If you are nearsighted, you are used to having super vision up close. Why does this matter when you are considering having cataract surgery? Dr. Cathleen McCabe helps you understand your cataract surgery options so that you will be happy after the surgery.

Thank you for the video. So if you have lived near-sighted and want to retain enough nearsightedness to read at normal book distance (e.g. the "Harmon" distance), how do you see at the intermediate distances? i.e. 3ft for the counter, 12ft. for the TV or 15ft for things at that radius ... on out to horizon distance ... can they write you a progressive prescription that goes from say +/- -2 diopters down to 0 at close distance? In other words something similar to progressives with a zero-diopter close point? Are patients who retain some nearsightedness generally happy with that?

Thanks for this video. I am extremely near-sighted (-8, -8) and use close (6") vision frequently, for example, to examine pets for ticks and other conditions. I am facing cataract surgery and because of glaucoma am limited to a monofocal lens. I've watched dozens of videos to try to understand how to cope with my future vision and you are the only person who has explained this limitation clearly, including my surgeon, who did not discuss it at all. I think my first priority would be clear unaided vision at 6", 2nd priority extended clear unaided vision to 2 ft, and then correct other distances with glasses. Is that possible? That would mimic what my vision's been my whole life.

That's easy. A monofocal implant leaving you a -6 will do it.

@@RickACG -6 gives phenomenal near vision without glasses. It's not popular because distance vision will be bad without glasses.

I wore -9.00 glasses before surgery. I got distance monofocal and ended up with 20/20 vision. After about 3 years, I have fully adapted and don't even remember being nearsighted. I wear progressive glasses and have variety of store bought readers. For those times I need super close up I pull out a +3.00 reader. It's almost as good. I can now make a sandwich in the kitchen or fill the hand soap dispenser at 3 am without readers (and no spills).

Do you have astigmatism? I have never found store reading glasses that work at all so I'm concerned about going to distance lenses when I've been nearsighted for 50 years.

I appreciate you trying to convey what it's like to others using real-world terms. Let me ask a couple of questions: 1) After surgery, at 20/20 in both eyes, you where progressives. This is to give you clear vision at multiple distances. For you, the top of the progressive lens is essentially a no-prescription clear area through which you see distance, with progressive magnification (like a reader) as you look through lower regions of the lens. Is all of that correct? When you describe filling the soap or make a sandwhich at 3am you're working at arms-length. Do you need your progressives to do that or see that, or does traditional correction for long distance leave that arm's length distance clear ... or maybe just "clear enough?" Thanks for any insight you can give. Drs. aren't very good at explaining the actual performance after surgery. My guess is that they are afraid of getting sued over descriptions they gave ahead of time. Regardless of that, it is helpful to get descriptions from people who have been through it.

me too.i'm also very near sighted.and I too have dry eyes.though i'm yet to have any surgeries.I have heard that if you're eyes are dry they won't do the surgery till they aren't dry...maybe it's a matter of degree?just a little it ok,but alot is not...anyway i'm glad it's possible to have it done sometimes.I hope you have excellent vision.

Hello Mam. Please tell me that which IOL would be best for a one eyed person who is having Retinitis Pigmentosa and night blindness;in cataract surgery? Does Tecnis Symphony work well in Retinitis Pigmentosa patient who is Near Sighted?

Question from a fellow professional from India about to undergo cataract surgery on one (R) eye: given that my other (L) eye has mild cataract -- 20/20 after correction for 3D Sph myopia plus 1 D for index myopia -- what would the ideal monofocal IOL choice be for my right eye if I spend most of my time indoors reading and listening to podcasts on my cell phone (can read the smallest print up close unaided) WITHOUT CAUSING post-op ANISOMETROPIA & dizziness, diplopia etc? I intend to put off surgery on the other eye till early 2025 unless the cataract progresses dramatically. Thanks and warm regards.

Great explanation on my superpower and how I take advantage of my severe nearsightedness by taking off my progressive glasses to read. This is a good warning to prepare myself, and I think I will go for the cheaper reading glasses and adjust to not having my superpower that you describe. I would still like some better advice on what to do in between the two cataract surgeries, since I can't see to get around the house without tripping, everything is a struggle without a pair of glasses on. Is dealing with impaired vision, wearing one contact, one eye closed, for 3 weeks the only options available for the interim period? I hope my one cataract doesn't have complications. I think that's the period I need to prepare myself for rather than not having the ability to put my phone 4 in from my face and have my superpower of magnification.

I chose the distant vision implants for both eyes. My distant vision is now a blurry 20/60, but my reading vision is so good, I can read even the tiniest print for the first time in 30 years without glasses. How can this be explained?

I'm not that worried about becoming far sighted.I am very nearsighted and can barely see close up.really pretty much everything without my glasses is a blur.It will be no great loss.apparently i'm too near sighted to have that superpower.

Does this mean that even if you choose a monofocal lens to retain your near vision it still won’t be as good as it used to be before surgery? Thank you
@TheeyeassociatesWB
@TheeyeassociatesWB 4 года назад
It is really according to how nearsighted you are. What I can say is that if you do not get an upgraded multifocal lens, you will always have to wear reading glasses when you want to read. No more taking off your glasses to read. Try this. Try reading through the top of your glasses. That will simulate how our vision would be with a monofocal lens.

Without your current lenses, your close up is much stronger power. Ex: -4.00 dist, would equate to a + 4,00 close. Now after cataract surgery your distance corrected lens would be about -1,00, but + 4,00 would be too much disparity for the brain. Thus reading glasses nay be helpful for tiny objects. Also a lower plus implant for close up would give more focal range, making computer or arm length activities easier. It’s a tough balance.

Bid decision. I am near sighted so I don't need glasses to text or look at emails on my phone. I didn't really get much explanation from my dr. I am only having one eye done for now and kind of want distance but I wear glasses to drive already which I don't mind . I really don't want to wear glasses all the time . I am having night vision problems with my left eye or I would not have surgery . Now I don't know what to do.
