It's the whole transition of emotions that takes place. First knock you see him stiffen in place. Second, he is either swallowing and/or gritting his teeth. Third, his eyes are darting to the door and holding as the sound of that knock's echo fades before focusing on Cage. Mean you can see those same emotions transitioning as Cage is doing his monologue leading up to this moment, but it's in the span of 2-3 seconds you can see the range of emotions of shock, denial, and defeat. And the look Cage gives him when he furrows his brow as saying believe me now. And the look Hawke has after that realizing that even though he won, he had lost. And that last jab he gave him at the end was also him seeing just utterly broken Yuri truly was and how broken the world really is to want to keep someone like him around.

Matchstick Men was pretty good.
@hfar_in_the_sky
@hfar_in_the_sky 2 года назад
One of the many interesting things about this scene is how really, they're both broken men in the end. Yuri because the people he cares about are either dead or have left him. And even though it's clear that he no longer loves this business, it's all he has left. The only reason he's allowed to go free is because his skills are useful. And Valentine because the "justice" he so firmly believed in winds up being a farce. The man he spent years hunting down will go free because the powers that be are less interested in justice for the dead than they are in having a convenient weapon to use against their enemies. And for a moment, not only did Yuri understand Valentine but I think Valentine truly understood Yuri. And that's why Valentine said, "I would tell you to go to hell, but I think you're already there." He knew that at this point, Yuri's worst punishment is living with who he is. And that's perhaps the great capstone of Yuri's story: in the end, after everyone is dead and gone, the one person left who understands Yuri the best is the man who hates him the most.

Ethan Hawke really sells the crushing feeling he gets with just a simple facial expression - the look of pain after Yuri tells him what is about to *really* happen, and that in this world the good guys like Valentine finish last most of the time, the very fast realization that they're actually personally quite alike, and the realization that Yuri has been in his own private prison in his mind for a while.

He could have have just let him die in Africa. It wouldn't have been hard. He KNEW it would have stopped Yuri 100%. Instead he let him go, knowing there was a high probability he'd make MORE sales BEFORE he could even ATTEMPT to catch him again. Valentine DESERVED to have this experience. To see his so called "Justice" FAIL. We don't have Systemic Justice in America. A rich person can hire a team of lawyers to get away or get a slap on the wrist. 2:34 "...and while the biggest arms dealer in the world is your boss, the president of the United States, who ships more merchandise in a day that I do in a year..." For me, this is the very core of all this movie. The hypocrisy of a system rigged from the top, where that very top can be designing and committing war crimes left and right while at the same time be condemning either scapegoats (like this smaller private arms dealer) or point at other countries (Russia for example). The very quote at the end of the movie: the main arms dealers in the world are the U.S., U.K., Russia, France and China... which coincidentally are the five members of the U.N. Security Council and are the ones that can veto any act of war or peace in spite of what the rest of the world wants and demands.

"I would tell you to go to hell, but you're already there." It was literally the only comeback he had, cause deep down as Yuri spelled it out for him, he knew he was right. This was one of Nic Cage's best movies in my mind post Face/Off and Con Air. He played a gun running villain who was despicable but not in the 'he deserves to lose' kind of way. But more in the 'I get why he's doing it and actually wished he got to keep going' kind of way. Sadly for him, his brother's conscience cost him his life on the deal that inevitably got him pinched upon reentry into the country. His wife following him to his storage container was the true clincher. Yet he proved to be serviceable enough to where he was worth saving by those with enough pull to do it.

The lighting and photography of the scene are both simple and beautiful. There are at least three purposes behind it. 1 : The colors used, cold blue and bright orange, are almost complementary, and they work well to bring some texture and contrast in the image. 2 : The left side represents the past, and the right side is the future. Yuri's face is black and blue on the left side of the screen, while the right side is bright orange. His past is cold and dark, yet his future is assured. On the opposite side, the fbi agent has a bright past that leads to a dead end : Yuri's going to be released, and he can't do anything about that. 3 : This opposition in the lighting of the characters also serves to show who's the real dominant here. Back it up with the difference in movements, calm on one side, almost erratic on the other, and you understand almost immediately that Yuri has a plan and will get out victorious of this confrontation. Now, all of that, is in full paradoxe with what the characters are saying : Yuri is clearly the vilain, by his own words, the fbi agent is a "good guy" with morally good intentions. But at the same time, we hear them expose this reality about them, we are shown, visually, using light and color that the ending of the scene will be unjust. And that paradoxe between what is shown and what is tell, creates the very momentum of the scene. It's nothing revolutionary or uncommon in cinema, but it's very well done.

The reason his wife had such a dislike of guns and especially black arms deal is because her father was in charge of payroll at the construction site he worked at. So criminals armed with illegal guns broke into her home when she was a child and killed her parents in order to get the money that her father was in charge of.

In the director’s cut, there is a line they left out on this version when Valentine stares into Yuri’s eyes after a good 5 seconds of tense silence when the door knock is heard, and then he tells him, “now I get it, it’s you. You are the Lord of War” and the credits roll. I can see why this is the more popular version though.
