You guys who are newer to wet shaving are so lucky. Those of us who are bloated down with too much software find it harder to keep adding. Besides, your choices today are uniformly outstanding. I will have to enjoy it second hand from your excellent video.

A review such as your style of describing the product or item will definitely help to influence me to make the purchase I’ve watched reviews on A&E Peach and Cognac and have already decided to make the purchase prior to watching your video, with that said I’m looking forward to it arriving even more now you do a good job in your description some guys just breeze through the notes and don’t really get to the gist of what they smell, scent being subjective it really helps to get the best description of how the notes intermingle, some people are going to like it and some just won’t, thanks for another great review good sir like the razor also.

I love that soap. Sorry you got the tingling, I got that from another soap I tried the other day. It happens to me in about 1 in 50 soaps.

You know what I get hyped for? That notification of fresh Latherhog content. 😉 Hype is ever present. It will forever exist with new releases especially in the case of proven artisans. Very nice review, Jon! Sucks to have that tingling but sometimes you never know until you try something. Sounds like Peter has another winner on his hands!

Well said Jon. I know us youtubers and even Instagram accounts can be big influencers even in a small hobby like ours. Thats why I try to have a equal rotation of hype train products and smaller less known but equally good artisans who don't get the same love. If my limited influence is going to do anything, its going to point you in many directions so you have multiple good choices to choose from. Plus I don't like being on the hype train all the time. Its good to showcase old favorites that still perform well!

Hey DK, I'm totally with you there in that I like to showcase hidden gems or lesser known products when I can as well!

I agree. You don't see reviews much anymore on the darlings of 6 months ago. I really enjoy Oleo Soapworks for example. Great base, great scents but everyone is wanting to use the latest offerings. Let us not forget other great soaps.

You gotta love it when your approves of a shave scent! Win/win! I think hype will always be a part of this hobby. Hype also leads to FOMO, let's not forget that! I try to rely on some of the reviewers whose taste seem to parallel my own. I also think that I am more likely to be drawn into performance hype versus scent hype. While I enjoy the scents, if the performance isn't tops, I'm less likely to buy. Cheers! -Rob

FOMO, ah yes the iPhone. I agree about performance, scent is always secondary. I have extremely sensitive skin. If a soap irritates my skin, I'm not going to use it no matter how great it smells or how much hype there is with respect to a got to have product. As also with you, I too enjoy scents, especially those that at have a mild nose. The kind that pull you in as opposed to something that is in-your-face 5 feet away. The one aspect of hype I see as a positive is that it helps with product awareness. To be aware, gives us the opportunity to investigate and evaluate. That's what makes this hobby so great. So many products...too little coin. God bless, be safe and stay healthy.

Hype is fun. And I think our community is rarely “off” on saying whether a product is good or not. The caveat of a new soap making older soaps obsolete or inciting anxiety in those who can’t buy new soaps brings up the whole “why are you watching content on new products?” paradox. You do a great job and do influence my purchases. Keep up the good work🤙🏻

Thanks Ken, very true that the responsibility is ultimately up to the consumer themselves.

I use A&E pretty much exclusively nowadays. They make solid software and they actually can scale their product and keep things in stock. Peter always seems to be improving and club prices are decent. Kaizen really is a great base but I did notice I burn thru the soap a lot quicker than the old base since it's softer. Definitely easy to overload but not a big deal. I do find it odd people complain about scent strength being too strong I wish it was stronger especially in their Spartacus soap.
@Latherhog

I would count A&E among the strongest in scent strength among the American artisan soaps.

Great video. As for hype, I think it's what makes a lot of videos fun. Although I don't usually follow the hype, it's good to see people enjoy the products and the scents. But another side to it is that you don't need to follow the hype for a good shave. I find myself being indecisive about the new offerings because I already have plenty of good products to use. This consumerism aspect does deter me a bit from following the hype.

I like the honesty on a hyped up soap. Scent is always going to be subjective and personal and while I'll pay attention to the scent review I'm going to pay more attention to the performance of the soap base first and foremost. More scents will be released in a new base as time goes on. If the scent isn't up my alley that's fine, I'll wait for a scent I like to be made in that base. The Peach and Cognac sounds good to me but if I can get A&E NYC or SoCal Hipster in Kiazen base I'll wait. I think some reviews do not separate the scent from the performance. They need to be separate thoughts.
@Latherhog
@Latherhog 4 года назад
Thanks for sharing William, I think you COULD also argue that there's some subjectivity in how we rate soap performance. For example, a straight razor shaver is going to look for slickness more than anything, while a DE shaver might not value that as highly.

Hey Jon! One thing I’d like to mention is the FTC. Better known as the federal trade commission actually has regulation on this. No one ever mentions that. It is required of product was given free that is it stated as so. There ar many regulations on reviews actually and one more reason I don’t provide product for them
@Latherhog
@Latherhog 4 года назад
Great point Heather re: the FTC although I feel like it's the larger brands and companies that they're focused on regulating currently.

The artisan"s track record is my biggest influence on product purchase decisions. RU-vidrs provide awareness, but I see many products I don't have the desire to try. A prime example is today's soap... I really trust Peter's nose and seem to like a high number of his scents. Plus, I like original scents when the creation matches with fragrance profiles I like. Artisans not known to me usual get sample orders until I can evaluate first hand.

Marketing only goes so far. Some are better at creating branding & hype than others. All business owners want to get the word out on new releases and the hype builds upon itself if the product can back it up. If the product is mediocre or good, then the hype will subside very quickly. If the product is worthy of the hype, then the momentum continues by customers who are excited about their experience. One other thing I’ll add about ‘hype’. Most Artisans work from their home, part-time. Generally speaking they don’t have a marketing background nor do they have a budget for marketing. They rely on IG posts, FB posts, Reddit etc and hopefully good reviews. If a RU-vidr rated a soap among the best of the best and turns out that it was mediocre, that RU-vidr would and should lose all credibility. I’m not aware of anyone over-hyping a soap.

Thanks Keith! For me, I am coming to like my Tatara Masamune more than my Karve with the C plate, mostly based on the fact that I find it smoother yet still plenty efficient. That being said, I'm not getting rid of the Karve any time soon!

For the viewer, perception is everything. In this hobby, since we buy our stuff without seeing it first or smelling it first, we need honest review of product. The holly graal for a viewer is finding someone who likes exactly the same scent has me. This someone should have about the same age as me, should have facial hair that has the same caracteristic as mine, should live in the same climate, should have the same budget.... so you see when this imaginary friend tells me a product is good anf smell great, there is no risk, and I’ll never be disapointed when I follow my friend suggestion... Now you know what I mean by holly graal. So we have to listen too numerous review of the same product to compile a certain amount of data that help us take a decision. (The problem is too often the product is already sold out before you can make a choice, but that is another topic for another time). For me as long as I think that someone who is creating content is honest I take is intake as an opinion, that helps me make a good choice and for that I’m gratefull. The problem for the content creator is that honesty is a very subjective thing. You can do everything right disclose every information. Sometimes for a reason that you can’t understand (even sometimes unjustly) someone can decide to not trust you. It must be difficult for you guys. That is why I’m always gratefull that you and all your comrades are there. Again Thank you for having the courage to be out there and be expose.

Thanks for watching and making some really great points as far as how to watch review videos. And I totally know what you mean by find a holy grail and because its nearly impossible to find all that in one person, when I do research for a product that I'm interested in, I'll watch a handful of channels that I trust to steer me in the right direction.
