Something I feel like I should point out is that the theme of Area Zero could be depicted as a tragedy. Throughout Area Zero, we learn about our companions as they open up to each other. Arven is most obvious at this point since he is an orphan with issues involving his parent. He is simply a lonely child and doesn't know the fate of his parent until later. The sad part is that he had a feeling he knew what happened to them, thanks to the experience against a Titan Pokemon, but denied it. The AI professor agreed it wouldn't be right to call him his/her son anymore. Nemona simply wants a friend. With her coming from a wealthy family who has an older daughter willing to run the business someday, Nemona feels left out, apart from her family. Despite having a stable relationship with said family, Nemona is the only one who likes Pokemon training and always constantly looking for battles. In a way, Nemona seeks attention in the way of Pokemon battling but because of her personality, she always manages to scare everyone away. Penny is bullied for being an outcast. Awkwardly quiet and not social, she was an easy victim of bullying and simply wanted to stand up against her oppressors through Team Star, via Phone. Despite not being able to stand out or speak her mind, she did defend herself but at the cost of looking like a bully. As a result, Penny is sent back home to Galar and tries to disband her new friends without saying goodbye physically. Even the box legendary fits the bill. Because of its humiliating loss of territory, Koraidon/Miraidon was forced to leave Area Zero and now fears returning to it. Hiding away in its Pokeball, it only wants to bury its past until it is ready to come out again. Gamefreak knocked the ball out of the park.

@@dekaredfire That last part makes a lot of sense specifically through this lense because of all the evil teams, up until Gen 7 when the evil teams get goofy. Red/Leaf/Green/Chase/Elaine and Ethan/Kris/Lyra are tasked with taking down Team Rocket, Brendan/May have to face Team Magma and Aqua, Lucas and Dawn must defeat Team Galactic, Hilbert/Hilda and Nate/Rosa have to beat Team Plasma, and Calem/Serena need to defeat Team Flare. This narrative changes in Gen 7 onward once more insane stuff happens like when Elio/Selene must stop the Ultra Beasts (pretty sure I got that right), Victor/Gloria have to stop Eternatus, Rei/Akari have to defeat Volo and close the rift (pretty sure I'm getting that right too), and when Florian/Juliana must travel through Area Zero to stop the robotic Professor Sada/Turo.

I absolutely agree. Truly does capture the feeling of a descent into something truly horrifying, eerily pristine, and hauntingly beautiful. It also really drives home the implications that the “time machine” isn’t actually a time machine at all, but rather an imaginary Pokémon printer of sorts. The moment I reached the last station, and the Professor's dialogue was broken, distorted and words were repeated, I knew something was.. wrong, amiss. Then the player character, Nemona, Penny and Arven descend further, and we reach the Zero lab. Turns out the Professor is an AI, the "real" Professor having died long ago. Then the whole fight with the AI due to their line of code and script, and the Paradise Protection Protocol.. where the legendary that has been with us all this time finally gets out of their pokeball, after having refused to leave it during the entire descent into Area Zero like it wanted NOTHING to do with that place. All in all, Pokemon SV has a place in my heart for all the good reasons. Mind boggling storyline (in a good way, of course).

The JRPGer in me in my Pokemon game was speechless. The trainer in me... was awed by the spectacle that is Area Zero, but somewhere deep inside, the shock and awe evoked a sheer chilliness and coldness that this place represented. Putting myself in the world of Pokemon, Area Zero is an unnatural phenomenon, something that shouldn't exist, and if it does, exists outside of the realm that is governed by the natural law of life and physics. No wonder Professor Sada/Turo were entranced by the Paradox Pokemon and was consumed by their thirst of knowledge, I would be lying if my inner Pokemon fanatic would not have done the same thing they did, using a "Time Machine" to indirect make contact of Pokemon from different ages/eras. Reeling back to even in our own reality, Area Zero is man's footprint on God hood, no one and no thing could leave away unscathed without consequences to one's self or to the surrounding world around them. Whatever this Disc Legendary Pokemon is, it seems to me to not be bound by Gods of Time, Space, Dimension and Creation but possibly outside of the reins of reasoning and understanding.

Honestly, wish I could go back a few weeks ago and revisit that feeling of visiting Area Zero for the first time. This whole part of Scarlet just felt unreal and hearing the music that played there just felt surreal. The music definitely oozes the idea that you're not supposed to be here and that something is down there you shouldn't want to encounter. Definitely fitting for the beasts from the future and past, who should've probably stayed there, that call this place home now. All the lore and revelations from the other characters and Penny's true snark coming out was just fun to read. Best part of any Pokemon game I've played. More of this please. Also, why do I have this nagging feeling there's something else down there that we haven't seen yet. Another beast who lurks down there who makes the already powerful paradox pokemon look like route 1 normal types.

