Are you starting the golf swing correctly? What REALLY starts the golf swing? (is it your arms? your hands? your shoulders? your chest?) This golf tip will help you to understand how to best start the golf swing for you. Since you can't overlook how important the first move of the golf swing is, you need to have a solid foundation at the beginning of your golf swing. This is one of the best ways to start the golf swing and hit the golf ball solid.

I am Tom Saguto, PGA Member and founder of SagutoGolf. Thank you for visiting my instructional page where you can find how to get on the fast track to improving your golfing abilities. Whether you are a seasoned golfing veteran looking for a quick swing tune-up after an on-course emergency, or a beginner just looking to get the most out of your golfing experience, I am here to help you achieve your golfing goals.
My mission as your swing doctor is simple, to help you maximize your enjoyment in game of golf. Because, let’s face it, golf is a hard game.
My philosophy is wholly based on the student having a fun, meaningful experience in a frustrating and complicated game where potential lifelong golfers either quit because it is too difficult or that they experience some form of swing-related pain or discomfort. I mitigate these problems by focusing entirely on the student’s needs and goals while teaching a golf swing method that ultimately takes stress off of the common pain areas of the swing.

I've been watching Saguto golf. I've never commented on a site like this before. This site has completely transformed my golf experience. I've been a 20 to 23 handicap my entire life shooting 95 to 105. I'm now shooting between 80 and 85 in just one month. I've gone from a 23 handicap to an 17 in just one month. Awesome. Simply the best instruction. Thanks Tom!!!

Warning for long but worthy read. 20 years ago( late teens) I was shooting low 80's, and was self taught using the complete golf instruction manual(2001) from Steve newell. A bad marriage and not much golf over the past 20 years(maybe 10 rounds) had me shooting an average of 115. I have begun actively trying to get back into golf since last year and was straight up sucking badly. I've been watching all of the youtube guys since last year with zero improvement to my game. Reverse k this, turn your back that, etc... Then I came across Tom's work about a week ago. The very first video I watched triggered something in my memory from how I played 20 years ago, and I have been hooked since. Now mind you, I have played probably 7 rounds this spring. My very first round was a legit 95. Every other round was between 110-120, Last Friday, I shot eighteen and hit pretty close to that 120 stroke mark. Wednesday, after watching numerous videos from Tom, I played 18 and shot a 57 on the front 9 while beginning to put Tom's methods to work. The first 5 holes destroyed me. Then it slowly began to click. I ended up shooting a 44 on the back 9 to finish with 101. Today I just played 18. 46 on the front nine and 45 on the back 9 with 7 legit pars for a round of 91. I fell apart on two par 4 holes for an added 7 strokes. Literally 1 week of beginning to change my swing with Tom's stack and tilt routine, and starting from scratch as if I've never golfed before, and I have shaved 20 strokes off my round. I am a paid member of his online golf school since Monday, and would encourage everyone that truly wants to play a better brand of golf to get with this program and watch what it will do to your game. Again, I am only a week into watching his videos, and doing nothing but trying it on the course with no range time. Had I not fallen apart on 2 holes today, I would have shot my first round in the mid 80's since I was 20 years old. I have much work to do to get this swing engrained into habit. I have much work to do on every aspect of my game, including a much needed overhaul of my short game(2-3 putts galore). But I will break 80 by August if not sooner, and will shoot a par round by the end of this year. And I promise you that when I do, it will be from learning from Tom Saguto. If you love golf but are inconsistent, I recommend that you become a member of Tom's paid course. Pretend you are completely new to golf and kill your old swing and mindset as fast as possible. Us inconsistent golfers always say there is that one shot on the course today that keeps me coming back for more. Whether it be a perfect 300 yard bomb off the tee, a beautiful short iron approach into a gimmie putt, or a long birdie or eagle putt that finds the bottom of the cup. Well today, I had dozens of those shots. Smashed tee shots, beautiful approach shots, and a few long albeit par putts that found the bottom of the cup. My consistency today was quite remarkable, and I truly owe it to what I am learning from Tom. To Tom: Thank you for your honesty and straight forward teaching methods, and for being beyond reasonable in your pricing. I appreciate you very much and wish you massive success in all you do!

