I'm 70 now... been singing that song on my motor cyc-le since I come home from 'Nam and bought my first real scooter. My dog sings it with me sometimes. Added a verse.. I don't want to play my fiddle... I just want to ride my motor cyc-le. If you are still alive stay safe and see you on the other side.
I'm 45. I've been singing this song since I was a kid. My daughter is 20. She's been singing this song since she was 5. My nephew is 5. He says he'd rather have a pickle than a motorcycle (gonna have to work on that).... As the son of a Vietnam vet, Welcome home brother.
I've been singing this song since i was a knee high. Just got thru refreshing my moms memory with playing the whole album here on youtube. She's still got her old record album but no turn table to play it on, well, actually we do have a turn table, just dont have a needle for it. I was able to find one for it at Radio Shack way back in the early 90's and worried that i might not be able to find one again so i bought 2 of the turn table needles. Guess i should have asked them how many of them needles they had in stock, because for the last 20 plus years that poor turn tables just been sitting there praying it doesnt get tossed. Pretty sure they dont make old dinasour needles anymore. Bummer.
Yes, we shall cross the Wash'K'Happy river on a chariot pulled by a Herd of Hoogally Hampsters. All praises to the Lord Roscoe who has died and returned 17 times!
I was at this event. It was a benefit for the Worthington (Massachusetts) Health Care Center. Guest included Steve Goodman, who was great. I shot 4 rolls of film (I'm in the brown shirt center stage, ground level) that day. I was a junior in high school from Chicopee, Mass., looking to get into a photo journalism career, and attend a college like Hampshire, or the New York School of Arts, ... not to forget Suffolk University in Boston. I like so many of this period, didn't see it materialize. I'll be 64 years old in 6 months, ... have a factory job, trying to find a way I can semi retire early. The one thing I DO HAVE after all these years, are the negatives, all 136 frames I shot that day, in B&W with my 35mm Nikkormat camera. All are in mint condition, in my present darkroom. So are the best laid plans of mice and men. For those of you who have a desire to venture, go for it. Go for it and accomplish your desire> Don't turn into a somewhat old man with regrets, looking for old memories on You-Tube!Peace to you all.
Because NOBODY in the history of mankind has anyone EVER said "I don't want a pickle". Well there are a handful of idiots in the world that don't like a pickle!
I used to ride on the back of my father's Harley at 8 years old with this song blasting through the speakers. Im 44 years old now so I know exactly what you mean.
This was my grandfather’s favourite song. He would blast it on his old record player! Every time I think of him I play this song. I just love it! Now I play it to my kids.
I am 63. Fourty years ago I was on a dangerous hike in the Himalayas silly enough during the monsun season. On my way an American from Atlanta Georgia joined me. Trying to get back Alice we kept on sinnig a changed Version of Arlos song: ".... I dont wanna die, I just want to keep my feet dry...." The Song kept us in a good mood to get through all hardship... thank you Arlo, 40 years later...
This is not even a song. It's an anthem. I was twelve when this came out. I bought my first bike two years later and have been riding ever since. Thanks Arlo. And Dylan and Fonda and Hopper.
I've been riding since I was a teen also. Started with dirt bikes. On April 23, 2015. My sister called me. I had stored my bike at her place in her garage while I recovered from open heart surgery. She called me to tell me her truck spontaneously caught fire and took my prized 1976 BMW R90/6 motorcycle with it. Motorcycling was my life! Even in the rain! Same day, April 23rd 2015, she called me later again that my dad died! One month before, March 23, 2015 my mom had died and the following month in May my dog of 16 years had died as well. I now can no longer ride anymore physically because of my back. Simple Twist of Fate!
