Mine went into brumation at 10 months old , they just woke up a few weeks ago. I was told that this was okay. They seem healthy , I haven't found a reptile vet in my area that I can trust , so I thank You for these videos .
My female beardie (well, one of 4 lol), Zephyr, does the "very lite brumation". hers is almost just an extended sleep cycle, it seems. she has a large hide/dig box on the cool side of her enclosure, and usually comes out, or at the very least, perks her head up if she sees me. i offer her some greens in her food dish, and she usually walks out and of her hide and checks out the greens and eats some. some days, she goes right back in, other days she basks for a bit, wanders around her enclosure and/or sits on my desk with me for a bit (like right now). i did just get her in early january. and i'm thinking the trip from California may have triggered a bit of brumation. she had appropriate packing and all that, but still.
My baby is 6, and i have had him 9 months. He is my first reptile, so i was unprepared for brumation because he didn't do it the way i read he would. He went 3 weeks sleeping during the day, getting up at 5, eating a little, basking a little, then went to bed for the night. So I thought he would continue like that, which was great because i saw him every night and could check on him. But then, for 2 days, he dug up his enclosure. Then he went into his hide and stayed. I check him every morning and night to confirm he is breathing. I woke him up after a .month because i was worried about dehydration. He stayed awake for 36 hrs or so, dug up his enclosure again then went to his hide. That was 2 months ago. I still check on him twice a day and sonetimes he'll open an eye for less than 3 seconds. But his wrinkles are getting worse and despite me putting a bowl of water in there everyday, he's never been a bowl drinker. His temps are up to the normall level and i have extended the amount of hours of lights. But he seems determined to stay asleep. I am terrified he will dehydrate or get sick. Plus i am moving in 2 weeks. So i am going to have to either get him into a carrier without waking him or wake him early. Either way he's going to wake up in a new place. I also miss him terribly! 😢
Thanks Elle, I am in the UK and my Beardie brumated in our summer, I though she was ill, but then read they brumate in sympathy wityh the Australian winter, their orinin. Australian winter = UK summer, panick over. I always watch your videos, they are so informative - thank you.
I live in FL and have 2 female bearded dragons and neither one of them brumate, but my house doesn't get colder than 70 in the winter. Still an interesting video to watch. Just curious, what temp is your house in the winter that causes them to brumate? I have no idea about what people keep their heat on up there. In FL, the lowest I've heard is like 68
Hey Elle. Great video!! Do leopard geckos need to go in brumation? My leopard gecko has been in his cave so much this winter. I could not figure out why. I'm wondering if that might be why. Thanks for sharing!!!!
Some do slow down a bit when it gets cold! So earing less and hiding more. As long as they're not losing weight, or doing anything else odd/unusual, they're probably fine 💜