I'm glad this lesson resonated well with you, Michael! The takeaway certainly can and has been an overly complicated by "mainstream" golf swing instruction. Don't get me wrong, as it is a hugely important component in getting our swing motion off to a proper start; however, this does not mean it has to be a confusing or difficult one. Thanks, as always, for your kind words and support! Tom

Everybody tilts. No Tilt, no proper plane. Ben Hogan described and pictured it in his five lessons book ( look at the pictures). I switched to stack&tilt with Tom's online school and i hit my irons (mizuno blades) pure and clean every single time. It took me some time to stop shifting my weight and the other bad habits like high hands and release. Today i hit a 39 on 9 holes. Nothing feels as goog as knowing you hit a solid shot every single time. Then you start to think about the other variables like wind, elevation etc. But not whether you hit it solid or not. Stack&tilt is so simple meaning you can take many variables out of the equasion (shift, lift, shift back, release etc.) Just start stacked with your weight left and stay like that( rh). Great work Tom!

My suggestions: 1) Join my online school for just $10 US/month or $99/year - it's where the best opportunity for learning resides. You'll find more information here: saguto.golf/p/golf-swing-simplified-tom-saguto-pga. 2) Purchase a copy of the Stack and Tilt book as an excellent reference guide for the online school. 3) Schedule a V1 Swing Video Analysis - an effective and inexpensive service that I highly recommend to everyone in the school. This enables me to put my eyes on your swing and offer some very specific observations and corrective action plans if applicable. I liken it to bringing your swing into the shop for a tune-up or minor repair. Scheduling one on a quarterly basis for preventive maintenance will do wonders for keeping things humming along nicely, and it's also a great tool for pinpointing and resolving any issues that arise. Then, the Force shall be with you.....😂

Tom, first off thanks for all the great instructionals. As I work on my conversion to S&T, I’ve found that any and all former swing triggers I’ve used were all geared towards bumping off the front/left side to get to the back/right side. Obviously this is not good for S&T swings. Can you possibly suggest swing trigger(s) that promote the S&T mechanics? Thank you in advance.
@SagutoGolf
@SagutoGolf 9 месяцев назад
Hi Dana, I'm glad to know that my instruction is resonating with you! In S&T we start with our weight forward (generally 55/45 for the short and mid irons, 60/40 for the longer clubs). We achieve this by addressing the ball "stacked", shoulders over hips over knees with our weight balanced 50/50. We then simply bump our hips 1" towards the target while keeping everything else in place. That presets a little more weight forward while retaining the stacked relationship. During the swing we gradually add more forward weight load into the transition (70/30), 80/20 halfway down, 90/10 impact, and 95/5 finish. The upper torso/head - and thus the swing center - remains in place during the increasing forward weight load in the downswing. There's no "weight shift"; instead, it's just a gradually increasing load onto the lead side. And the result is a centered, low-maintenance, body-friendly, consistent, and tremendously powerful swing. With regard to swing triggers, mine tend to change quite regularly as I'm always thinking about new possibilities for my lesson content. (Although as long as my setup is good and I've pre-established the necessary connections, I can trust that no matter my "trigger du jour", it's going to get me moving properly into the takeaway and backswing.) This is why I do my best to convey multiple feels or thoughts throughout the swing wherever possible. We're all different physiologically and psychologically, and something that resonates effectively with one golfer may not necessarily work for another. However, no matter the variety of suggested feels/thoughts offered for a particular element of the swing, they are all directed at getting different golfers to achieve the desired positions, motions, and ball striking results. For a good starting point to developing your own feels and triggers, I recommend that you check out my FREE mini course “The Top 3 Things You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker”: go.saguto.golf/ It's a great way to gain a fundamental understanding of this system as well as an introduction to the instruction style that has thousands of men and women from across the globe - including many seasoned, low-handicap, competitive players and spanning all age ranges from junior to super-senior - enjoying the best golf of their lives: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews Embrace the process and have fun out there!! @SagutoGolf
@SagutoGolf 3 года назад
It’s really the same swing with every club in your bag. Just some minor setup differences and naturally occurring shaft plane changes as we graduate up in club length from short irons to woods. Also, the progressively widening stance as we move through the longer clubs necessitates that the hips travel a greater distance laterally in the downswing, because if the hips stop their lateral slide towards the target prior to impact their rotation takes over, changing the low point and rerouting the club across the ball, thereby causing an out-to-in glancing blow and producing a variety of undesirable results including fat and thin contact, topped shots and popups, straight pulls, and “banana” slices. It is oftentimes the reason some golfers will experience early success with the short irons but struggle a bit with the longer clubs. In this regard there are troubleshooting lessons and drills in my online school that are designed to specifically address and resolve these issues (in addition to the structured learning platform for the entire swing and much, much more). At just $10 US/month or $99 US/year it is perhaps the best PGA golf instruction deal out there. Here's a link if you'd like more info: saguto.golf/p/golf-swing-simplified-tom-saguto-pga Cheers, Tom