I respectfully disagree with the last point you make: LEAVE ARLO ALONE ... don't team him up with anyone else. He is by no means interchangeable with any other rugged individual and is best regarded INDIVIDUALLY. That just spoils the song and his own unique gestalt. If rlo had any message at all, it was to be who we are. We all must draw our own associations, not be grouped as "These folks think alike." That's a slippery slope, though it doesn't appear to be that at first. Arlo is who he is because he always stood alone and liked it that way. His whole gig was being an individual, belonging to no club, and so answerable to none of the subtle but inevitable taboos, conventions and expectations that come with belonging to someone's idea of the "in crowd." We are not a crowd .. we are individuals. No need to go further ... heck certainly not with THIS song!! If we like other individuals, their actions (or songs) will speak for themselves. It's better to avoid equating people. It's tempting, but it's a mistake, because we'll never get a consensus that means anything, and it eventually leads to dissension ... and that isn't the effect Arlo had in mind when he wrote this silly sensational, god will song. PEACE ...
I started listing to Arlo's songs from the beginning. Now here I am 66 years old and your still playing your songs like it was yesterday. If people could understand what your singing about. All those years ago and your still hanging in with the best of them.
@Gary Bross Neat how the world works. I’m 26 and I’ve grown to love Arlo’s music because of a Canadian western artist by the name of Colter Wall that was inspired by this song and wrote his own. I saw him live a few years back and his song “motorcycle” is truly a treat for the ears. Real western music from a kid my age. Worth a listen.
very cool guy ! saw him at 7 years old .. with Pete .. what great times .. thank you my older brother for bringing me to all those great show ...Pete S. & Puff the Magic Dragon P-P&Mary .. what time to be alive !!! and have a Big Brother ..
I remember before helmets just swinging a leg over my Honda and going. My long hair blew back like a wind sock and I wore cheap sunglasses. The road curved uphill around the reservoir and i leaned into it. I parked by the dam and smoked a joint while the bike ticked and clicked cooling off.
"Now you listen to me, Aaron. You don't blow your money on those comic books, you understand? They don't do you a damned bit of good, and the nude mags, you're gonna be inheriting mine when you're 16 anyway. Now look, the junk food and the candy just rots your teeth, gives you bad breath, and the girls run like hell. Stay the hell away from buying any rock TV shirts, or hip hop gear, or anything like that. Arcade games, pick out one that you can do, okay? ONE that you can do as opposed to a whole bunch of them that you don't know what the hell you're doing. Techno music just puts a hole in your brain - are, are you listening to me? Look at me when I'm talking to you!"
Saw Arlo in concert in the Dallas area in the early 80's . Was probably the third youngest in the crowd. Small venue. One of the best concerts I've ever been to. Incredible show.
I originally saw this at the State University of New York at Stony Brook in the late 1960's. He was the feature act. Flatt and Scruggs were the warmup. Crowd was 30% bluegrass elder types. the rest hippies. it was awesome. so cool that he has been able to sing it for these decades.
This song reminds me of 5th grade. I had a teacher who was the quintessential “nerd” but he introduced our class to this song. I’d never heard it before or even since then, but I will never forget this song.
That's so wonderful to know, I'm glad I have been able to impress the entire family with my creative art. Tell me what's your favorite song from all of my songs you have listened to?
Sounds good, thank you very much for your lovely words, I really do appreciate it. Tell me what's your favorite album from all of my albums you have listened to so far?
I've sung this song for years..sang to my then girlfriend now wife..to my children to make them giggle and go to sleep.till n ow I never heard the original. Thank you for so many smiles hugs and good night daddys.
My dad used to sing this to me when I was little. Now I sing it and play this video for my baby boy who just turned a month old. No matter how cranky he is this song calms him down.
Ive saved this mp4 on multiple hardrives cos im scared it will one day be deleted from youtube and lost to the ether. This song deserves to be preserved as an example of human culture.
Brings back memories...about a Honda Dream that once belonged to the artist that created the controversial metal sculpture above the Hip Pocket book store. Me and my brother got it running for an old buddy...a West Sider from Bay View School...Naturally we all had to road test it...Needless to mention we were smoking imported herbs at the time and experienced no concept of speed...the road scenery seemed to be moving pretty quickly though.
