2 of the most common reasons for the Liquid Metal to start leaking off the APU: - Defective console from the factory - The person who brought the PS5 voided the warranty by getting into the guts of the PS5, removed the heat sink then reinstalled it without the proper mounting pressure and then proceeded to put the console vertically.

Also the area outside the APU has a sponge to absorb any stray LM. It would be extremely unlucky for the LM to soak through to the components underneath. If its leaking liquid metal then I'd say it's a design flaw because there should be enough contact pressure to avoid that entirely. Also they should have put conformal coating around any adjacent IC's or other sensitive parts to allow for overspill when applying the cooler to the die. When we thermal paste a GPU with liquid metal this is precisely what we do to make it safer. I wouldn't use it anyway personally. I did it once and it basically cold welded the cooler to my CPU IHS and I was damn lucky to get it off without damaging the socket or pins. I run my PS5 horizontal anyway cause my TV cabinet fits it nicely that way.

I’m using it vertically because I really don’t like it placed horizontally and furthermore it would occupy too much space. If the company is serious it should replace failed ps5 if they fail for the Liquid Metal issue even out of warranty (I’ve got my MacBook Pro screen replaced for free after 4 years because there was a known issue to the film layer above the display). Btw, let’s hope it will work fine vertically, maybe the people who experienced the problems used them without proper ventilation or for much more hours than me and triggered the problem.. who knows.

Thats a nice idea but not based unfortunately in reality. The red ring of death is a perfect comparison the issue occurred over time due to heat expansion and shrinking during cooling. A liny leak would can take months if not years to leak enough to cause damage but it will happen. Will it affect every PS5 at some point hopefully (and likely) not. Will more come out now there are more outside warranty repair, highly likely. The question is how many and if it's a tolerance issue of manufacture (random cockup) or a design flaw which could lead to a class action lawsuit.
@Spoggi99YT

@@ac1dflare937 While I agree to some extent (especially the last bit), I wouldn’t exactly compare the Red Ring of Death with this issue. RROD was caused by tiny tiny solder balls between the GPU and the interposer expanding and shrinking. First of all, these solder balls are exposed to much higher temperature differences. Secondly, they have way lower tolerances than a liquid metal seal. Either way, let’s hope that this problem is only affecting a few consoles and will not become a widespread issue.

Here’s my take on this… so I bought my 2022 model in December and I’ve been playing it for hours nearly every day running it and keep on checking on how the heat is managing compared to my ps4 pro I traded in for a PS5 disc model at Eb Games (Aus) and huge difference so far is cooling, graphics, ect your basic stuff and so far running it a lot of the time I would’ve had the problem and there would’ve been a recall if it was an entirely huge problem as why would it come around in 2023 unless the 2020 models have been flawed and they’ve been improving on the design of the current model to well improve it as the same with the duel sense as I heard that the 2020 model ones were subjective to issues like stick drift and terrible battery life, ect but companies over time improve their models without us knowing unless we check the model serial numbers, i can understand the liquid metal but it shouldn’t be leaking through when it would be so tight within its chamber to keep it compressed and tight to eliminate the potential on possible issues, I’m no tech geek or anything but I’ve been around enough to know but if the marketing gives you the option to not only put it Vertical or Horizontal especially the years of it being under development with constant testing makes it look like a fear monger or could even be that some of the consoles in the factory would’ve had a small amount of units like 1000 maybe more or less but like I said over time like the 2022 and beyond models will have factory improvements without us really looking into it unless we’re a tech channel who does deep dives into this. I may sound stupid to some or most people but that’s my opinion.

I’d like to know the user case scenario for these console that are having leaking issues. Such as… are they completely stationary and never moved? Are they constantly jostled around and taken to and from location to location? There is a lot of variability here that should be polled and addressed as well.

I have exactly the same space problem with the PS5 in the horizontal position. I've been using the PS5 in the vertical position for 3 years without any problems. Due to the large design and shape, vertical positioning is only possible, but with concerns

I brought my ps5 on launch day and had it vertical for nearly two years. All of a sudden my ps5 started to turn off for no reason. I assumed that the ps5 was overheating due to dust build up. I cleaned it up and continued to use it vertically. This did not help. I was on the verge of sending it back for repair. I watched a similar video and tried using it in the horizontal position. Voila.. problem solved. Definitely a design issue. I recommend the ps5 being used in the horizontal position. I have been using it problem free. Hope it helps others

My brothers PS5 died after a couple of months. But it could have been literally anything. Had it repaired under warranty and was fine but recently has an HDMI issue. Warranty has expired but he should still be protected under UK consumer laws. Could be the cable or TV. Who knows. If you notice your PS5 is making more noise than usual or is overheating and you clean it regularly I would then start to be concerned. If it is running the same as the day you got it it's probably OK.

@ertai222

I think this is just fear mongering. I read the original article and some Reddit posts. My PS5 still works so I wonder how wide spread this is? If it was a huge issue they'd make a statement and do a recall. Class action lawsuits etc. This doesn't fly with graphics cards and people talking about issues. Like with the 4090 cable issue. It was fairly uncommon but people talked about it and Nvidia addressed it. If this PS5 issue was wide spread enough don't you think Sony would make a statement and address it?
@BlueMax109
@BlueMax109 Год назад
Not initially they wouldn't because it would cost them money to acknowledge it. Tend to agree though that it is overblown.
@davidmurphy7332
@davidmurphy7332 Год назад
It could well be overblown and a degree of skepticism is likely appropriate. I've had a PS5 for nearly 2 years permanently in the vertical position and have zero issues, other than sleep mode is just plain broken so I don't use it. However, is this the same Sony that got hacked back in 2011, losing tens of millions of users' personal information, and didn't tell anyone for a week until the press got hold of it? I wouldn't count on them making a statement if the issue was more widespread. Likewise, the early Xbox 360s had a near-50% failure rate and no recall was ever issued for that. So, maybe a little more skepticism towards console manufacturers might be healthy as well ;)

@David Murphy haven't had a problem with it being vertical for two years and have never had an issue using rest mode. I think this is mostly clickbait, both issues. I know several people with PS5'S that use rest mode far more than I do, and they've not had any issues either. I also don't understand where getting a PS5 is difficult in the US. I've seen them in stores more than a handful of times, and someone always has stock online that isn't scalping. I honestly have no idea why it's become so popular to start rumors regarding Sony and the PS5.
@GameslordXY