I agree with others here. Your presentations are not only informative, and they are also entertaining. I have definitely improved from your lessons and I thank you for that. Regarding "tilt", I find your description to be a bit misleading, certainly not intentional, but it implies that an actual move to tilt one's shoulders is necessary. It really isn't, it happens automatically. As I am sure you would agree, the point that you are making is to maintain your spine angle and rotate about it throughout the swing. If you do that your shoulders will tilt. I saw a helpful illustration regarding this in a golf magazine many years ago. It was a pencil sketch of a golfer at address. What was different in this sketch was that a screw was superimposed on the golfer. it entered the top of his head, down his spine, and out his rear end into the ground. The screw prevents any movement except rotation about the spine. The screw stops the ability to move up or down, right or left. To this day I think about that screw every time I swing a golf club. Thanks again, Tom.
@SagutoGolf
@SagutoGolf 3 года назад
Hi Brian, No misleading going on here! In terms of what actually happens in a properly executed swing, you are indeed tilting while turning the shoulders and extending the spine. It is the combination of these three motions that keeps the relationship to the ground intact on the backswing. There can certainly be different ways of "feeling" it, but this is what the body is doing. Here are a couple of tilt-related channel videos: - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1aWTy3qjB_I.html - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-nyBBvhvnU44.html Think about it this way. If you tilt toward the target while keeping your head in place you will introduce the other components of turning and extending to put your body in the perfect backswing position with your shoulder oriented downward towards the ball. To get a feel for the coordinating of these elements we can reverse engineer it like this: Without a club in your hands rest the top of your forehead against a wall to keep it in place. Without allowing your head to move execute the forward side tilting motion and watch what happens. Magically your lead shoulder has turned downward and your spine has extended!! Here's another way to go about it: 1) Get into your setup posture 2) Stand up straight (extend) 3) While standing erect (extended) tilt your upper body towards the target, keeping your hips in place. (In other words, if you are right-handed, stand up straight and tilt your torso to the left like it's the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Vice versa obviously for lefties.) 4) Now that you are extended and tilted, turn your upper body as you would in your backswing, keeping your weight forward while allowing your hips to turn 45 degrees and your trail leg to straighten. There you have your backswing - tilted, turned, and extended!! Cheers! Tom
@BanBb1
@BanBb1 3 года назад
@@SagutoGolf Thank you for your response, Tom. Actually, that was my point. If you manage to keep your spine in place in relation to the ball and rotate about it, while keeping your left arm straight and tight to your body, the tilt is automatic. I believe we are saying the same thing, just using different swing thoughts. Thanks again.

@SagutoGolf
@SagutoGolf 3 года назад
I know it sounds like a strange concept to those who have only ever subscribed to a swing model that is based on shifting weight from back to front, but I assure you that this swing is anything but a reverse pivot! You start with your weight forward (55/45 on the front side; 60/40 for the longer clubs), increase that same weight forward to the top of the backswing (70/30), and further increase the forward weight during the downswing from halfway down (80/20) through impact (90/10) and to the finish at 95/5 forward. There's no "weight shift", therefore - unless one were to fall backwards - there's nothing to reverse or pivot!! And the result is a centered, low-maintenance, body-friendly, consistent, and tremendously powerful swing! Cheers! Tom PS: By the way, have you considered enrolling in the SagutoGolf online school? I was thinking of something yesterday about how many videos don't show angles of the clubface at address. It would be a really helpful video for most. Maybe setup one in front, one to side, and one from your perspective. It's something so many of my friends and fellow golfers struggle with. What they think is square to the ball is super open or closed. Do it with irons first though. That's the biggy. No one... and I mean no one covers it on youtube that i've found. They show the back of the club, but not the front, or the angle of which the club is sitting to the ball. Birds eye view is prob the best way to get it across.
@alanduncan9204
@alanduncan9204 3 года назад
When you look down at the club behind the ball - the grooves should point 90 degrees to target line. The very leading sharp edge of the iron is the actual bottom of the club - If the gooves are 90 degrees it follows the leading edge is 90 degrees. Do not attempt to line up using the top edge of the club. Learn the correct grip - it should be what is considered just a little "strong" like Tom Saguto's. His system produces a draw flight. Like Tom said Arnold Palmer turned / tilted and aimed his left shoulder at the ball. It works. It works for me coz I shoot in the 70's. Another tip is do not hurry the back swing all the speed should be saved for the downswing hitting the ball.

