There are 2 different aac 77gr loads. A black box that uses factory Sierra 77 gr bullets. And a blue box that uses aac produced 77 gr bullets. The two loads are not the same and the Sierra bullets are significantly higher quality. The rounds sent to various RU-vidrs for marketing have all been the Sierra load. Do with that information what you will.

I've probably shot 500 of each of AAC's 77 grainers, their OTM's and the SMK's. I've found they were both shooting about the same size groups at 100. Roughly .8-.9 out of my criterion core barrel. But the SMK's have a better ES/SD and is much better at longer distance. @@husky701rider9

For me the biggest factors I look at is standard deviation and ballistic coefficient more than anything to determine what grain weight to go with.

SD has nothing to do with what grain bullet you pick. Low SDs are all about brass quality, powder charge accuracy, neck tension and seating depth.

Good stuff, Jim. Based on the comments I'm reading this AM, it might be good to mention the role of hand loading. I see a lot of comments suggesting people are trying, through commercially available loads, to find what's "best." And "best" for any barrel is the load worked up for that barrel. Commercial loads are more expensive as their SD/ES improves, and when they're really good they're around $2/rd or higher. You can reload for less than $2/rd and create loads as good as those $2/rd commercials. Comments suggest people are trying to buy consistency & accuracy, and nerding out on what rounds are good for OTHERS. What works great in someone else's barrel may not be great in yours or mine. Might be good to remind folks that all the fundamentals behind breaking the shot, and staying consistent, will do much more for accuracy than spending $2.25/rd for Black Hills etc. and then wasting the ammo's capability with bad fundamentals, poorly tuned gun, poorly chosen barrel. No matter how good a round is, it's only as good as the rifle and shooter sending it downrange.

With reports of the AAC in house bullets shedding jackets into supressors with less than acceptable regularity, maybe stick to the AAC with brand name projectiles. AAC 77g SMK was 18sd for me over 20shots, and matched IMI Razor Core avg velocity. It's a great round.

How will you determine terminal ballistics?
@jimmybrodriguez
@jimmybrodriguez 10 месяцев назад
I won't determine terminal ballistics. As I mentioned that is determined largely by bullet type and velocity. If you are looking for specific terminal ballistics reverse engineer it: choose a bullet that gives you the performance you are looking, get a barrel that will provide the necessary velocity to achieve it, tune the gassing as needed.
@thepracticalrifleman

Would be interesting to see 5.56 loads optimized for SBR or 16 inch and under AR’s. Having a new 14.5 inch 1:7 rifle I’ve found that I consistently get really poor accuracy (2-4 MOA) with lighter 55gr or 62gr loads, where the sweet spot is 69-75gr loads. Though I have heard that lighter bullets with the aforementioned “optimized” powder loads close the accuracy gap.
@seanoneil277
@seanoneil277 10 месяцев назад
1:7 wants a heavier projectile, 55gr is better for 1:10 (original twist was 1:10 or 1:11) and better in 1:8 than in 1:7.
@jimmybrodriguez
@jimmybrodriguez 10 месяцев назад
There aren't a ton of SBR optimized rounds, but I'll see if we can test them. That would be a separate test in and of itself. Your 1:7 barrel is going to perform better with heavier grains and as you noted, the issue with most 55gr is the inconsistency in loads. As I mentioned, it's all about finding balance and determining what you are trying to achieve, then select ammo as needed.

Hodge aka fn barrels aren't a good choice for this
@jimmybrodriguez
@jimmybrodriguez 10 месяцев назад
Yes, FN does make a lot of the chrome lined barrel blanks on the market. In my testing, I've found the Hodge profile of the FN barrel and gas port produce a better shooting gun than many other options. While I normally shoot stainless barrels, the Hodge has consistently shot .5-.7 moa 10 round groups and better represents what most people have in their guns so I don't feel it will be a limiting factor in this test. Additionally, the chrome lined barrel will stand up long term better to this testing vs the stainless barrels so that results will have one less variable.

How did you think you shouldn't touch on grain weight?
@jimmybrodriguez
@jimmybrodriguez 10 месяцев назад
Grain weight is a slightly more complex topic that I feel deserves its own video or mention in a later video. Grain weight needs specific barrel twist rates, and affects velocity, BC, terminal ballistics. As mentioned, this was intended to be a brief overview and I didn't feel this was the time to engage in that conversation.
