RESUMING: CLEANSE: Makeup remover Cleanse Exfoliation (manual OR chemical) CONSISTENSY (from lightest to heaviest) Toner Light serum Moisturizer COMPLETE Sunscreen Makeup (not for everybody) About face masks: not all “masks”are actual masks, they’re all different, pay attention to that. You’re welcome.
I love that little story about your mom with the sunscreen. I don’t know if you remember, but my mom and I won your mother’s day giveaway with olay a few years ago. My mom and I were so excited. Memories like sunscreen with your mom and prom dresses with my mom, these moments are so dear. I love that things like that are woven so easily into educational videos like this. You are a forever favorite of mine.
I think every teenager should watch this video at least once so that they know how to care for their skin. I didn’t know about the importance of skincare routine until I was in my early 20s because no one taught me how to do it properly. ❤️
Stopped using makeup (even though it was quite basic one) at 40. 48 now. Dedicated to a healthy skin. Rarely putting some lightly tinted spf cream with a couple of blush 'strokes' when I attend an event (party, wedding...). Feels soooo good and liberating.
Over the past decade I have added more products to my routine as I get older. Being 35 now you are right no one has ever taught me the order in which to keep my skin healthy. Shocking but now I can move things around to maximize the benefits and see better or the correct results from them. Thank you so much for making videos like these and so many of your past ones they are forever helpful. 🤙🏼
I've been watching you for roughly a year, you are so smart funny and just damn right down beautiful you seriously brighten my day with every video , I've learnt so much and I hope one day I can meet you and just say thank you in person you've seriously changed my life with your videos 🙌🙌🙌
Your parents did not teach you how to put on serum?! That was funny and true. They did not, but luckily we have you! Thank you for another great video ! Love your energy ❤️
Dr. Dray recently did a video on how to layer products. She said that the “thinnest to thickest” method doesn’t work bc the order of application should really be determined by the specific products you are using. She suggests applying moisturizer first so you aren’t applying irritating products (like chemical exfoliants) directly to your skin. Did anyone else see this video?
R P I saw it, and I’m so glad I did! I always had a hard time using chemical exfoliant until I did what she recommended. Now I can use them with way less irritation.
SaBr 417 I’m so glad it’s working for you! I just started trying it. I have to watch Dr Dray’s videos at 2x speed so I was hoping I didn’t misunderstand what she said. I understand both opinions on which order to apply products, but since Dr Dray treats actual patients, maybe there is a little more validity to her method? 🤷🏼♀️
I used to put no spf because it was greasy and never wash my skin nor put any cream. I WAS SO WRONG. I just started investing into skincare and there is just so much I still need to learn. But for me, anti aging is the most important type of products. No you can't anti age, but you can sure slow it down as much as possible. And all the products I buy I don't go for anti-aging advertising, but more on the ingredients it has. I loved this a lot.
Cassandra Bankson please do a video on Dr. Drays theory of putting moisturizer first then doing exfoliants or many things afterwards and putting products on wet or dry!
Ayla Bilse, I second this. I don't know whether I should put hyaluronic acid and non-oily water based moisturiser on damp skin (as per Dr Dray's suggestion) and apply Paula's Choice exfoliating lotion afterward. Is the latter going to work? If not, the it would have to go first on dry skin, but then does one ditch hyaluronic acid, as it is said that it absorbs water from your skin instead of retaining moisture on your skin if it is applied on dry skin? I really have not found an answer to such question.
I'm wondering if you could do a video for beginners, as to what product(s) to start your skin care routine, as cleanser, moisturizer and SPF or just cleanser for a week and then add another one or do spot test for 2 days start applying it to your face and then add another one.
I've been wanting a video like this forever! Just started watching your videos ! Absolutely love them!!!! Finally found a set of skincare videos that are fast ,all informative and no blah blah blah !! Thank you sooo much 🥰 plz keep posting 😍
Cassandra, I love your videos! But im confused where a prescribed retinol cream would go in the skincare routine. Do we need a toner with a retinol cream? If so, does it go before the toner and then apply a serum?
