I love DE. My chickens get it every day in their food. I like to add other things with deworming properties as well. I regularly add parsley, turmeric, hot peppers, pumpkin seeds, garlic, carrots, adjwain seeds, black cumin seeds, neem leaf powder and there are many other options
@BeckysHomestead I only have 2 chickens so I can spoil them. They will get other things besides their feed so it may as well be something that's beneficial for them. Also an extra measure of security like the other person that DE fails sometimes.
Thanks for the DE reminder & chicken math, i wanted 2 more hens but the store has a 4 chick min to keep themselves warm. But of course there were 6 left so I “had” to get all 6. 😮
Wow! I had forgotten that since I got chickens and putting DE in their food it was because I listened to you and your videos! Thank you for the great advice! My chickens are healthy and laying eggs!! Three years old!
We're down to 11 hours of daylight and my girls are still laying and I even had two pullets start laying in the last couple of days. I follow your advice and I have super healthy, happy, chickens. Thank you 😊
Just came in from my chicken coop and was happy to see your face on my RU-vid. Thank you for reminding me to go out and DE my birds. Been so busy in the garden I spaced. By the way you look very pretty today Becky. So happy you're back to making content🌿💛🌿
Oh I get it one cup of DE… thanks. I saw you do that in the past but could not remember what amount…. Love your coop! It was fun watching you build that… thanks again….❤
@@vickieadams6648 Diatomaceous earth (DE) is a natural substance made from the fossilized remains of diatoms, a type of algae that lived in lakes, oceans, streams, and rivers. DE is also known as diatomite or kieselguhr. It's about 96% silica and has sharp microscopic edges. DE is used in many products, including: Make sure you buy food grade DE.
Becky, I love your informative videos! I’ve watched your channel for years and I still live your old videos!! When I have issues with my chickens, I look up the problem and Becky’s Homestead! Problem solved!
I love your videos. Been using DE for many years and all my chickens are healthy and happy. Lots of room. Also took your advice long time ago about the cat kibble. They love it.
Love your videos! Could you guide me on which FISH-type protein, grain-free cat food you use? I don't find a 22% protein cat food. How large of a cat food bag per the 6-grain feed? Thanks much!
Bird got an enormous run. Im making multiple hen houses so friends can pick and choose. They also get let out to run all over. They soom pretty happy. My roosters have about 1000'ft run and they seem happy
Love your setup for the ladies. I've added the de to my ladies feed as you recommend and the ladies (15) have ample space in the coop and run. The eggs are clean. But about once every 6 months a lady will leave a poo full of adult round worms. I pick up poo under the roost and as much as I see in their run everyday so I know if there are other wormy poos. Is this something to be concerned about?
Hi Becky, thanks for sharing your videos. Where did you get your chicken feeds? What brand would you recommend? I've been purchasing feeds from Petco since the local store went out of business and the quality of the eggs has decreased :( Help! Help! Help!
every now and then i find a little hard brown speck inside my eggs. (i dont think its blood) it is not reddish at all and its hard almost like a piece of crumble inside the egg. it is usually in the white part. what is it and how do i prevent it ?
Off subject: Is there any way to get chickens to use a 2nd nesting box? Like maybe adding some herbs into the box.... anything at all? I'm in a neighborhood and I've got 6 chickens waiting in line and making a ruckus about it sometimes.
Can you do a video on neal he so cute on how you worm him and take cate of him I have a pet pig I love to learn I have chickens to your wonderful videos I love
I had chickens sick and even die and I think it was parasites. I do use DE. But it rained and rained and the run was flooded. We got the water out but then it rained again. I think they got sick from all the wetness. I’m back on track now
Hi Becky, I am planning on getting Buff Orpington chicks. I am currently building a chicken coop. I had looked into many options on Tractor supply looking for chick starters with the least ingredient list but could not come across any. Please share what food I should considee buying and for how long I should continue feeding the same feed from 0-8 weeks. I looked into DuMOR Organic 19% Starter/Grower Crumble Poultry Feed, 5 lb. on TC is this a good one to get. Please share other tips on feed and water supply. I really want start them in good health. Thank you in advance. RM
Hi . My hen is hatching babies . They are in a nest that is 4- 5 feet off the ground . Should i leave the mom and chicks in the nest or should i move them ? . They are 1 day old . She has 4 eggs that hasnt hatched yet . I didnt know if i should move them .Thank you .
We got a young Rooster with Pastey Butt. It was really bad. He had the diatomaseous earth in his food. That appeared to clear up but he began to loose feathers. He had trouble walking around. It was if his feet hurt. His comb started turning dark. We found him dead one morning. We have no idea why he died. He had plenty of room to walk, food and water a clean coop. His breed was not meant for cold temperatures. He was a Red Ranger in an unheated coop.
@@BeckysHomestead Oh, thank you! We loved the young Rooster. He was a hybrid and not used to an unheated coop. When it got really cold we brought him in an turned a heater on from across the room. Once it warmed up he was outside again. Then he started losing his feathers. Thanks for your kind words.
Hello Becky, Love the videos, keep them coming. I'm realizing that my 9 chicken are wasteful with my organic layer feed and I'm feeding a lot of regular birds (love them all) my cash is flying away. I haven't been able to find 22% fish protein cat kibble, its all around 40%. I really want to avoid causing harm with to much protein. Can you direct me in the right direction? Also do you feed in a tray/bowl or feed them directly on the ground?
Don’t worry about too much protein. Also never feed them free choice, feed morning and night and adjust the amount until they eat it all within 10-15 minutes. I throw my feed on the ground in the run☀️❤️☀️
I have three RIR’S and that’s enough eggs for me! Lol! Love my girls! But I’m giving away eggs every week because I can’t eat them all! But my family thanks me for the free eggs! ❤
I have lowered the number of hens I keep, because once you learn how to set them up perfect and feed them right, you get them laying steady, steady, steady☀️❤️☀️
For what I observe, chickens get sick very often, don't they? It seems it's always something. Also, I would DIE if I saw chickens attacked by predators. So I don't have chickens because of these two problems. They would be pets and I get super attached.
My chickens never get sick. If you know how to take care of them they live healthy lives and lay lots of eggs. As far as predators, eating them, that is how the animal kingdom works!!! I love animals and can except that. People of old invented chicken coops for a reason, to keep their chickens safe.☀️❤️☀️
