I worked in the cosmetic fragrance industry for 40 years. I saw many different things walk by me when I would be working in a store as a vendor. You’re absolutely right so wealthy folks don’t have to wear stuff to show off that they have money. My husband and I have never been logo fans we don’t wear stuff with anybody’s logo on it. I am not their free advertisement walking billboard.

I’m 48, SAHM with elementary school boys. I wear a size 4 petite light wash non distressed boot cut denim with no tear . Excellent quality . I used to wear expensive suits every day . Now it’s a nice sweater denim and casual shoes . I think as long as the cut is appropriate , the outfit is classic ,well fitting and good quality , wear it . I’m Italian and middle eastern and look younger so it works . It depends on your choice of pant , your station in life and how you look in it. It doesn’t need to look expensive ( even if it is expensive ) it just has to be quality a good fit and appropriate for the person wearing it

Oh I loved those fall issues as well!! A nice hot beverage, comfy clothes, and the magazines to linger over 😌 The best tips for looking put together is wearing clothes that fit properly, colours that match your personality and lifestyle, and making sure your clothing is clean and not wrinkled. I attended a wedding recently and a mid 40’s woman was wearing a too short, tight, wrinkled, and drab colour dress and every other woman, young and older alike, was dressed nice and put together. They had put effort into looking nice. You don’t have to spend a lot to look nice, I shop at secondhand stores for 90% of my wardrobe and have been told for decades how stylish I am.
@spgard29
@spgard29 2 года назад
Me too! I'd grab September Vogue, Bazaar, sometimes InStyle (though I'm definitely not a celebrity hound, they'd often have articles on how to organize your wardrobe or put outfits together), Vogue UK, Mirabella (remember that? I loved that one), Allure. I savoured them, and saved them for years -- until I ran out of storage room! I can remember my mother looking at them, shaking her head and saying, "But they're mostly just ads!" Yep, and that's where I learned a lot!

I dislike and have always disliked logos. I enjoy quality, classic pieces that will forever look elegant. Some trendy pieces can be easily worn with classics ie chunky loafers or oxfords worn with jeans and a nice tee or button down shirt. Thanks Nancy Still hoping that you will share your weight loss plan/lifestyle 😊

Great video Nancy. I totally agree with not wearing distressed jeans, logos on clothing, and too much makeup and jewelry. I do however use slouchy purses most of the time. I only own 2 structured bags and they're relatively new purchases. I also just bought a couple pairs of lighter washed jeans as all of mine were dark indigo or black and I wanted a change. Variety makes the world go round.

A little distressing in jeans, especially if it's authentic can really ground a look. I dont avoid it. I like slouchy too.

I believe that it depends on the individual. Nancy knows her style and rocks it well. Iris Apfel rocks it well too! However, you need to be conscious when you are getting it wrong…been there done that but I’m still working at refining my style. It can sometimes look expensive and sometimes cozy and approachable 😊but I do it on purpose ❤

Nice to see a lady with a more classic look! I cant imagine why anyone older than fifteen would put on intentionally torn jeans - it is disrespectful of the underpayed women making them for a start and also arrogant in relation to poor people everywhere who can't afford to replace their worn out clothes.

I'm enjoying your channel and agree with 90% of your advice. My favorite bags are by MZ Wallace and they are not structured. Two native New Yorkers (both women) started the company many years ago and they are chic, functional, and lightweight. They travel well and have beautiful details--leather accents, great hardware. I think you can modify these ideas to suit your own style and needs. Great taste comes in many forms and I love the way you put your own outfits together. It suits you and you look great!

Hi there Nancy. I think you have many good suggestions. One thing though…I am 62 years old and I have stopped wearing those scarves like the one you have on in the vid years ago. (Sorry) I find that they just get in the way, unless they are a lighter type of scarf. And I don’t wear eternity scarves. I think they are dated. You do a fabulous job on your videos. 💕

I still like artisan jewelry and hobo bags. I don’t reach for them daily but they definitely have their place. I do agree with everything else. I’m not a fan of the denim with holes and strings or labels on everything . Having said that, I do enjoy seeing how everyone puts themselves together. I saw several of your nightmares yesterday. To me it’s self expression. I’d never make a good channel lol. I do sincerely thank you for your advice.

