Two videos in one! I talk about what I think is necessary to gentle a mustang for the first time... Facility requirements and knowledge requirements! Then I take you on an adventure to pick up my 2022 Texas Extreme Mustang Makeover horse. Camille and Ellen talk about how someone could be prepared to gentle a mustang. At the end you get to meet my new mustang!

You getting a little gelding is for some reason the funniest thing, I’m so used to you getting mares for the makeovers 😂 (and I feel like all your most recent makeover horses where all on the chunkier side as well 🤣) love how informative the video was especially for people interested in training a mustang in the future! 💞

I truly want to do a makeover someday. This gives me much inspiration. Taking them off their malnourished and “wild” lifestyle gives them many opportunities and trust!!

You are so right about not knowing if you’re ready and asking for help. I am training mine at a trainers place and he jumps in every once in a while and gives me tips, let’s me know if I can push a little more or less, and it’s just great to have someone there if you get stuck. My mustang so far has taught me to really listen and I am one that I worry about pushing the horse too far so I’m learning how much pressure I can apply without pushing too far. But we are moving right along and no big blow ups so far so I ‘d say we’re doing pretty good!

This might just be the best mustang video I've devoured - incredibly informative - popped up just when I needed it most. I'm in mid-gentling feeling great pressure about hooves getting longer and I'm still so far from getting them trimmed. Thank you, Sam, for sharing. I've got a boost to keep going.

I had only owned a miniature horse (quite the spitfire!), who I completely trained, before I rescued my first mustang. I did a lot of research, spent time around other people's mustangs, asked questions, and watched so many different training videos. I definitely feel like I was very prepared. His training has gone slower since he's my first and not under a timed event! He's a 15hh, 12yo, bay gelding who was unfortunately removed from the Onaqui Mountains last year.

Thank you for doing this video and good luck in the EMM! We adopted two of the Onaqui mares from the December IA. My husband’s horse, TIP trained super easily. She’s 3 and pregnant with her second foal. Super chill and sweet. My horse, almost 5 and expecting her first foal. She’s reactive and hesitant but a thinker. She was with my friend who is also a TIP trainer for the month the other one was being gentled due to some technical difficulties at my place. So mine was worked with some but she is still not allowing touches past her neck at 1 1/2 months after being picked up from holding. Our first day I ended up in a bad position and got run over. Nice hoof print bruise on my face. She didn’t try to trample me or even step on me. I was able to get up right away and determine that nothing seemed broken. A couple minutes later, she took hay from my hand. I also ended up with a hoof print bruise on my thigh from a side kick because I ended up on her sensitive side and not in a safe position. I certainly learned my lesson. Now I can walk past her on any side and she doesn’t lash out. She stays calm and I feel like it’s such a big win. She gets food aggressive sometimes and she stomps her hoof and her ears go back if we are not in protected contact. She’s fine with a hay net but not with it in your hand if that makes sense. I learned that you’re never really ready to gentle a mustang the first time around. I have my friend who can advise me so that makes me feel better. It was a rough start for me but fortunately my horse doesn’t hold that against me.

Training a "barn" raised horse is a different level than "training" a Mustang. Mustangs are afraid.....tougher to "gentle"....before the training can start. Quite a challenger to take on a Mustang! I love watching.....waiting for that special point where the trust starts!

I think it is very important to realize how different these mustangs are from domestic horses regarding training and trust in humans. Some have PTSD due to capture, branding, gelding, shots or like mine who got adopted and then returned to the BLM with an ingrown halter and a nasty bolting habit (when leading). For me building trust is the key to success. I feel some people think because these horses cost only $ 25 to adopt they are not worth much and if their methods don't work out they'll just return them to the BLM or send them to the auction (once they have the title). I find the training process very humbling because like Sam said so wisely, these mustangs mirror back to you the things you need to work on on yourself.

Love this video :) based on what you said I'm ready except for having a BLM approved place to train. So I'll just have to wait until I have a house of my own (whenever that is) and don't have to pay crazy amounts for boarding.

Definitely make sure you're ready...last year I purchased a mustang who was initially gentled by folks who adopted her on a whim. While they did some stuff right they had no plan for her and I'm cleaning up a bunch of issues as a result. It's totally not fair to the horse to do the job half-assed!

He is adorable! Did you say where he was from? If I didn't have my mustang already, your new guy would be exactly what I'm looking for. Wary and afraid, but not terrified, short, stocky, and a GREAT ground covering trot. Have fun!

I am glad you covered this question! Before I adopted my first Mustang, I had some trouble knowing if I was ready. Out of curiosity and to learn more, why did you get a halter and drag rope on him this time?

I recognize some of the BLM crew as well as my favorite mustang, the huge sorrel w/blaze, Bob(?), the 16.2 hand mustang working the alleys with the BLM rider. (Yes, a 16.2 hand mustang. True story!)

I don't think that you can stress enough what is required to do this properly without turning the horse into a three strike loser. So bummed that my internet gave me problems and I missed the "live" on the fb group. Thanks for letting us take the journey with you!

For someone who wants to gentle a mustang but knows they aren't ready yet, what do you recommend? Do you think its good to train one or multiple human-raised horses before ever attempting a mustang, or do you think someone could be successful having their first self-trained horse be feral? I'd love to gentle a mustang someday (maybe even get into the makeover competitions) but I know for certain I'm not ready yet. Horseman of 3 years, horseowner of 1, with little real horsetraining experience and novice-intermediate groundwork skills. I want to acquire more skill, but am not really sure how to go about that when both my animals are fully broke, so advice/ideas from those more experienced than I would be appreciated!

as someone with around 10 or 11 years of experience working with horses (though admittedly only got into training within the past few years so take this with a grain of salt!) I would say one of the most important things to do before getting into training horses feral or not is to make sure that you yourself are "trained"/well versed. since you already have a fully broke horse, that could look something like learning liberty work with your horse so you can start to get a sense of what it feels like to communicate effectively with a horse. plus, even though your horse is already broke, you might still find they pick up some new skills too! I should also note here that if you want to do any training on horseback to make sure you have a really solid skill level with riding so you can handle the many bumps and bucks that come with horse training. next step would be to find some place where you could start working with training young/green horses. I think the best bet for this would be to start volunteering with a horse rescue cause there you will be working with a LOT of untrained horses, but (hopefully) with the supervision and guidance of a professional or practiced trainer. if there's none in your area though, you could try looking for opportunities to volunteer or work at any other place involved with horse training (breeding stables, riding stables, maybe even the right equine vet). just remember that you don't have to single-handedly be buying and training horses to get experience! beyond that I think it's just a matter of practice and patience, though personally I'm still on that second step so time will tell if there's more beyond that haha. I know I'm always having to convince myself out of adopting some project horse or Chincoteague pony to train, but I just have to remind myself that I'll get to that point in time, and there's no need to rush the process. hopefully this helps a bit, but good luck with your training journey wherever it takes you!
