Are Younger People Desensitised to the Meaning of Pro-IRA Chants? | The Tonight Show

Ciara Doherty is joined by Michael O'Regan, Senator Lynn Boylan, Senator Timmy Dooley & Alanna Cunnane to discuss the possible disconnect younger people have with pro-IRA songs and the Troubles.
Michael O'Regan states that in a post-Good Friday Agreement Ireland we must be "very careful," that pro-IRA songs are not appropriate anymore.
Lynn Boylan points to the Sky Sports interview where Rob Wotton asked Chloe Mustaki if Irish players needed education about Irish history calling it "deeply offensive."
When asked if young people don't understand the cultural history of pro-IRA songs, Alanna Cunnane points to how well the Irish team handled the situation and their respectful apology.
Timmy Dooley thinks "lots of young people" will reflect on partaking in pro-IRA chants now.
Ciara points out how normal it is to hear pro-IRA songs in a sporting context and how this is not an isolated incident.

These girls were in their dressing room. it was not in public. What they sung about was and is part of our history. Why should anyone have to apologise for their history. Perhaps the panel would like to remember the appalling cival rights record in the North of Ireland. Catholics in the north called in the help of the IRA. It was a war. War is cruel and like it or not the IRA fought for the right to self determinatiom in the earlier part of the last contrary. Pretending that shocking abuses by the British over centuries didn't take place is a total nonsense. So of course these girls were & are proud of the fight for Irish freedom in the past. They wouldnt have sung it otherwise. They still carry the post colonial scars inherited from their parents. It's high time we all stop pretending history didnt happen. Quit the political correctness nonsense and lets start to deal with reality.

This panel is filled with people who are ashamed to be Irish. Unlike this song being sung which was just a joke that wasn't intended to hurt anyone, do the anti-Catholic Orange marches need to end given that Catholics were brutalized and ruled over ruthlessly by many of its past and even current members? *They build bonfires mainly near Catholic communities to degrade them and send them a message.* Based on your priorities, you seem very detached from the reality of what Northerners went through just because during that timeframe we had it easy in the Republic. *Why are you not ranting about the Orange marches because they certainly don't aid unity and just needlessly divide people, and are actually a real issue?* Those marches are a reminder to Catholics even to this day to know their place, they happen every year, and they're a thousand times more offensive and insidious than these girls singing this song. The name of the Orange Order literally came from a Protestant king defeating a Catholic King. This situation is just ridiculous. The IRA only existed in the North because of the incredibly brutal way that people were treated in their own country. Do not forget that while condescendingly telling young people that they don't understand history. And of course, in the Republic, the IRA achieved independence which is something to be proud of. If the Northerners didn't fight back, they wouldn't have all the same rights that they do today. Dignity and equality is rarely given to people for free. You may as well shame Mandela next. Ultimately, it was not a serious chant. Get over yourselves. Young people know our history but we're not self-hating Irishmen who empathize with and avoid criticizing the behaviour of oppressors. Do better or quit your jobs so someone doing a decent job might take them.

You even have the unusual situation tha Derry City FC plays in the League of Ireland, with teams from the Republic rather than in the Belfast based Northern Ireland league. Rugby and Gaelic organise their codes on an all Ireland basis reducing sectarianism as much as they can. Such divisions allow cultural divisions to happen but I do not see how you could possibly organise a united all Ireland approach to soccer on this island.

Can anyone explain this to an American? I cannot figure out what they did that is any different then what we've done and said here in the States, as a former British Colony, we sing a lot of offensive songs about hurting the British. I'd just assume all the other ex colonies had the same shared history. Why is Ireland any different then the States?

Not only that, but it’s been a part of Irish culture for YEARS to sing rebel songs, absolute fools trying to make it out to be a bad thing. And as you said, SO many countries sing songs like these, but because there’s still somewhat troubles in the North with the newfound IRA people are saying we shouldn’t sing songs that represent our history

But what these politicians fail to see is that no matter what , when u get drinks in any irishman/irishwoman , you know fine well they become the most patriotic people and no matter their situation , will sing this song with all their hearts

I think its interesting the song isn't really discussed in this video or many videos at all. We have this tendency to loop in the IRA and the derivatives that popped with letters attached somewhere. Due to this association and the closeness of Britan, both as a neighbor and governing body of part the island, along with the other factors, that we tend to look at IRA and go... "Condemn". The issue is of course as a nation, ROI owes itself to the founders of the IRA. It owes the freedom we enjoy to those people in the early 1900s. And this history is taught to children who consume it, they look at it. They hear the songs that celebrate these people. And then are told "Wait, you cant celebrate the IRA! They killed people." and most if not all will know of the PIRA and the RIRA and those other named groups. But because the songs they are singing don't reference anything they've done, they continue on against the authorities telling them to stop. Because to young people, its silly to combine the two groups as one.

The British killed plenty of Irish people too both on the ground via soldiers and through political agendas. As an Irishman who has lived in the UK most of my life I do not agree with violence in any form and terrorism is inherently wrong. That being said people in desperation are driven to serious actions. In respect to this song, anyone who has been to a football match will tell you the songs and language is generally unsavoury. Just how it is. Listen to the England fans for example.

Education in this context has connotations of political re-education in special camps. A way of forcing one political viewpoint on a subject populace. Practically every national anthem has references to a nation fighting for their freedom and "forming battalions" and "sending people victorious" or flags waving over the "land of the free and the home of the brave", hardly peaceful or compliant sentiments. The big problem is the use of the term "IRA" for both the old IRA from 1921 and the version from the 1970's and the current offshoots that exist to this day. Many people will have high regard for the 1921 version but contempt for the 1970's version. In time people will probably have mixed views about the 1970's version of the IRA, realising that the other side of the sectarian divide in the North was just as culpable of crimes as the IRA.

The gentleman is correct. The UVF murdered many innocent Irish people in an horrific Dublin bomb explosion in 1974. Imagine if the Northern Irish women team, who recently qualified for the Euros, celebrated in their dressing room with UVF chants.? There would be widespread outrage, and rightly so.

Seems to me that the entire argument about "to-sing-or-not-to-sing" isn't about partition and a united Ireland as much as it is about one's freedom to say/sing what one wants. This kind of social censoring is going on in many countries regarding many different issues, but at the end of the day, the question is: What can I say without being beaten around the head and shoulders for being a "hater"? That said, it would probably be nice to put one's self in the shoes of the other (on both sides).

I think context is important here. Football chants are never meant to be taken seriously. No Manchester United fan literally wanted anyone to die at Hillsborough, yet they chant that Liverpool fans should have all died at Hillsborough. Frankly the plastic republicans at Celtic are only doing most of this to wind up Rangers. It's easy to chant this stuff then go home to your safe little suburban British house, away from the peace walls and division. Context is important too. Before the early 1970s my mum, who grew up just outside Birmingham used to go to folk groups and singing songs about the Old IRA was normal. The troubles changed all that. Of course there is freedom of speech in Ireland, although the footballers were singing in Scotland which has different laws and history, but how people choose to exercise that freedom may well impact on the likelihood of unification in the future.
