This song chokes me up. In light of current events, never did we need this sentiment more. I listen and send my fervent prayers for national healing. Not since the Civil War have things looked like this in America.

This is what music is all about--all Art, in fact: bringing people together. Uniting us. Tearing down walls so that we may build bridges instead. As Eric Bibb says: we're all connected. Thanks, James! Lots of my friends were there Wednesday. (I was eight miles away, hosting my own birthday party!)

My favorite modern Gospel song -- by James Taylor : Once a year in January (close to Martin Luther King's birthday) I search RU-vid for any new version of James Taylor's SHED A LITTLE LIGHT (Oh, Lord). Just to see if it still gives me goosebumps, and tears of Joy. Never fails! James Taylor -- and a concert recording with a Charleston South Carolina choir “THE LOWCOUNTRY VOICES.” As you may know, any live performance (when the choir is this big, spread across the stage) the sound is less than ideal, compared to the original studio recording. Plus, you know they wouldn't have had that much time for rehearsal. But this is a great choir. Imagine if you were there, that night five years ago in Columbia S.C. the effect on your soul. I mean, if it can so affect us “by the light of a TV screen”. A lesser composer than James Taylor might not have come up with the song's uplifting bridge - taking the melody in an entirely new direction, and (around 3:18) our hearts soar at the words, “Can't get no light from a dollar bill . . . Don't give me no light from a TV screen . . . ” Yes, like something from The Great American Songbook (as celebrated in his latest album American Standard) his best songs have great 'bridges.' And this remains one of Mr. Taylor's very best. Every time I hear this great song, I think of my late Mom: She wrote a three-stanza poem (the best kind, right?) called “Ode to a Choir” (concluding with these words) “Ah, Beauty's NOT a fleeting thing! It lifts the soul, and makes it sing - a choir of souls to lift in turn. Though memory fade, and senses jade, Beauty, SHARED, becomes Infinity.” Thanks for sharing, James Taylor. Celebrated this night at Sinatra Family - Forum - Siriusly Sinatra - MY FAVORITE VERSION, YOUR TOO? sinatrafamily.com/forum/showthread.php/50225-My-Favorite-Version-%28yours-too-%29?p=1284198#post1284198

I'm 60 years old with an utterly modest life in music. Every singer-songwriter of my generation with an acoustic guitar in hand owes a deep debt, grateful tip of the hat, and strum of the strings to JT. Along with Paul Simon, he is showing what it means to age both gracefully and creatively. Decades of quality. Congratulations for a first Number One Album in a long and distinguished career ... giving us a blessed soundtrack to our lives. May the God who gives all Good Gifts bless and keep Sweet Baby James!

JAMES TAYLOR AND THE LOWCOUNTRY VOICES -- Shed a Little Light THIS performance is still my 'go-to-for-goosebumps' rendition of SHED A LITTLE LIGHT. James Taylor with "The Lowcountry Voices" choir of Charleston, South Carolina. Concerning which, I see my namesake wrote (2 years ago): My favorite modern Gospel song: Once a year in January (close to Martin Luther King's birthday) I search RU-vid for any new version of James Taylor's SHED A LITTLE LIGHT. Just to see if it still gives me goosebumps, and tears of Joy. Never fails! You never claimed to be perfect, but your music has a purity, grounded somehow on the Rock of Ages. I could write a short and hopefully not too boring novel about how your music influenced me personally throughout my life, at different stages, a constant theme in the background, sometimes very near and alive, sharing with others. You make me proud to be from Morganton, North Carolina, a UNC-CH grad, a singer, lover of rich harmonies, and musician honored to have opportunities to change hearts with music. God bless you on your ongoing journey down "that lonesome road, [hopefully never quite entirely] all by yourself," unless you need some alone time. May you never be isolated from those that love you unconditionally and go out, many years from now, singing with that "smiling face." Thank you for continuing to inspire.

Please share this video as we search for answers and kindness for Charleston and so many lost to senseless violence, including Cecil. My husband and I are close to obsessed with JT and when his album October Road came out years ago, we didn't know it, but we were fortunate enough to be at the HBO recording for that album. Getting chills remembering it. We had no idea why the lights were so brignt and aimed at the audience or why, as we entered, we were asked to sign agreements to be included in this. This song is not well known, and although we knew it, it didn't mean what it did to us after we left. When he performed it for October Road it was used more as a tribute to those associated with 9/11. I hope you'll take a couple of minutes to listen to JT as he "Sheds a Little Light".
