I had worked in the hospitality sector since I was 16. After doing a stint as a roofing laborer while traveling through North America I fell in love with construction. Upon arrival back to New Zealand, I signed up for a building apprenticeship as a 24-year-old and never looked back.
I worked under an old school builder and we did everything ourselves, from digging foundations to installing the roofs. This gave me a wide range of experience and exposure.
I have since moved on from being a hands-on builder to running the business side of things, but this apprenticeship has given me a good grounding, and life long skills.
Too many people are going out and getting university degrees and I would definitely recommend the trades if you're considering this.
I studied on the job with BCITO