@Johnny Nonny & @ Alan Duncan - This level of detail is included in my online school for the tune of a whopping $10/month. In fact, I just added an entire course on the Stack & Tilt Shot Shaping Grid. I consider this information a must for any more advanced player who is truly seeking to elevate his or her game. BTW, for clarification purposes, it is rare that we will set up with the face 90 degrees to the target line. For the stock push-draw shot shape that this swing produces, the face is actually open to the target line and closed to the path. Clubface relative to target line dictates the ball's starting line, and face relative to path determines direction and degree of curvature. Tom

I understand the tilt aspect. So, what is your "feel" of what starts your swing? Thanks.
@SagutoGolf
@SagutoGolf 2 года назад
My own personal "feels" are not relevant to you, Tommy, because they are unique to me. Beyond that, they change regularly - sometimes it's the lead arm, sometimes it's the trail arm, other times it's both arms, and even others it's no arms and just shoulders or chest or hips... 😆 This is why I do my best to convey multiple feels or thoughts throughout the swing wherever possible. We're all different physiologically and psychologically, and something that resonates effectively with one golfer may not necessarily work for another. However, no matter the variety of suggested feels/thoughts offered for a particular element of the swing, they are all directed at getting different golfers to achieve the same desired positions, motions, and ball striking results. This is one reason why the comprehensive, structured, sequential learning platform of my online school is so effective, and why so many folks across the globe are now enjoying the best golf of their lives as a result. The lessons and drills provide the guidelines and set the boundaries, while providing ample leeway for each individual golfer to infuse and exercise their own uniqueness. So Tom, when we tilt we still have 55% weight on our front side? Or does the tilt do it for us?
@SagutoGolf
@SagutoGolf 3 года назад
Hi Marc, Here is a channel video specific to the tilt: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-nyBBvhvnU44.html You start with your weight forward (55/45 on the front side; 60/40 for the longer clubs), increase that same weight forward to the top of the backswing (70/30), and further increase the forward weight during the downswing from halfway down (80/20) through impact (90/10) and to the finish at 95/5 forward. This is accomplished by the combined motions of tilting, turning, and extending as we bring the hands and club deep on concentric inward paths. The result is a centered, low-maintenance, body-friendly, consistent, and tremendously powerful swing! It is important to understand that the videos, lessons, and drills on this free channel - while fully aligned with the swing method I teach - address a variety of topics, issues, feels, and/or common flaws/fixes from one episode to the next. They are certainly not intended to be taken as a sequential learning platform like the structured curriculum of my online school, which I strongly recommend to anyone who truly wishes to get on the proper path towards owning this swing. For just $10 US/month or $99 US/year you'll have unlimited access to a comprehensive members-only system for the full swing, the short game, and much more. The school's intuitive course layout greatly simplifies the entire process through succinct, step-by-step videos, and I'm regularly adding new content. No clue, Logan. All I can say is that this is an extremely body-friendly motion, so if a golfer is experiencing more than just some occasional minor muscle soreness there is typically something amiss in the setup and/or motion. Do you try to keep the club face directly behind the ball for the first 2 feet coming back
@SagutoGolf
@SagutoGolf 2 года назад
We are swinging on an inclined circle, Rick, so in considering that we then know that the concentric hand and club paths will naturally work slightly to the inside by keeping the arms straight, the upper arm connections intact, and the hands quiet. Too much to the inside or too straight back are contrived actions, neither of which are desirable in this swing system. This lesson video may aid in your understanding of this: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-WxDD63quyk8.html And here's a link to my FREE mini-course “The Top 3 Things You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker” in case you’re interested in learning about the swing in a more structured manner: go.saguto.golf/ Tom

