

Just yesterday my daughter told me that someone she knew had gone to Goodwill with their daughter and she walked up and said “Mom, this is my picture”. It turned out to be the a picture she had painted herself and the Mom ended up buying it back, saying it must have been given away accidentally 😂😂😂.

I made a wall hanging one time for a dear family member and was in the Goodwill. It was hanging there. It was heartbreaking, because of the love & time put in it. But, it was a gift. Once given, it is there's. But, I did not make anything like that again for that family member.

Avoid decluttering regret...if you are not sure about somethings put them in a box in the back corner of a closet. After a month or two of you have not gone to pull that item out you are probably safe to get rid of it. When I moved out of my parents house, my mom made sure everything that might possibly be mine was moved as well as several "$1 boxes" my dad had bought at auctions. When I got to my new home I spent months clearing out his junk.

This is why everyone complains about inflation and the economy. People just ‘want, want, want’. They don’t NEED anything. I know a person with a learning disability. That person always reminds me ‘I don’t need new shoes’ or ‘we don’t need to go out, we have plenty of food at home’. People just don’t want to cook, or clean up and reuse a good pair of shoes. People THINK they NEED to buy something, ANYTHING, instant gratification. Well, not anymore. Sorry 99cent stores, sorry Big Lots. People are realizing money needs to be spent on things that are necessary, not needed. Hope that makes sense.

I agree - no more instant gratification!

My biggest mistake was choosing a partner who is a hoarder. Not every mistake is a regret though. 😉 Fortunately, he usually meets me halfway; for example, I wanted to donate a set of 4 canisters and he pulled out 2 of them to keep 'just in case.' If he doesn't use them in a year, I'll ask him again and then it will be more clear that we don't need them.