You know, we never did find out what hurt Mabosstiff. Only that it was some bizarre creature. At no point does Arven look at any of the paradox pokemon and go "that's it that right there is what did it". There's also the journals scattered throughout the different labs which detail the professors history but also mentions an "entity" that is the source of the terastal phenomenon but it's name is smudged and illegible. Then there's that weird disk thing with the hexagons and the fused beats/swordsmen in the Scarlet and Violet book. Area Zero hasn't come even close to giving up it's secrets. There's something else down there than humanity was never supposed to meet. Unless humanity shells out 30+ dollars for it.

This entire area might just be my favorite end game dungeon in pokemon. Not only is it the return of a proper dungeon before the final battle (since Sword and Shield didn't have one), but it's fully explorable, instead of being highly linear like Sun and Moon's end-game dungeon. The music feels fully unnatural to what you hear in pokemon games generally as well, moreso falling in line towards something I'd expect from Shin Megami Tensei over a Pokemon game.
@umbrielvandelune9521
@umbrielvandelune9521 Год назад
While I agree with almost everything you said and I absolutely loved this section, my only gripe with it was the linearity of the dungeon. It doesn't linear at a glance but in reality all you really do is descend a straight line. It would've been great to have more things to do down there because the vibe was so insanely amazing... Still my favourite part of the game and possibly my favourite song from all Pokemon games ever, though.
@luked6753
@luked6753 Год назад
@@umbrielvandelune9521 I think the linear works well here. The whole game is open -- and now it's ending in one slow, spiraling, creeping-dread descent. Making this area too open would have diluted that.

I think I just realized something incredible ! Area Zero is maybe inspired by Jule Verne's book "Journey to the center of the Earth " ! It fits really well I think : in the book a group of scientists decide to go inside the Earth and they end up finding a strange cavern deep inside filled with ancient animals and plants including dinosaurs ! And when they come out, they are near a volcano ( volcano = crater ? ) in Italy ! It's just a theory but I think it fits really well with the overall theme of the games and also because Jules Verne was a french author who is often seen as the precursor of SF with his many books of anticipation ! ( anticipation = future maybe ? ) And on top of that, I think the Violet/Scarlet book is supposed to represent Jules Verne's own book . It might just be me who is extrapoliating but they are just so many comparisons that can be done that I just think it's uncanny ...

spoilers! this song means so much to me, for no reason. you enter an area that holds secrets that 2000+ years of expedition and research failed to understand. you enter an area where Pokémon that should not be there are standing in front of you. you enter an area where chaos and disruption reign, and you have no choice but to continue down the spiral rock face. you enter an area that was so sought after, but your gut is telling you to RUN. you enter an area where you can stand in the room where the professor likely met their demise. where everything reached a boiling point. down in area zero, you are looking at the consummation of 2000+ years of effort, strife, and despair, and the actions of one person, for selfish, blind and uncaring reasons, nearly blew it all away. entering area zero for a second time kind of sets the tone: you’re standing on the ruins of progress. you, Arven, Penny, Nemona. you are possibly the last four, living people that will venture down into the depths of Area Zero, past the water falls, into the cavern and you alone are possibly the last human to have been in that lab. and to me, that’s what makes this theme so special. it intimately reflects the chaos, the strife, the destruction, everything.

Totally agree, I felt in danger for the first real time in a pokemon game. And I'm glad it tried to showcase that with the pokemon being hostile as well. When you first enter though, and the girfarig and farigiraf just stare at you, Eerie. Then later on they attack you... it's scary AF. Like the deeper you go, the more insane it becomes. Which they capture perfectly with Turo/Sada. They became so enraptured with their research that they went insane and died there. The pokemon felt unnaturally more aggressive the deeper you went down. And this music captures it perfectly. You know once you're there that this isn't a play you coexist with pokemon. This is a place you SURVIVE against pokemon.

For me, the building sense of dread was accomplished without it just being said "Area Zero is dangerous", rather using a lot of subtler details. My thoughts before reaching the finale: ~Arven has been here before and clearly does _not_ want to return, only reluctantly doing so with two champion level trainers and a hacker (who also isn't a pushover). ~Arven's Mabostiff is around Level 60 and was [likely] mortally wounded by something here. ~The Violet Book, something you read in the academy at the start of the game, mentioned an expedition member being killed. ~The ride dragon was weakened and drained of its powers, plus it was so terrified that you couldn't ride it upon entering the crater. ~Wild terastallized Pokemon hit like a truck and are generally higher level then those in the immediate area (generally between 5-15 levels, but I saw a Level 75 Lucario in an area where the average was 45-50). The average level in Area Zero is Level 55. (The roaming Magnezone and Garchomps outside the crater act as a nice warning too.) It ultimately had me asking myself, "Just what the hell is down there?" The music and the unnaturally ethereal lighting were just icing on the cake.

