If you thought that clothes are superficial, you might change your mind after seeing this TED talk by Manou Messmann. You will not only see the clothes you wear in a new light - you will also understand the power of what your wear. Clothing is our way of communicating in a society dominated by visual information; it helps us understand ourselves and each other. Be aware of the power of clothes and let them help you create the future that you want.
Manou Messmann has a Master's degree in communication and psychology - a combination she uses to produce the latest consumer knowledge. Manou established her company Manou.dk in 2014, from where she brings state of the art consumer know-how to the fashion industry.
Manou wants to reduce worldwide clothing waste, which is one of the big environmental problems today. To do that, she helps the fashion industry create a tight fit between what is produced and what is consumed. That is done by understanding the consumers' needs, so that fashion brands can produce relevant clothing that isn´t thrown out the day after it is bought.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

Um, I took this advice to heart when I was 18 - "Dress as if you're already who you want to be". Got into shopaholicism & debt because of it D;

What she said totally makes sense...I am extending it...what you wear should be Authentic - does it reflect your values Affordable - look for the best suitable options within your budget (this is where your answer lies) Attractive : Does it enhance your body shape & skin tone Appropriate : Appropriate for the occasion you are wearing to She never said you should be wearing designer clothes well beyond your budget...

I think you missed the point then; or you dressed like someone who was broke, i.e. the latest and most expensive clothing.

Gotta love the cutaway to the audience-who are all reading, jacking with their phones or even (seemingly) sleeping!

yes she need to improve her delivery of speech. It was sort of monotone and not very engaging, but she has very valid points so worth watching!

No shade, just a minor point: Mediaeval Jack wouldn't "get up and get dressed". Mediaeval people of his social status usually slept in the same clothes they wore during the day, because those little Mediaeval-style houses can get pretty cold at night (trust me, I've slept in one). That said, this speaker makes a great point -- often, people aren't so much "trying to judge us as trying to understand us". That's an interesting perspective, because I do tend to "wear my present". . . Like so many people I know.

It's a slightly different way of putting it, but this is not really new. No matter what job you have, dress for the job you want. It usually applies to the promotion you want or a rise to management. No matter what your peers are wearing, dress like the managers.

I would constantly feel like I appear way too snobbish. And would probably be a misfit in my team because of it -- you like the people who look like you.

ZosiaSamosiaOo Yes, that's a problem, I agree. Like the TED talk where the speaker wrote "I like you" -- and then added "am" between "I" and "like". Thus: "I like you" because "I am like you". It's a double-edged sword.

It's the dilemma of striving only to being a team member versus becoming the manager of the team and earning more money and having more opportunity to advance. It's not about whether people like you but whether they respect your expertise and authority. I worked in the IT industry and started out as a contract programmer. Because I dressed for the job I wanted both my managers and my team members looked to me as the person who was knowledgeable and authoritative when it came to solving production problems and implementing better solutions. I advanced quickly and was able to develop faster because of how I presented myself.

You need a matured audience to understand the message . I don’t think her audience was even listening to her, much less paying attention to what she said. What a pity.