Mark Farrell --stunning photography, thanks for sharing the link! Arlo has great songwriting & storytelling skills. A very peaceful, life-affirming mantra is his “Meditation-Wave Upon Wave.”
@@markfarrell6810 Thank you. Ive been wondering what he's been up to these days. Haha, got a big jar full of pickles in one picture. Makes perfect sense. Lol.
i'm putting this in my playlist of, all time hits, and songs that are meaningful to me, just because. arlo, arlo, arlo, you are so unique. so glad you got away with this. i'm planning to have this list played at my funeral service. i hope the crowd appreciates it.
Haha. Thank you very much for your lovely words I really do appreciate it. Tell me which is your favorite albums from all of my albums you have listened to so far?
I’m 15, I just found out about this man, I really like his music and stories. I also just found out he’s coming to my town in about a week, which is sad because it’s already sold out. That was pretty disappointing. Maybe I’ll get another chance to see him sometime.
Arlo was one of my late father’s favourite musicians. My dad also rode motorcycles. He would take me and my sister for rides on the back of his bike. He introduced us to this song when we were little kids, in the late seventies. We both got our love of motorcycles and Arlo from our dad. This song and the story make me laugh every time!
NOW, I can eat my jar of Pickles, I have been hanging on to so dearly all these years.. Since 1967, they should be DEEEEEE - Licious ! ! ! Thanx, Arlo !
I'm playing this for my four year old while she learns to ride her bike. Whenever i'd sing this in my head as a kid, i always amended it to/squeezed in 🎶i don't want a pickle (yes i do!)...🎶.
I wrote a song of mine here in Italy about my motorcycle called "at the side of the road". Mountains of my left seaside of my right, campers trailer i'm ridiing my motorcycle great emotion from a song in a summer of music in a summer of love...GREAT
Just got home from my solo motorcycle ride through the hills behind Malibu and goddamn; this song is like “finishing it off with a tall cool Budweiser”
I saw Arlo once - around 1968. It was after the Alice's Restaurant sensation had swept the country. I believe he had come out with Arlo, which was a really outstanding album. Some of his more obscure music is just phenomenal. anyway, I saw him at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. Flatt and Scruggs were the opening act. Arlo the close. You had a mixed audience - people in their 50's and older and people 15-25. I was in the 2nd category. He can really enterain.
@@arloguthrie7579 Alice's Restaurant my favorite 😋 Gosh that was so kind of you to respond thank you. In 1978 I dated a guy that rode a motorcycle he loved the Motorcycle Pickle song we listened to it over and over. I'm sixty one now and can't believe how the time has raced by. I love all of your music.
I never heard the name arlo Guthrie. I've heard some of his songs. I seen him on Renegade and something told me he's a musician, he had done something. So, I looked up 1960's bands, no good, looked up the byrds, no good, then I looked up Renegade. Bingo! Now I know his name! I love the songs I already knew. I've got to know more of them now. I think he is awesome!!!!
Gee, Arlo, how you gonna fit in, singing free like that? Hmmm ... funny, but you clearly fit in just FINE!!! Bless you always, brother - Yours truly, Bold Robert Emmett, Woodstock alumnus
The Guthrie family are a cultural treasure that the United States has yet to fully embrace and accept. The updated release of Alice's Restaurant talking about Carter's Inauguration when Clinton was elected reinforces his contributions to the political and social issues of the era.
My first motorcycle was in 1966 Harley Davidson XLCH also known as a sportster, 900, right about the time I heard this song for the first time I had already bought my 1963 Panhead with a 1948 frame, since then,
yes, it was amazing a song like this could provide so much money for an entertainer and such fun for those entertained; some people just hit the window at the right time
Thank you very much for your lovely words, I really do appreciate it. Tell me what's your favorite album from all of my albums you have listened to so far?