The descent into the crater was anything but a smooth ride, and once we hit the ground i felt quite queasy, not from the shift in altitude but mostly from the near death experience. We hopped off (Koraidon/Miraidon), Nemona was the first one off, I guess she couldn't hold back the excitement, and we looked across the crater. It was sheer beauty, hundreds if not thousands of Pokémon all living in pure harmony, separated from the grip of mankind. From the Girafarig found in the plains of Paldea to the Lycanroc found prowling the caverns in the Northern Province, to even Frosmoth from the highest point of Glaseado Mountain, all lived in a state of sheer bliss. Sure, it was a sight to behold, but the crackle of a transmission reminded me of the reason we came here. The Professor was somewhere down here, deep within Area Zero, and every step took us deeper into dangerous territory. My instincts told me we shouldn't stay here any longer than we have to. It was a long way down, and this was no time for a picnic.

You and me both dude, Reminds me of the Impact Crater from Prime 1 in how the song sounds to the feeling you get when finally getting there (IE EXTREMELY DANGEROUS AND UNNERVING!) to how the Story both has something that should not have happened... well happen there which could bring the entire planet's ecosystem into ruin and how Area Zero, like the Impact Crater, is the End-Game. Way I see it, E4 and Champion this time around are simply a means to both get stronger and get someone who can help with the dangers there so I can deal with them not being as big a deal this time around because becoming a Champion isn't the goal this time around... it's getting to Area Zero and finding out just what the hell's going on there and stopping it if possible. THIS.... this is what all three stories are leading up to. Even the classic one regarding the League as your Endgame lies at the heart of Paldea... The Great Crater... and hopefully eventually the Legendary-class Pokemon that was alluded to that allowed all of this to happen...

Area Zero gives this vibe that you shouldn’t be there, that it’s sacred and hollowed grounds. No matter how brave you are, you aren’t worthy even if you are worthy. It’s almost it’s own region within a region

This song and the area gives off this ominously mysterious feeling. Like you’re descending into a world of the unknown. Also love how the further you go down these big crystal formations are housed below and it’s obvious something else other than Koraidon, Miraidon and the Paradox Pokemon came through the Time Machine with them.

@ShadowSkyX

Guzzlord's world was the closest recognizable one we could tell as our world...in the future. In fact all the ultra beasts' worlds might of all been variations of the future. The professors do share similarities to lusamine. Not just neglecting and their kid, but their extreme obsessive nature. Yes lusamine had to be poisoned by nilhego to go as far as she did, but the point still stands. They even share the common dominator that their spouses disappeared/left them and seem to be the catalyst for their downward spiral - though I suspect the professors' spouse left for good reason this time, and just didn't want to be a part of their insanity. There was likely a promise they shouldn't tell arven anything related to their research or involve him in any way until he was old enough, but the professors are persons of extremes and their idea of adhering to that wish was just avoid Arven entirely.

Man, Area Zero felt like one of those places where you’re just in a completely different world from the one you know, and there’s things in there that you know nothing about and you should not be here. Every time I revisit area zero I feel like I’m sneaking off somewhere I’m really not supposed to be in, and yet it’s those kinds of places that suck you in and give you a place to escape reality in a way, you know?

If you pay attention to the dex, there are tons of dragons in paldea. All the psuedos from the previous generations except for jangmo-o and metagross - who incidently still fit the past and future aestetic - are the only psuedos absent. Incidently even the pokemon who aren't officially classified as dragon types reside here. That's why charizard is the only starter from Kanto; the mega evolution shows its dragon ancestry (or future possibility). Gyrados being here in fairly largely quantities might be suggesting this is where they really come from. And why they might of gained or retained some dragon qualities and moves despite evolving from an unassuming weak fish. What I find very interesting though that most dragon/esque pokemon share the same green and/or purple pallete for their shinies. It's of course in wildly varying intensities and shades but it's true.

Not only is the area surreal, but the music is also incredibly surreal. In fact, this is probably one of the most surrealist sounding Pokémon themes to the point where it almost doesn’t seem like it would be from Pokémon.

No one's talking about how PERFECTLY integrated this track was to the battle music. Just the serene and slightly off-putting music cutting to a track with such a sudden start and how it still reminisces the atmosphere's original theme?