@AK’s Domain - It was not on your end. The hosting platform for the school had some technical issues this morning. I sent a blast email out about this earlier,, though you may not have seen it. I just tried the site again now and it seems to be working. So.... Welcome aboard - I'm very glad to have you in the school!! Here's some preliminary advice to help you get off to a good start.: 1) Regardless of a member's skill level, this swing necessitates a complete reboot for someone transitioning from a shift & lift swing (which is typically the case), and therefore it is imperative that one take sufficient time to ensure that the fundamental components are mastered. From the ground up there is nothing superfluous in the Stack & Tilt swing - in other words, everything with a purpose, and a purpose for everything. (For example, contrary to shift & lift where you may be taught to keep your trail foot perpendicular to the target line as a means of "creating resistance" in your trail side, in S&T we flare both feet out 10-20 degrees in order to facilitate a free flowing, inclined hip and shoulder turn.) I cannot emphasize this enough, as frustrations predominantly occur when students jump ahead in the curriculum without properly dedicating themselves to the foundational base upon which our consistently repeatable, powerful, low maintenance swing must be built. Chapter 1 of the Golf Swing Simplified program (GSS) and Part I of Get Out & Go Play (GOGP) both address this. 2a) GSS: One of the many great things about this swing is that you can achieve solid ball striking even at the most basic levels. This is why I oftentimes will suggest that students park themselves on Chapter 2 of the GSS course for an extended period of time after locking down Chapter 1's foundational elements. Chapter 2 reinforces the body motions and the weight-forward component, and it culminates with what I call "The Best Golf Swing Practice Drill of All Time". Work yourself sequentially and gradually through the chapter, and then commit yourself to that drill in Lesson 2.8. Learn it. Practice it. Master it. You can even use this partially abbreviated swing on the course and play quite well with it as it will provide plenty of distance. (It actually is the full swing minus just a couple of power accumulators.) Once you've got that down, you will be well prepared to move forward in the curriculum and well on your way towards taking ownership of YOUR swing! 2b) GOGP: This quick-start program is exactly as it sounds - it is designed to fast-track you out onto the course so you can have fun - and success - playing as you learn! Should you choose this path, everything in #1 above still applies, and as implied above in 2a you will still want to work through it sequentially and gradually, mastering each lesson before moving ahead to the next one. In this program, Drill #5 - The Flying Wedge is the one you'll want to park yourself on and nail down. 3) Also, as you progress always keep in mind the V1 Swing Video Analysis, an effective and inexpensive service that I highly recommend to everyone in the school. I liken it to bringing your swing into the shop for a tune-up or minor repair. Scheduling one on a quarterly basis for preventive maintenance will do wonders for keeping things humming along nicely, and it's also a great tool for pinpointing and resolving any issues that arise. The process involves downloading the free V1 app and then submitting two videos to me through the app - one down-the-line (captured from your stance line, not the target line) and the other face-on. You'll find more information about the V1 Analysis halfway down this page on the Saguto.Golf site: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolf 4) Finally, please migrate over to the SagutoGolf Community Forum - which is included in your online school enrollment - and begin engaging with your fellow members. It only takes a minute or two to enroll - just go to your “My Courses” screen and you’ll see a link to get started. Once signed in you’ll be able to access and participate in the great dialogue that we are having on a variety of topics. You can start discussions, contribute to existing threads, post specific swing questions, make some new friends, and just share in the common bond of golfers from around the world seeking to improve their games and help others to do the same. I really think you’ll enjoy it! I look forward to assisting you through the school’s structured lessons and drills towards building a consistent, low maintenance, powerful, body-friendly swing that will bring your enjoyment of this great game to a new level! Tom, I struggle with this one! I find that tilting forwards promotes an over the top swing path, which you need to reverse dramatically in the downswing to avoid. None of the pros at impact are tilting forwards, they are all tilting backwards with the body shape like the letter ‘c’! Then they come thru and the club exits up & left. What say you to this?
@SagutoGolf
@SagutoGolf 3 года назад
What I say is that you are not understanding what I am teaching here! I know it sounds like a strange concept to those who have only ever subscribed to a swing model that is based on shifting weight from back to front, but I assure you that this swing is anything but a reverse pivot! Yours is a good question, though, because it represents an often-misconstrued notion and occasional invalid criticism of the Stack & Tilt swing, and as such I always appreciate the opportunity to respond and clarify. It is important to understand that the videos, lessons, and drills on this free channel - while fully aligned with the swing method I teach - address a variety of topics, issues, feels, and/or common flaws/fixes from one episode to the next. You establish your inclined relationship to the ball at address, and then in the backswing you tilt, turn, and extend to maintain that relationship, keeping your head in place and your swing center intact.