Thank you for sharing this video. I'm 21 years old and I'm wondering if all these steps we should do it in the morning and in the evening. Right now I'm not using any product, but I want to start taking care of my skin. My mother says that I'm too young to use all these products, but I don't share the same opinion. Thank you again, I love your videos.
My favourite mask is pure green clay mask( i buy it from local store, for 0,80 eur cents) , It takes away redness, cleanse pores, heals pimples and scars fast, mattifies skin.
I just started using The Ordinary skin care products but they have so many I didn't know what to buy and there was no one in the store with any information ! I would love someone as knowledgeable as you to go through all the products and ingredients
I am so happy to hear your consistent stance on sunscreen use. I have had to go to the hospital emergency room due to my insane and consistent reactions to sunscreens as a child. Fortunately, I get to buy a little more time in the sun with the melanin in my skin; but I still burn regardless. I would love to know what types of physical sunscreens you recommend. You may have already mentioned it somewhere else; however I am a new subscriber of yours. Thank you for sharing!
I use face scrub, cleanser, toner, and maybe a moisturizer. I kind of need to look at a list. Oh and I use a pore strip for black heads that I have on my nose
Sounds like my list except that I dumped the pore strips after seeing a SciShow episode on Are They Really Blackheads and reading some dermatologists’ opinions of them. Your mileage may vary, of course, but I was happy to redirect the money. :)
Omg, please stop scrubbing your face so much. I recommend you ditch the physical exfoliation. And you should absolutely use a moisturizer especially after all the patches and scrubbing
Anna Flores Be careful with the pore strips. A lot of the stuff on your nose aren’t black heads and using those strips can make pores larger over time.
Hey! I'm 38yo too-we're not old or older *yet!* I kid, I know the feeling, especially in my body when it screams at me *you're not 18 anymore, quit it!* I really needed an order video too as I'm actually starting a skincare routine more than wash n wear.
@@MsButterflysting I have had acne since I was 7. I'm now 31 and have only very recently started to clear my acne. My goal was to clear my acne but it also got rid of the lines on my forehead which I am SHOCKED about. It looks like I've been having derma fillers. 1. Wash face 2. Whilst face is wet, apply a GEL CREME. Neutrogena hyrdoboost is great. After that, apply a serum. La Roche Posay B5 is great. Let that work for 30 mins. 3. Apply a medicated cream. I use Differin prescribed by the Dr. I apply a good amount all over my face, massage it in very well. Then apply a thin layer over the areas that have a lot of acne and lines. Just like a face mask. NB: not around the eyes though! 4. Let the medicated cream sit for minimum 30 mins! The longer you let it sit, the better. 5. Apply an eye cream. I use the cerave eye cream then apply a moisturizer to lock it all in. That's really important. I use cerave from the tub. Differin is great for anti aging too.
Hi Cassandra! Could you please do an overview on Glossier skincare? As far as which products are worth the money, the ingredients, etc. Your videos are SO informative and my new go to for skin care 😊
OmG this video answers all my questions 😂 I have been asking in every video I watched 😳 what should I do with my grease T zone and dry mouth and cheeks 😅 and I have avoided all the moisturizers thinking that's making my skin so oily 😳 thank you for your inf video I love it
I agree about the makeup. I honestly feel we’ve become so dependant and almost influenced to use it.. like peer pressure. You are still a whole and complete person who is put together if you choose to leave the house and be around other human beings without a drop of makeup on your face. As someone who has never worn makeup and has struggled with severe hormonal acne and still does on occasion.. I always have to tell myself these things and remind myself that my bare face is more than enough.. whatever state that it is in.. and instead of trying to hide or cover up my problem areas because of the insecurities they give me, I have tried to shift my focus to focusing on really healing my skin and forming a strong skincare routine and sticking to it. Seeing results come from consistently and dedication is such a good feeling, especially with the goal being to create healthy skin rather than hide “imperfections”. Lots of love to everyone on their journey to healthy skin, and to Cassandra for sharing her knowledge with us all 🤲🏽💗🌸
Shereen Mohamed Youre lucky to have not gotten into makeup. I’m just breaking the habit but that’s probably cause my skin is improving. It Can be really addictive and mess with your confidence. When you have it off, you’ll swear you’re the most unattractive person ever and everyone is judging. I’m learning the reality is that most people really don’t care. I know I don’t when I see other people. But there’s always going to be those judgmental people but that’s who they are. If it’s not your skin, it’ll just be something else they hate on
I just discovered your channel. Thank you for the amazing and very educated insight on skin care. Your skin is beautiful. And, I love that you are sharing your raw beauty with us.
