Are you sure you want a pet cockatiel? Larry Bird screams measured with a decibel meter!

Diana uses a decibel meter to measure how loud Larry Bird is. Larry Bird is a the 20-year old cockatiel. Even though he is much smaller in size than other kinds of parrots like cockatoos, macaws, and amazons, he can still produce loud piercing sounds (screams and yells). This info might be helpful for anyone thinking about buying a bird for the first time (or hopefully ADOPTING a bird instead of buying)!

I like the sounds birds make. To me it's like singing. The songbirds anyway xD I know they can get pretty loud though!

Instant sub when I heard your bird making the same sound mine makes. It makes me feel a little better that mine's not the only one that can really hurt the eardrums.

I didn't know how loud they could be, when I got my baby bird. She wakes me up with screaming early hours everyday. The worst part ,like seen in the video, my birb screams directly into my ear canal 😭. But they are lovely birds and they attach so much to the owner. Does your bird scream for attention, I wonder how to change this behavior?

Spending adequate time with your bird and bonding with them so they don't feel the need to scream for attention (as much). Spend 2-4+ hours with your bird each day outside of the cage. But also, don't reward bad behavior. Like running into the room the moment your bird screams for attention, that just means to the bird "I scream, owner comes" so don't step back into the room until your bird had quieted down. Also make sure your bird gets 12 hours of sleep a day. Birds are going to be noisy, that's how they interact in the wild and its only natural for them so don't get too upset about it. It's completely normal and all apart of your commitment to owning a bird. p.s. I'm sure you love your bird tons but please don't get frustrated with your bird because you didn't research enough beforehand about how loud they get- I don't mean it in an offensive way either. I'm sure you'll get used to the noise though! I did, I lived with a cockatoo and an amazon so cockatiels are nothing! super quiet birds overall compared to cockatoos, conures, African Greys etc.

@@tara1x that's good to know. I'm definitely gonna be able to spend a lot of time with my bird, and reinforce good behavior like you mentioned. Is there anything else I could do to get a cockatiel to quiet down that you know? How long did it take for your bird to chill and stop screaming all the time when you reinforced the right behavior? I don't have the birb yet, I'm going to be a first time owner, and I'd like to be prepared. Thanks :)

@@elishan5895 like all parrots they really need a companion of their own kind. They become dysfunctionally attached to their humans otherwise. They panic when you leave the room which makes them scream... they get bored alone in their cage so they scream... etc. And make sure you never buy a bird from a pet store, they come from bird mills. Find a local rescue, a rehome on craigslist or a responsible breeder on e.g. birdbreeders.com

Worth mentioning how quickly you do get used to the noise, even when you have several tiels. The noise of your feathered babies happily screeching their little beaks off can even be pleasant & soothing. Not like other noises in the same decibel range. All depends if you are the type of person who gets irritated being woken by a dawn chorus or not. They sleep a lot during the day so its not constant. Their silence can actually cause you to worry about what they are up to, much like kids I guess lol.

@@NerdwithaBird I have one (named Einstein). He's around 19 years old and, just like yours, screams a lot. I find his scream very annoying (as in nails on a chalkboard annoying), and he's about twice as loud as our fire/CO alarm, so definitely loud enough to hurt anyone's ears. I've noticed that he seems to be light-sensitive, as he stops screaming when I cover his cage. Do you happen to know what would cause such photosensitivity? I literally have to keep all sunlight (both direct and reflected, even reflected off of snow after filtering through overcast skies) off his cage for him to stay quiet. Also, he screams a lot if I watch Looney Tunes, Spongebob, or any TV show that contains similar sound effects/music.

Mine is so loud. But for some reason he chirps and screams differently than other cockatiels. Anyone know why?
@NerdwithaBird
@NerdwithaBird 4 года назад
I think many cockatiels learn to vocalize based on what they heard their parent cockatiels sounded like. Larry Bird sometimes sounds different from other cockatiel videos, so I guess he learned his unique sounds from his mom and dad.

Some cockatiels have a quieter personality. Also female cockatiels tend to vocalize less. Enjoy your time with your pet cockatiel! 🤗🐦

Well if a cockatiel lives on his own, it will be noisy and loud, because they are searching for a companion. A human being can’t be a companion for them.

trying to call their friends in the flock from a distance or if there's danger lurking. It's also the sound they make to let me know they saw a hawk outside and i seen it in the trees. Or the time a hawk tried to land on the cage when outside. Until it saw me and aborted landing.

Sky I think they are different based on their personalities. Larry Bird is mostly loud in the morning, and pretty quiet other times.
@sirtraineewhat576

If you want a tiel they're pretty simple and not as loud as this lady says it is. Don't predicate your judgements based on this. Also fun fact the decibel scale and loudness are somewhat subjective and a loud conversation between a group of people is at 80db. Tiels have high pitched mellow vocalizations. Budgie parakeets are louder.
@giots9559

Mine, although a male, is quiet... Only when i leave hone, he sounds really loud for some seconds.. I think they adopt to their environment. Quiet house, quiet tiel :)
@sirtraineewhat576

Cockatiels are among the quietest birds with relatively mellow frequency vocalizations. If you want to make a loud bird video I wouldn't pick a cockatiel and definitely wouldn't fake whine about it. Cockatiels aren't loud.
