I read about the CLT drilling method probably 15 years ago, but until I saw your video about offset thumb I never really tried it. About 3 months ago I drilled a ball using your method and found I have a much cleaner release. Before this I had the same problem of fighting my release. I was always looking at thumb pitches and span changes with little success. I have since redrilled all my equipment using the CLT offset drill. Thanks for the series of videos.

Great tip. I use ovals and have always rotated the grips to align so the space gap above the fingers is equal on left and right sides

I dont use a thumb. But I use the hole to line it up in my hand. I turned my grips a little bit after noticing I had worn spots in them off center. Changed my game for the better. The feel is unbelievably better

My Pro Shop Operator, which is the only one we have available within a 40 mile radius always installs news finger grips straight with the thumb hole. I was wondering why my fingers were hurting and pinching my fingernails, especially the ring finger. I asked him to angle them properly and he said, "No that's wrong, I've been doing it this way for years". That really pissed me off, now I buy my own grips and install them myself. I need to purchase a finger grip removal tool, I use a home made tool which is a pain in the ass depending on how much glue was used. I have Turbo Quad Power Ice grips in my Strom Axiom and I really like the soft feel. I want install the same in all my balls. I also need a ball spinner, I'm tired of spending $$$ on resurfacing or polishing. The Innovative spinners are now $300 freaking dollars, the cost of everything these days is insane!!!

How do you find out yourself what size grip you are? My grips are a bit snug. Think I’d rather have therm one size up.

@@larrytate1657 The best way is to go to a Pro Shop and get fitted, see which ones you like.

I'm going to talk to my PSO about this. I feel a bit twisted when I put my thumb in the ball. Thanks JR.

Hey JR, Love all of your videos, thanks for sharing your knowledge! Question for you... Does moving the fingertips in this fashion allow the bowler to get more palm on the ball? I've been experimenting with releases and really like the feel when I can get more palm on the ball. Is there any rule for how much palm you should be getting on the ball? Iv'e heard mixed things on this... Feels more secure for me and allows me to stay closer to the equator at release and stay behind it through the release. But Im contorting my hand in a weird way to achieve this.. I'm going to try moving my fingers tips in the way you described asap and see if that helps.

Center line trans-positional is what its called and actually your pitches should be on that line. I've been doing this for 20 years learned it at a seminar in LV been doing it ever since. Lay your fingers over your finger holes with thumb in the ball, make a small mark between your fingers at the web, draw a line with the quarter scale, take a measurement from the center line of the thumb at the span to the line you made then figure your degree like JR did or a simple measurement like 3/4 of an inch, pitch the fingers on that center, glue the grips on that center. Jr did a vid on it same same...

JR what is your opinion on Vaccu Grips? Both the real Vise Vaccu Grips, that you drill the fingers at 1 and 1/32" and glue a plastic ring at the inside bottom, or the fake Vaccu Grips, which means simply drilling the normal finger holes all the way at 31/32" then switching the bit for a 1 and 1/32" and drill down to 3/4" up to an inch deep. Both use grips 2 or 3 sizes smaller to accommodate with the expansion when inserting the fingers on the grips. I have a tad bit of rheumatism on my finger knuckles and I've read everywhere how great the vaccu grips are for comfort and feel.

This is part of the "offset" thumb. When you drill a ball CLT, you have to do this. It's just a rotation with the same span-pitch relationships. I bet you find that your "Finger vector" is...... 18 degrees off center.

Will this help keep it away from rolling over the thumb hole?

Question, have anyone noticed if you use power oval grips and put them upside down it looks exactly like the shape of our fingers, the nail side being flatter and the pad being round. Do people ever glue them in that way ?

I ditched power lifts three years ago because they tore my fingers. Now with this tip and a better Pro Shop driller, I might give them a second chance.

Does angling the grips change your ball track/PAP any significant amount?

I've always used oval grips. The flat "lift" spot just never felt right to me. Comfort aside, do you think there is any significant performance difference from lift to oval grips? 🤔
@Tenpindoctors
@Tenpindoctors 5 лет назад
The lifts just give you more forward pitch. You can get that by pitching the holes and still use ovals. I use ovals. Was just using the lifts for visual

Why are we drilling our bowling balls with the thumb hole in the grips center line if the hand its not like that?... anyone has try to put the thumb in line of the middle finger or even further left? What would be the effects of such configuration
@Tenpindoctors

It all depends on the person and what they like to feel
@kennethsmock5970

This reminds me of Bach's bowling supply in Artesia CA. They patented a drilling technique for the thumb and fingers that aren't round but more oval, which is in line with how our fingers/thumbs are actually shaped. Put that together with this and things could be interesting.

I would think that if a Pro Shop operator is taking your money, he/she will orient the grips anyway you want. (within reason) I have been replacing my own grips since 1990 and had always make it comfortable by indexing it to my finger pad angle.

It seems just wrong (being a necessity) that pro shops line up finger grips straight up and down instead of getting the proper angle for each bowler. I will be correcting my angles. Thanks JR.