I like hw u turn ur passion into a wonderful educational video Cassandra💓💓💓 Cleanse, Consistency, Complete🧚♀️ As Ive started using snail extract serum and moisturiser my scars are actually fading!! And my skin is way less oily compared b4 I used nothing on my skin😄 Also, what do u think about using a cleanser with tea tree oil in it?
Very good Video, the same problem is that most of the people don't know how often to use some cosmetics, that for example strong acids we should not use everyday. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us❤
Everybody keep in mind: the minimum necessary skincare routine is a gentle cleanser, moisturizer suitable for your skin type, and sunscreen. Moisturize where your skin is dry, and only as much as your skin needs. Other steps are really optional. And as Cassandra says, eye creams are unnecessary, and petroleum jelly (Vaseline) is an excellent (although heavy) moisturizer. (My preferred version of petroleum jelly is Aquaphor.)
I understand that a serum comes before applying your moisteriser but what if you have an oil aswell.? I use Jojoba oil so my question is should an oil be applied last after the moisteriser or before. That's what I really need to know. ????
Can you please please make a video on Japanese or Korean chemical sunscreens that don't have the dangerous chemicals that have been found in people's bodies. Because physical sunscreens really make me ashy and the physical sunscreens that don't cause any white cast are too costly and I can't afford it. I feel like Japanese products might be cheaper but way more effective.
Lilly Mathews I don’t know where you live but it might be worth you looking at UK sunscreens. I know a lot of the American sunscreens contain a lot of nasties that are banned in the UK whilst at the same time the American ones provide LESS protection ( Jenluvs made a brilliant in depth video on them, basically saying if you know anyone travelling to the UK get them to buy lots of sunscreen and bring it back to the US for you)
I heard that some serums shouldn't be put on right after washing. A dry face plus irritating ingredients can be cosensitizing. Like some should be applied to a dry moisturized face.
Should be applied to a hydrated face. Not the same as moisturized. Apply a gel creme whilst face is wet, straight after washing. Neutrogena hydroboost is good. :)
Thank you for sharing your thoughts on these steps, very helpful! *That chart especially, though hard to see as it's faint. I'm somewhat a 4 or 5 as no one in my family has ever burned, but we're Siberian Yupik (Eskimo if you prefer). But other than that it fits.* I've heard this, that & the other for products to use. But which order is the confusing one especially when certain products counteract one another, factoring in if it's day or night & how often throughout the week to use, which day to alternate what etc. I'm bad, 38yo & just starting to get an actual skincare routine going that's more than just a face soap & 15SPF moisturizer. I have normal skin with the few extra lines starting to pop up around the eyes, forehead & around the regular smile lines. Thanks for sharing & have a great day today!
So when do u use an essense? Is it before the toner and exfoliating?? I know u dont like using them but im just finishing up my bottle and want to be using it right lol and when done use the paulas choice bha liquid exfoliate?? Is it becore the toner? And do u use masks before u do ur skincare?
Thank you for this! I decided to go a more homeopathic route with the products I use in my routine, hopefully the aloe and coconut oil will help get rid of some of the scarring. You have so much knowledge on this topic, so thank you for helping us!
