This was a big help to me since I am picking the game up after 33 years. My firs session was revealing in that I need work on being balanced at the foul line, get6ting my arm swing loose and straight through and my shoulders square with the shot. The one-, two- and three- step shots should help with that. Same for getting the ball into a free swing.

One of my favorite practice exercises was kind of like horse in basketball, we would have 3-4 of us take turns calling shots, feet right of 15, ball inside 5...or feet left of 20, ball right of 12 but inside 7 so you could have a down and in shot or swing it. It helped us all be more versatile

Long story short, I quit bowling, started back, sucked, started watching videos like this, got better, threw a new high game and series but then started struggling as usual. Developed a new practice, used to be far right going outside in, I started far left and went inside out, found my sweet spot, going to try this to see how it improves my consistency along with a few other drills to improve my angles and carry. Great videos, I want lanes like these in the video in my house.

Just getting back into bowling after 3 years due to 2 surgeries to my dominant arm and a year of physical therapy. I'm also 3 years older and 3 years smarter now... But your videos are really helping me redevelop how to bowl. I used to love going out every weekend and bowling until I completely shattered my right shoulder. I'm to the point where my PT says I can bowl again, but should use a light-ish ball, so I got a fairly cheap 11.9lb ball that's fairly easy to toss around, but I'm not sure what sort of core it has, so it's kinda of just to strengthen my throwing arm for like a month before i really try to bowl. I kinda also bought a 14.5lb ball that I need to have drilled for once I get my arm strength back. I at least know what kind of core that one has and how it'll spin once I have it drilled. To be fair, using a 12lb ball, on the last date I was on a week ago I broke 200 4 out of 5 games :D So I haven't lost everything....just strength in that arm.

I have always taken ONLY three steps...left, right and then letting the ball go on my left step. My dad taught me as a child to throw the ball holding it as I was shaking hands. It gives me a fantastic curve, which works well for me. I was never able to take more than 3 steps.

JR, just stumbled upon these videos recently, and want to let you know that these are really instructive. I've been bowling since I was in grade school and used to watch Nelson Burton Jr.'s tips on ABC back in the day. I've learned things here I never knew, such as scraping the thumbnail in the hole on release, and the yo yo release among other things. You have a great knack for teaching, and your videos are really concise. Maybe I'm slightly biased living in the Detroit area, but keep up the great work!

You haven't been seeking knowledge, advice, or listening to Bo back in the day much if JR is just enlightening you. I guess living in the Mitten could make one a bit biased. Lots of great bowlers. Sure you're one in spite not knowing in's and outs. JR is a decent stroker, knows the game. Now go be Great!

I'm a beginner bowler and I'm sometimes having difficulty getting my thumb out early. From what I understand, you want to get your thumb out b/f your fingers and sort of let your fingers then guide the ball. I sometimes have trouble getting my thumb out.

Good video JR, but could you do a video about fixing a ball rolling over the thumb hole problem (I personally have this Problem)
@keithperry6137
@keithperry6137 5 лет назад
Rolling the ball over the thumb hole is a hand position problem. Work on keeping your hand behind the bowling ball and coming through. You can even try tilting the ball on your hand and starting slightly off to the side of the ball. Do it just using the 1 step approach that was discussed in this video. Also, make sure you're rotating your hand and not your elbow. Elbow rotation is evident by having your swing go out to the side or having your palm pointing down at the top of your follow through. I used to have the problem of rolling the ball over the thumb and rotating my elbow instead of my hand was the culprit.

Unrealistic for regular league bowlers, when each game (at Bowlero) costs nearly $7 and your drills involve repetitions “five or seven or ten times” for each of four or five drills. That’s the equivalent of three or four games of bowling, or $25-$30, just for drills. Not many guys I know are gonna spend that much $$ (several times a week?) to practice.

What I do that helps me to get better at 7 pin spares as a fellow lefty is shooting half a game throwing for nothing except the 7 pin even if it's not on the deck. If I'm struggling I'll use a whole game. 1st game is to get loose, 2nd game 7 & 10 pin practice, 3rd shooting inside, 4th shooting outside, and always making sure I convert spares. Sometimes I'm just having an off day and you gotta roll just to have some fun.

2:07 Brooklyn denied!!!! ROFL!!!!!! Thanks JR, but I can do that shot even when I'm trying, over and over and over. And I don't need to practice standing at the foul line to make it happen. I'm sorry to seem disrespectful, I mean it's great that you took the time to show us this, but, I need to learn drills and routines that get me strikes all the time. So far no one has been able to show me how to do that. And, I don't see anyone in the PBA on tour showing how to do it either. I am determined to make it a reality. Destined to be the only one to be throwing back to back 300's on tour and earning millions doin' it! :) I mean why practice missing?
@Tenpindoctors
@Tenpindoctors 5 лет назад
I'd try paying better attention. These drills are meant to be completed without worrying about knocking pins down. Theres no such thing as drills to get you "strikes all the time" that's why you've never seen them. If there was a way to get strikes every time, everyone would be doing it and the game would be pointless.. No person would actually think what your asking is possible. I hope you find it though.
@captainricco2777
@captainricco2777 5 лет назад
Yes, if it were easy to do it then everyone would. It is, however, easy to get 260's and 280's because I see high-schoolers doing it. I am trying to pay attention, however, I still have the idea that it is possible to do what I intend to. We can all agree that no one can throw back to back 300's on tour/tv, not even the best of the best. ...or the best bowler on the planet. Why? Because of crazy oil patterns? As far as I can tell, those patterns are designed to show the bowler what their real skill is. There is a way through every pattern.
@captainricco2777
@captainricco2777 5 лет назад
I am on the way to the lanes right now to finish my practice, I only bowled 7 games in scorching hot and humid conditions. They are doing construction on the building and don't want to mess up the air conditioning with dust. So, I can't get my usual 150's and 160's so I will go back, now that it's cooler, and dedicate one whole game to this drill until I can make it look as good as you do.

0:23 regarding hours spent repeating shot after shot... ROFL!!!!! Who really does that? I work out on the lanes every day and shoot at least 6 games (mostly 10 or 14). If only I could repeat the shot that gets the explosive strikes over and over and over for three hours, I would be grinning when I leave the lanes rather than cursing bowling and the guy who invented it and the people next to me who were throwing the solid explosive strikes I was trying to throw :) I'm hitting the lanes in about 2 hours from now. I know I can bowl in the 200's when the conditions are right. However, … IT'S A HAMBONE!!!!! Woooooooooooooo!!!! ...I'm hoping to see something in your videos that can get me at least a solid 200 for June league play. Also, I wonder if you wouldn't mind answering some questions I have regarding life in the PBA?

@captainricco2777

@@Tenpindoctors I did give it a try today. For a few frames, I went up front and practiced just trying to release the ball straight. For some insane reason, I can't seem to get my arm to go straight back, and most definitely am having trouble just letting it fall like a pendulum as another pro was trying to instill upon me. My arm is completely retarded and has a will of it's own. Sometimes I can get it right, but most of the time I leave one or two standing. It's a complete nightmare and I'm willing to travel to your lanes if you can just help me out of this rut. I need to get a 200 average for 36 straight weeks, starting in June, to get in on the PBA tour next year.
