After the deep freeze over night I head lower in altitude carrying a lot of ice. Will it all thaw or am I carrying ice for nothing?

Hearing those chainsaws in the desert brings back memories. I spent a season cutting down tamarisk trees all over Arizona. Good times!

The tree with the funky bark is an Alligator Juniper. When you get into the Superstition Mountains, a bit before Reevis Ranch, the trail passes by a huge one. The new for you cactus is a Hedgehog Cactus. When I hiked the AZT, I camped in Sunnyside Canyon around mile 16 near the stream you mention. It's fun for me to see this section of the trail again as it's been several years since I was there. Thanks for sharing.

Don’t know if your checking in the comments of the AZ, but a thought come to me that mat be useful fir the chilly AT. If your bladder is frozen in AM, take a hand warmer packet, wrap it up around with and insulator and place in pack. Don’t use clothing because of condensation, but in and hour you may find it’s water again. Maybe silver bubble wrap, that you just roll up around it. Could save you some trouble. Stay warm. 20°won’t be too bad, but I would not like single digits. coldest night for me was -15°f.

Yeah anytime there is negative F temp weather forecast I may wait it out. Those trail runners are just no good for that.

That tree is called an alligator juniper due to its scale like bark. Thanks for filming your trip. I’m itching to be on trail, I start late March. Best of luck on your adventure! Keep it up.

Wow that's impressive how cold it gets, I wonder if would it have made a difference if you stuck the water bottles in a wool sock, or a battery wool sock to keep it from icing up at night, also was wondering what kind of food bag you're using and where or how do you store it at night to keep it from the critters? Since it gets too cold at night I doubt that any spiders or scorpions would be out at this time of the year? Learning a lot about your adventures on the Arizona trail that hopefully do it someday namaste bro

The tree with the funny bark that you mention at 9:30 is the appropriately named alligator juniper. Easy to remember once you have that image in your mind!

like your Hyperlite cuzy bag. It looks like your foot print is Cuban fiber, like to see how you like it later, rocks and needles . I was thinking it would be good frost protection during cowboy camping if long enough for top and bottom. Snakes might like that too. :). neat tree. Man you are a young guy still, go to bed early and sleep only till 4. I go to bed late and I am up at 12:30, then 2, then 4:30 , on an on. enjoy that while you can. Yes, I was thinking the water would melt easier in the rays some, hard to do if no outside netting on pack. Oh, that was nice the tub had an animal ramp. stay warm 👍

"Nucleation" -- I'm going to have to look that up! That is cool! ... Well, cool until you want to eat!! ... But I've heard a meteorologist say that 32F isn't the _freezing_ temperature of water, but the _melting_ temperature of ice! -- I've got me some science to learn!! -- Anyway, thanks for showing that!!

Hilairious, that you walked by cows an didn't even see them! you sort of have me worried now! hopefully there's no bears on the AZ trail!
@russellinthebush2897

There are bears in the Huachuca Mountains which is where Jay's first nights camp was. It's bear territory over a lot of the AZT.