Riley Ford How/why did you decide on aloe and coconut oil? As far as I know, neither of those ingredients have been found to reduce scarring. In fact, coconut oil is not recommended for the face. If your goal is to reduce the look of acne scars, you need to use ingredients that have been proven to help scaring, such as glycolic acid or retinol.
Derick Ledermann hi! So I sort of became creative and mixed some aloe Vera and tea tree oil together because I know aloe has always worked very well on my skin make it smoother and shinier while the tea tree helped reduce redness... now for the coconut oil that was in it it helped with stretch marks so I thought why not try it on my acne scars... and it’s not necessarily helping much but it’s not doing harm... I actually see a difference in my face tho and it’s probably from the aloe... but thank you for the recommendations!
Double cleanse with a balm first, then a gentle foaming cleanser. Once a week a peel. Wash off Water based serum, anhydrous serum, oil based serum, moisturiser. Light to thick. In AM routine you should add spf.. Duh.
HELP please! Please could you clarify the reason for sunscreen AFTER moisturiser. I’ve always put sunscreen after serums but before moisturiser thinking that the moisturiser “locks” the sunscreen in. However thinking about it I suppose that the moisturiser could actually reduce the efficacy of the sunscreen by breaking it down? But working on that basis is it possible that the make up “primers” that we use could be doing the same? Or is it that it makes no difference if we apply moisturiser and then primers on TOP of sunscreen? Sorry I’m confused and after having 20 + BCC’s removed from my face and body probably caused by 1 SEVERE sunburning episode when I was 7yrs old staying at a friends house, I REALLY want to get it right xx
Sara Boughaba you should try out the mecca cosmetica To Save Face spf 50 sunscreen (if it’s available to you). Literally feels like a moisturizer, this product saves your face and the time you’d take to layer a sunscreen and a moisturizer. + cruelty free
Sara, You can’t afford 15 dollar sunscreen? That’s a pretty low price hun. If that’s too expensive for you you’re gonna have a hard time finding a good one...
Hello, I suffer from PIE and its fading slowly by differin, So i intorduced new producs, Cosrx snail mucin, Cerave PM, Rosehip oil, in what order should i use them with differin ? Please help me xxx
I don’t get it? Isn’t salicylic acid an exfoliant? Should I apply it before or after my toner? Cause she said to apply exfoliant after cleansing, and then she mentions that she uses salicylic acid after a toner?
I wonder that too! I've read that since oils (natural, 100% pure vegetable oils) are better recognized by our skin, we should apply them after serums and then moisturizer. So that's what I've been doing for some time. I can already see a huge difference doing it this manner.
Thank you so much for your perfect explanation! May i ask if it’s good to mic alpha arbutin with lactic acid? I also use niacinamide with alpha arbutin. Thank you so much!
MissTaken84 what kind of hyaluronic acid are you using ? If its liquid after toner . Because it would be the serum ... lightest to heaviest for the best results
I literally have a 21 step routine i do when layering and this is after my LED mask...I just dont know what to get rid of or whatever...I paid lots of $$ for my stuff and i dont want to be wasting it by not having it penetrate. What do you think? Oh, I'm 63 and have dry/combo skin with large pores
trish pugelli I have a TON of products too. I love trying new products. What I do is rotate through them. I do not use every product every day. I like mixing things up.
Cassandra, I really need to thank you for this video. You literally read my mind. I made an investment in a bunch of The Ordinary skin care since Ulta carries it now. I got it and I felt like such a dummy not knowing how and when to and what order to apply it. This video popped up 2 days after everything came. We VIBED on each other. Thank you thank you thank you...I needed this sooooo bad. And I want to tell you that you are looking Flawless girlie...I enjoy you and I enjoy all your videos. You are so smart and being 45 YO I literally look up to you when it comes to my skin! XOXOXO
What about face oils? I have read to put them on AFTER moisturizer because it will lock in the moisture. However, I've also read Before moisturizer because it's thinner. I do it before moisturizer because when I do it after, the moisturizer pills up on my skin. I also read, that it depends on the oil and it's viscosity. Help?
