Is there anything along this trail that doesn't stick you or bite you? That is if you don't get burned by the sun first? 😉 Amazing landscape!

That's the 'hate' part of the love-hate relationship I have with this trail. Unique, beautiful place that wants desperately to hurt me.

I’m curious David. How are you managing your food with the desert varmints on these sections of the AZ? The southern sections also reminds me of the desert trips I do in west Texas and even with bears we had to just sleep with our food bags due to the lack of trees.

Well, these are times when there's no other option but to break the rules... in a calculated way. I use "odor proof" bags in a well sealed stuff sack and sleep with my food (GASP!) inside my buttoned up tent. No bears here. Coyotes are too skittish to tear into a tent where a human is - obviously some very rare exceptions (like with all animal behavior). It's important to keep a deterant barrier or two to keep rodents and other crawly things away. But, without trees and bears, reducing odors and creating a barrier (which is why David doesn't cowboy camp) I found is a pretty good method. I've also had times above treeline in the mountains, where there are bears, that I either slept with my food or I tied a ur sack around some big rocks. In these cases, just like you have, we need to do the best we can in any given circumstance with some good knowledge about animal behavior.

@@DavidonEarth Yes. I’ve never had issues with coyotes. I feel you’ve hit on a good point. Knowledge of animal behavior. I’m a planning nerd and find it very useful and somewhat calming, to do the research on what critters one is likely to deal with along a planned hike and their behaviors. I’ve hiked before using a bear canister in Colorado for above tree line use but I’ve settled on the Ursack/Opsack option for the CT and do my best to avoid high use areas to camp. It’ll be my first time to use an Ursack in Colorado.

@@tangenttrails haha... I'm the same way. A thousand years ago, when I was in the Air Force doing clandestine training in AZ, I learned all about the critters out there and how to avoid a bad day. Came in handy. Your Plan for the CT is right on.
