Seems like a really unsettling species of ant with how ravenous they can be of their environment. On the other hand, there is a certain level of beauty in how they are able to cooperate with each other. Their rapid expansion combined with their efficiency makes them scary though.

Very good video about these fantastic creatures. They are very dominant here where I live in Alabama,USA and I even remember when Fire Ant beds were very common..they are very rare now. Since the Argentines marched in it really has changed the varieties of insects we used to see here unfortunately. Having said that however I am fascinated in watching how they organize themselves ( it's therapeutic to watch) into ant highways when they discover food...they remind me very much of how humans in a large society cooperates..it's no wonder they thrive everywhere they are!

I'm so happy you did the Argentine Ants! Thank you! It is so important we learn which ones these are as here in Amrtica they are the #1 home invaders mistakenly called "sugar ants". They'll line in our walls or a little hole in the soil near our home or uber cracks in walkways or under human paper litter if it's damp. These guys are very adapted to humans and love us dearly! I hope you enjoy your new colony, as they are the most fascinating to watch and keep as a new ant keeper.

I have a question: since these non-native Argentine ants cooperation is so effective, why didn't this behaviour occur naturally through evolution with other ant species? Great video; love all your work :)
@cerbzzz7147
@cerbzzz7147 4 года назад
Only a few ant queens were introduced when they first moved continents so there was less genetic variation and a lot of them were killed so even less variation
@Monsolido
@Monsolido 4 года назад
Keep in mind that evolution is a slow process. Drastic changes, such as the invasion of a foreign specie, are often temporary. Invasive species destroy their habitat and ultimately their own chance at survival. It only works as long as there's more untouched habitat to destroy. After a while they will hit a dead end and whatever trait makes them invasive will prove detrimental and be selected against. Ants aren't supposed to cooperate on a global scale. It's an accident. Just because it's working right now doesn't mean it's a successful strategy in the long run. So the present situation might not be stable and representative of the future. If argentine ants survive on different continents, isolated colonies will drift genetically to the point of attacking each other again.

They will really set up anywhere. I once found a new little colony setting up underneath a speaker in my living room. The area under the speaker is less than half an A4 sheet. I found the queen and captured her and a few ants and some brood and tried to set up my first ant farm, but they left after a day or two when I accidentally let the water barrier dry up. (I only had this pretty ordinary kids ant farm from when I was kid, and the ventilation holes were too big for the Argentine ants so I used a water mote to keep them in. I didn't know what I was doing.)

@JordanDeanFilms
@JordanDeanFilms 7 лет назад
Yeah, planning on doing an update video on my Pheidole colony eventually. Not really sure how the Iridomyrmex colony is. I was tracking their progress for a few weeks after their release, but the area became overgrown and made it almost impossible to find them. Now I might just occasionally see some workers foraging, but there's really no way of telling whether they're are just ants from a different colony.

@JordanDeanFilms
@JordanDeanFilms 7 лет назад
Sorry, already passed them onto somebody else. They're really easy to collect yourself. Head to an area where you've seen them present on a warm sunny day, and start flipping some rocks. They don't nest very deep within the ground, so you'll likely find most of the colony exposed. Then just collect up some queens, workers and brood.

My local Argentine ants are ridiculous about their budding behavior. They're more than happy to bud 20 queens right into my kitchen trashcan every week. Horribly, this never seems to deplete their numbers, as they keep moving colony after colony into my potted plants.

you do these documentary quality videos all by yourself? Nice work :D only critique: when narrating you make some strange breaks and intonations (sometimes it almost sounds like you'd cut different parts of a sentence together in editing)
@JordanDeanFilms
@JordanDeanFilms 7 лет назад
Thanks! Yes, I do all the writing, narration, filming and editing myself. Everything except the music, which is by Kevin MacLeod. Yeah, I know what you mean and it bugs me too! Cutting isn't the issue, it's a problem with either my microphone or audacity. Records with wild spikes in audio, which makes the narration sound a bit unusual in places. I'm still a bit new to this...Hopefully I can resolve the issue for the next one.

Excuse me would you recommend a 11 and a half year old to start raising a Argentine colony because I have a natural colony in my backyard. I was just wondering

Priceless I sat no cause I had trouble trying to raid them at you're age they grow super fast and dosnt take long for them to hatch if you're lucky you might have some long term ones so I would say no

Hello there. I today got a package from overseas that had a small colony living in the electronics, with brood and a couple of queens. Naturally, as I had no idea what the species was, I made sure to contain them and destroy them. I posted about this in a group on the Facebook, and got so many comments saying I should just keep them, or that a single colony couldn't hurt. This got me very annoyed, repeating myself over and over about how our delicate ecosystem is already being threatened by invasive species, and often can't out compete them. One commenter saying I should keep them said I should have asked you for help in keeping them. So, here we go then, if you got a package like I did from overseas with a small colony inside it, ants you don't recognise, what would you do?

Did you just randomly get sent it? It could be to do with some sort of stupid trade so I'd probably freeze them if they'd been IDd as foreign.

Sorry, unless I get the chance to travel overseas and do some filming there, I'll be sticking to local Australian ants. Next one's on Sugar Ants (Camponotus spp.)

Hi! I'm thinking of buying a queen ant soon. I'm from Melbourne, Victoria and I was wondering the general area of where you live so I can see if you live too far away. Thanks!

what happens to the argentine ants if their nesting site is too small for them, and also what happens if the resources are too little?