I’ve heard both too but most people seem to agree oils should be the last step after moisturizer. But I sometimes put a dollop of moisturizer on the back of my hand, add a few drops of face oil to it, mix it on the back of my hand and apply it together to my face. I’ve found that to work really well!
Its Consistency more important than the name from the product? For examples, toner its a water consistency but have a bit thick than my serum, my serum also water consistency but more light than my toner.. its mean my serum need to put first and toner? Both dont have any oil ingredient..
I think that cemical sunscreen for babys cant be bad. I always use cemical for babys, but also in Europe we have better ingrediance in suncreams, wich i am glad i am living in this enviorament.
I don't need makeup! I just really like to do it. I have the luck I really don't have bad skin. I have a beautiful skin naturally. I only have a little eczema/psoriasis dry skin problem. Just hydrate the shit out of it! And sunscreen in the makeup and sunscreen in my skincare. I will have 2 till 3 pimples when I have my period. And that's all.
Everything that you stated was textbook theory...an official specific order. In reality, you have to know your skin type and how it reacts to things. I think skincare order after cleansing, is as personal to an individual, as the products we choose. Everyone has different skin. I have dry skin and when I started following the "official routine" that you stated, I ended up with extremely sensitive, irritated, red, and peeling skin, so much so, that I had to get meds for. Things that I never have problems with. When I changed my routine to meet what I felt was giving me the best results, all of those problems went away and my skin is happy! I use a light hydrating spray toner, followed by a heavier and tacky moisturizer, then my satin finish serums, lastly followed by one final spritz of hydrating toner. Just like there's no 1 size fits all products that get rid of acne for everyone, or glow serum that satisfies everyone, there isn't a 1 size fits all skin routine. I use Murad and that system reckemends some serums be applied last, not first...and that worked for my dry skin. If the mainstream order works, that's great! But really, you can change it if you aren't getting the results you want. It might be worth a try to change it up!
no one seems to have the answer for spot treatments lol what i do is i apply it after the moisturizer. because i feel if i apply it before, it is just going to get diluted in all the moisturizer
Just to clarify, when you talk about chemical exfoliation, you would put that on before toning? I have the Sunday Riley good genes, which does that, but I can’t inanité putting it on before toning?
I have had acne since I was 7. I'm now 31 and have only very recently started to clear my acne. This is my night time routine. 1. Wash face 2. Whilst face is wet, apply a GEL CREME. Neutrogena hyrdoboost is great. 3. Apply a medicated acne cream. I use Differin prescribed by the Dr. I apply a good amount all over my face, massage it in very well. Then apply a thin layer over the areas that have a lot of acne. Just like a face mask. 4. Let the acne cream sit for minimum 30 mins! The longer you let it sit, the better. 5. Use a moisturizer to lock it all in. That's really important. I use cerave from the tub.
@@replicxnt wow, strugguling with acne is such a hassle, but I am so glad that you are getting that out of the way and finally seeing results! Wich is so satisfying. I think we use somehow a similar face moisturizer; I use a gel cream from clinique really comparable to the hydroboost. Thanks for your advice!
I'd say before. I usually apply it right after I cleanse while my face is still damp, mix it with my hyaluronic acid serum or apply it after the serum, let it dry and then follow up with my moisturizer.
I got a question, i started to use pure aloe vera gel from the leave on my skin for about a week now and i do feel like it works on damaged skin parts on my skin, but i really need an opinion on it. Did you try to use this and are there any cons?
I know this is SOOOO MUCH easier said than done... but why don’t you bring out your own range? I’m from Australia so don’t have access to all of the products you mention in my drug store, however, the ones that you mention that I see in my local store for example, Yes To Tomatoes, I just pick it up and buy it. I don’t even look at the packaging because you’ve recommended it! What I’m trying to say is , you wouldn’t even have to sell me your products through advertising, I just trust you. Maybe it’s because I’ve been watching you since 2014 but you know your stuff and I would be a very very willing buyer !!
