Thanks for sharing Josh. Im a 44yr old housewife starting my Cert4 in carpentry. Similar deal as you at the beginning, my builder and I do all sorts every day and never a dull moment I f@#ing love it. Skilly kicked back on me cutting a barge board and I'm wary of it now! but wont be for long. I was terrified of heights a year ago and now there's nothing better than replacing a valley or drilling in roofing screws. I love the precision in building and the satisfaction of fixing someone's problem or making something new and perfect. I know the school work can be the hardest part for some but its going to be so worth it if it helps us to become awesome builders. We can all just look foward to the satisfaction of knowing our shit and teaching others one day.

I'm in kinda in the same place, exactly 10 years of grunt work, doing fry cook, retail, and grocery work. But I got heavily into woodworking during the pandemic. Took that rough year of experience, and got work in fabrication, (but for sheet plastics). It's not the same thing, but it uses all the same tool's, and so I breezed right in. Now I have a spacious quiet shop to do project's at my preferred place.

A building apprenticeship or any kind of apprenticeship is for anyone that is 1. Teachable 2. Hardworking 3. Willing to learn.

I’m not a carpenter. I’m an automotive electrician and automotive locksmith by trade but I do all my own work at home and relatives homes. I can definitely identify with the slow learning process and feeling like useless then one day your just doing it without realizing it. I’m not an amazing builder but I can now do any projects I need done. Having your own tools is a huge help also.

I'm 24 & just recently applied to a construction apprentice position for a builder - demolition company. I never could afford college & worked various entry level jobs. Nothing caught my interest except for the construction industry. I would like to gain the knowledge & experience so one day I can become a general contractor.

I have an answar for the question how old is too old to become a builder. It should be reworded to hoe many years do you forsee your body to have before it won't let you be a builder anymore. You can build for as long as you're willing to push your body.

I'm starting my third year in the trade and about 9 months into my apprenticeship, and I'm a week off turning 32. I came from 10 years as a car painter, and before that bounced around metal fabrication and welding trades for a while. I feel like this is what I was meant to be doing from the time I left school at 16. I pick up the practical side of things pretty quickly (already done a full bathroom reno by myself, done a few wet floor showers, done a few kitchens, currently doing an Axon reclad on a wobbly old house which is an absolute eye opener), but getting down to doing the bookwork is a real struggle for me, especially now that everything has changed to digital format since I did my autobody apprenticeship. Also, that Milwaukee saw of yours is an absolute animal isn't it? I love mine but I don't love the way it chews up my 5.0 batteries

Hey Josh, enjoyed your video. I am early thirties looking at a career change. How would you suggest finding an apprenticeship? Putting your name down through BCITO or looking at contacting local builders? Cheers

I've got a few videos in my apprenticeship playlist - I suggest contacting local builders direct. Even offer to do some work experience before making the full switch

What's a way better in New Zealand to learn DIY jobs for your home? I really want to do basic reno in my home, but scared I'll make it worst and end up creating a costly job. Is there anywhere I can take classes? I'm based in Christchurch. P.S. thanks for this great video. I came across your channel a few weeks ago and enjoy watching your videos.

Well youre on RU-vid so you can learn anything you need to know watching vids on it. Also the guys at Bunnings are a good source of knowledge to.. and can help choosing the right tools/materials etc. Alot of them are ex tradies/builders etc.
