Some insight for upcoming gaming content creators. The more you want to grow, the less time you have to game. Right now, recording game footage is under 10% of the time I dedicate to content creation. The rest all goes to editing, thinking of new ideas, community engagement and other more tedious stuff like brand deals and investments. The dedication content creation requires is really high, and as Harris has said many times, it’s something that never stops in your life. Not that it ever feels like a job for me, but that’s because I actually enjoy every part of the process. Definitely isn’t for everyone. Also, I am not a professional player or anything, so my experience as a content creator may vary from other’s.

Or should I just not expect to excel much?

So many great points here! I stumbled into being a RU-vidr and it's quite a bit different than I would have imagined. It is a blast BUT it isn't all fun and games - its also a small business. That means things like speaking with accountants, creating schedules, reviewing contracts, and sometimes staying up later than I'd prefer to make sure I hit my release schedule. It all takes a great deal of time and dedication. But it's waaaay worth it imo. I'd estimate that I spend 90% of my time doing support tasks - the business stuff I just mentioned, planning and testing content ideas, interacting with viewers, etc. and less than 10% of my time actually playing games. For a gaming channel, that may be surprising to people, but that's the reality of it. I think you really have to have a passion for all of it to really be successful. But if someone has the passion and drive, I'd always encourage it! As always, love your cinematography, writing, and the video generally. Excellent work!.

There is soo much extra effort people don't see and people don't understand until you go to make the content and you understand what is going on. Keep the format if you can I love to see the behind the scenes even though i'm sure it makes the editing/recording time longer.

I never saw myself as a creative person. I can't draw, I can't paint, I can't sing, I can't dance. The last couple years I've been finding creativity where I never thought there was creativity, which is coming up with ideas and concepts. This applies to streaming, video creating, but also as a marketing-communications adviser. Through RU-vid I want to explore that creative part of myself, no matter how big or small I stay. I went from having nothing to having something. That's really satisfying. Whenever I get caught up in numbers or viewership, I remind myself it's the making stuff that matters most. I appreciated the sober honesty in this video and the juxtaposition between you busting your a** to get the stream room ready while also making the content really helped hammer it home. #5 is by far the biggest question, in my opinion, and I'm happy to see you bringing attention to the fact that people WILL FAIL and that they need to be prepared for it. Awesome video, Harris

5:10 sounds rather boomy to me listening on my DT 990 pros, but as you have been super proficient in setting up your previous studio I suppose your new ones will sound great too when you are done :)

Really liked the casual style of this video, obviously it's edited and cleaned up. However, it felt like hanging out, so a nice relaxed vibe to some honest questions. Exactly the right tone for self reflection

I found myself asking these questions (obviously paraphrased) recently after a few months of really slow growth. I found I'd gotten way too obsessed with the numbers and was losing sight of why I even wanted to create in the first place. It took a message from a viewer to snap me out of that, about how much my videos helped them keep their spirits up through a stay in hospital. That's why I started, and why I'll force my way through every barrier that I can. Growth doesn't matter, nor does monetisation or going full time, what matters to me is the impact on the individual. That's what other creators did for me when I needed it most, and that's why I've wanted to do the same for so long. Making someone laugh when their mind can't help itself can literally save a life, and so I can't see myself stopping for a long, long time... Even if all those 10/10s still hurt and I have no time to play Halo.

Appreciate the honesty in this video. It's important to detail what it really means to be a youtuber because it's all well and good posting for the fun of it and expecting nothing back as some do; if you're looking for success you have to take it seriously and treat it with the dilligence, care and attention it requires. I've wanted to have it as a passive income to accompany my main job but I feel I wouldn't get the return for the amount of time I would have to put into it.

Dude, I really liked this video. In my case I started streaming just to chill, play with gadgets and play with new friends. Eventually your channel lead me to start my RU-vid channel. One of the best decisions I ever did, loving it so far! PS: that studio is looking dope!