Everything you say makes sense. Thank you. I have been enjoying your videos. I do struggle in autumn and winter with the thicker layers I wore as a youngster, as they add such bulk, now undesirable. Even scarves are usually too big and bulky, swallowing up the v neckline and overall shortening my silhouette as well. Thank goodness I can still wear a bit of a heel or wedge as this helps me, but these new enormous thick soles on shoes are troublesome. In a Canadian winter it is hard to be warm and not look like a walrus after 50. (I am a plump 70. LOL)

Hi Diane. I am 65 in Chicago, just qualifying as obese. I have Rheumatoid arthritis and have trouble fitting into shoes and boots, even 12W. The best I can do is balance the clunky boots with a short puffy "car coat" over slim or straight leg pants or a knee-length skirts. I usually have to carry a tote with smaller scale shoes to change into. (That Canadian jet stream blasts us after a swift trip across Lake Michigan, so I can relate to your weather challenge.) I skip hats and scarves and rely on an attached hood that can be handy and only employed when necessary. I don't like stuffing gloves into already bulky coat pockets so I keep my hands inside the pockets when it is brutal outside and leave the big mittens at home. On -25F days last year, I wore a cloth face mask that was less bulky than a scarf, saved my nose from frostbite and added little bulk to pockets. It's not ideal, but every little bit helps. 'Just use balance to to the best I can with what I am and what I have right now.

I’m a spring, and it’s tough to find clothes in the autumn and winter. I wear a lot of brown, cream, and green during the cooler months. Living in Florida makes this easier, as we don’t have the cold days like up north. TBH, I wear winter clothes in the summer, as my work is always so cold.

What Vogue taught me is that the set and the lighting are every bit as important as the outfit. Diffuse general lighting is fine for broadcloth and tropical weight wools but straight directional light will show off deeper textures like slubs or cables. Multiple points of light will enhance shiny surfaces like buttons, buckles, patent leather, satin, jewelry and nail varnish. And the background of your surroundings may make you stand out in your outfit or camouflage or clash with what you are wearing. Wear the same outfit in an art museum and a grocery store and compare how you look and feel in the different environments. Is the backdrop of your home enhancing or detracting from how your outfits present you? Is your lighting complementary to what you are wanting to achieve? You could be wearing the most up to date and flattering outfit, but sitting on a busy patterned chintz sofa under harsh florescent light or cool LED light that could seriously detract from how you appear. I am convinced that this is one reason Scandinavian decor is so popilar; everyone looks great in a simple and well-lit non-competing back-drops. If you are going to go someplace where you will be sitting on a Ralph Lauren plaid sofa, consider wearing solids and neutrals to look good. Outside on overcast days, periwinkle and reds really come alive with that kind of natural light. Those Vogue photographers really knew how to make people look good with their staged sets. There's no reason we cannot do the same. And selfies are a great way to study our own appearance interactions with our environments. Karen Britchick has a lot of good examples in her well thought out Instagram photos.

Enjoying your videos. Think you look great in your vibrant colours. Almost sad Lilly Pulitzer isn’t available in the EU. But then I know it’s not me. I’m a soft summer and look best in washed colours. Can’t wait for your make up regimen. Being 63 and retired (your anti-frumpy video really made me 😢 because it’s a trap I’m falling into after 43 years of business dressing being a PA. So trying to find new stay at home clothes and make up without looking frumpy is a real challenge. Also, underwear for big busted women that hate underwired bras after 53 years of hell would be very welcome ! Keep up the good work !!!

I just purchased a designer bag. It’s small, but it does advertise who made it. I carry it as an everyday bag. I spent the money, and I’m getting my money out of it. I do switch to other bags once in a while. But that one is my most used bag. It’s a smaller crossbody or shoulder bag. And I have seen a lot of dupes for it. Had I known that I might have bought the dupe. But I’m 63 and it’s my first designer bag. I’m not trying to flaunt it. But I will keep using the bag. My oldest granddaughter has already called it when I die. And she isn’t getting it before that. I have purchased darker denim and I bought some corduroy pants, for winter. I bought gray and brown. I can’t wear brown near me face, but I can wear it on the bottom of an outfit. Gray isn’t a favorite color of mine. But as a bottom I will wear them too. I live in the south now. I moved from the north and my blood has thinned. I couldn’t handle the cold, that’s one of the reasons I moved. But now I’m ridiculous. If it gets to around 50 it’s cold. My youngest daughter still lives in the north and she thinks I’m crazy.

I think they’re fun and I’m over 50. I’m slim and athletic and have a plucky, quirky yet classic style and the lug sole look adds just the right amount of zing to my classic slack and blouse with rolled up sleeves - little scarf. We are all so different in what works for us and isn’t that part of the fun.

I totally see where you're coming from. The relationship between designer brands and consumers can indeed be complex. I think distressed jeans look trashy, no matter the age. I think common sense should dictate what we wear. I like to dress up. I like big jewelry. I don't wear things that show skin or that are too short because they look bad on me. To each his own. Everybody should wear what they want within reason. I was watching an award show from back in the day with Elizabeth Taylor. She was the definition of elegance. Today, the more skin they show, the more popular. They knew how to dress way back when.
