She's singing in that heavenly choir. Ms. Franklin was a singer whose voice was not like no other. She had soul in her voice and made any song her own. Sing on Re-Re

I loved it. Not every song requires a full throttle belting. I think she handled it tastefully with subtle improvisations. Every song doesn't require you to show your tonsils.

I beg to differ, in that Ms Franklin, God rest her soul, really muscled in and cut off the composer and lyricist, leaving him nothing but the background. James tried several times to take a lead on a single line but was drowned out: all he could do was smile and back off. It is a great performance, but it could have been one for the ages had it been a duet rather than a solo plus backup.

Thanks Babe for that comment - it is very different- but Aretha is all about mixing up her performances - style genres etc :)

I just listened to this for the first time and of course we all loved Aretha Franklin but this was not the best song for her to sing as a duet. James Taylor has such a wonderful voice and comes off beautifully however I felt the whole thing was a little awkward. In the beginning the choir and James were not together. The arrangement wasn't good either. It appeared Aretha was hearing the song for the first time and just improvising what James was singing. Having said that it is an iconic performance one that I didn't even know existed...so from that point of view it was a delight.

James Taylor's voice doesn't hold up to accompaniment of this size. I love him with a guitar, but he doesn't have an instrument suitable for backing by a full choit.

But who cares? Legends collabbing. That’s always interesting.

This wasn't a good match for either one of them. And there's obviously very little chemistry.. And this definitely wasn't a good song choice for Ree. But she looks phenomenal!!!