Self evaluation and creating for the sake of creating are the 2 most important things to understand for YT. I do gaming content and I tried live commentaries, I tried high score gameplay, montages, funny moments, I tried Call of Duty, I tried Battlefield, I tried discussion commentaries. All with very little to no views. Then I did some self evaluation. I realized I'm not that funny, I'm not that good at the game, not that great at editing so what could I create. I found news, information, tips etc as my gaming niche for Halo and now I have almost 30k subscribers. Harris is on point with these topics!

Oh man, I felt that EDITING close up. Editing takes up the majority of my time, but I refuse to just throw something up. We just started, but it’s been far more work than I expected. Big highs and major lows. Just be prepared.

Doing music on RU-vid, no matter how frustrating it becomes sometimes, is truly what I'm passionate about. I especially love that moment where the music and/or the video starts to come together. Plus it's opened up doors for me that led to opportunities I never would've imagined I'd get elsewhere! It helped me make friends that I'd never get the chance to meet! I'm never gonna stop

For awhile I was skipipng this video because I was scared that it was going to make me question myself too hard, and make me think I'm not good enough to be a content creator, but this video only reaffirmed my love for it. Thanks! great video!

Actually helped my dude, I love your content - my weak spot right now is video editing (Filmora X is what I'm trying) - I'm very new to all of this - and I have to say your videos truly help A LOT ! Thanks so much for taking the time to give back man.

Thanks for this! It's really eye opening. I've recently been getting more invested in my channel and I'm really starting to see the tax it takes, especially while working full time. But I do enjoy it and honestly believe in this whole thing. So I guess, I should stick out and see if this can take off. Heck, if it doesn't, at least I'm still having fun.

Honestly, love these videos so much. As a content creator and freelancer of... god, six years?! With middling success, but enough that I've quit my day jobs and only work for my self, 🙏 these checkins are SO VALID AND SO HELPFUL especially now that I'm in the middle of this mess. And best part: None of those questions are specific for youtube but for any self-driven creative endeavor.

Love it.. what centers me is putting up stuff that is valuable and if it is missed, welll. Maybe redo it or do another,, who knows what people will discover as useful to them? Well I guess that MIGHT be reflected in the stats.

Interestingly enough.. this gives me more security in my career path. I fucking love the planning and editing of a GOOD RU-vid video or even a series that people can binge watch. I myself will binge watch something on RU-vid if it keeps my attention. Making something that can do the same for others would make me feel so happy and even if it doesn’t gain traction, if I can see myself binge watching it then I am happy.

just like any business you go in expecting to fail, make bad content products and learn from it and grow and comeback with something unique to you, thanks for this video it really helps as a reminder whats it all for.

(1)while I might not be good at it, I love all the things you mentioned as the creative process, Editing is a joy and I love watching myself improve, planning and coming up with ideas, along with interaction with my community is even more enjoyable then recording! (2) Im mildly okay with pressure, but I also have a good group of friends who helps me with the more pressuring part of the stuff, I think that helps. (3) I can be a bit if a scale for self motivation, If its me in the middle of working I can keep going till I have no other choice but sleep, but If I need to self manufacture motivation at the beginning its a bit hard, but I get there. (4) I get a genuine enjoyment out of creating youtube and twitch content, yea its a bit of a meh feeling when I don't get people in chat one day, or a video gets a lower view count. But there is always the next one, back to the creative process, I enjoy it, and it makes it worth it. (5) When failure happens, wether its videos that utterly suck, or thumbnails that looked amazing at first, but it looks like a 5 yr olds drawing the next day Or even complete community ideas that suck, It takes time and I'll set there and and think and depending on how big it is I'll think of the other options I could've done, "Oh could've recorded it in that style," or, "Could've used that color lettering instead." but after I process it I seem to get over it. I feel pressure and self motivation are honestly my biggest short comings, and I need to get on top of that, I really do. But I can work on that as I go, and hopefully improve. Thanks for the video Harris! 👍

This is an awesome video! I'm glad to answer positively to 4 out of 5. My work ethic needs a lot of improvement, but I have improved, just slowly. And with respects to the failure part it's important if not essential to learn patience. Sometimes things don't go the way we want, but if we do our part well and keep ourselves motivated, sooner or later we will get results
