Nope. Harvey Addik trew 12 perfect inning in 1959 But he lose the perfect game the no hitter. The shutout and finally the game in the 13 inning😳🤔he retire. the first 36. Batters in order (The inperfect masterpiece)
Another ironic fact about this game: Jim Joyce is from Toledo and attended BGSU. He more than likely grew up a Tigers fan, as Toledo has long been linked to the Tigers due to its close proximity to Detroit and being home to their AAA team, the Mud Hens. You have to think he also received the wrath from his friends back home for this blowing this call.
It was a perfect game. It might not be in the books, but everyone knows that last call was bullshit. It was pretty obvious that the runner was 2 steps away from the bag when miggy got the ball in his glove. I remember watching the last 3 innings of the game as a kid. I was in bed sleeping and my dad woke me up on a school night to watch it. When that runner was called safe I freaked out, I cried and threw a huge tantrum because I have Armando's autograph.
Jim Joyce’s conduct after the game though should be commended. He said he got it wrong and apologized. He was always respected as one of MLB’s better umps. Just a really bad mistake. But good on Jim for owning up to it and showing class.
Jim Joyce also missed on a call in the bottom of the 8th to allow the tigers to score 2 runs. Johnny Damon should have been out. This guy was asleep at the wheel that night
I noticed that too. He definitely overthought that. Nobody brings it up and he himself should have acknowledged that. That's what makes even worse. He did know he was out.
Joyce was blinded by ego. He was geared up to show the world that he's a great umpire unswayed by the emotions of the moment and that he won't just hand a pitcher a perfect game, he'll call a runner safe to kill a perfect game if that runner barely beats the throw. He wanted that glory. Instead he made a clown of himself.
@@mattlv2002 ^^^^ this!! Every one says “he’s a true man cause he owned up to it and took accountability” Well what’s he supposed to do?? Deny the replay? You’re exactly right.
@@mattlv2002 What the fuck are you saying? He was consistently ranked as one of the best umpires and he even apologized to Galarraga after the game. He gets emotional when people bring it up to him.
He would have joined Addie Joss on the perfect game with the fewest number of strikeouts (3) and the second fewest number of pitches (83) since Addie Joss (74). Batting is better than it ever has been, so we may never never again see 24 bats making contact with the ball and resulting in no hits. The Tigers fielding was also impeccable. MLB need to rewrite this wrong. It's particularly egregious because he was an otherwise average pitcher having the greatest day of his career.
You can tell how much respect that ump has. Because everyone is saying, “it happens and it’s a human mistake” I just know other umps like angel people will say, “he’s pure garbage”
He missed an easy call in the bottom of the 8th to allow the tigers to score 2 runs. Johnny Damon was clearly out. Jim Joyce was asleep at the wheel that night
I do not blame the Tigers players for getting in Joyces face after the game. You can not just let something like that go. How many times does any pitcher put themselves in to position for a perfect game? It is so damn rare. I credit Jim Joyce for admitting that he messed up after the game but man that is a historic blown call.
credit him joyce for admitting he messed up? let´s see... jim joyce rapes your 9 year old daughter and he admits it..... give him credit???? jesus christ!
Good repeat and great to hear Mario and Rod again. God I miss em so much. Wish they'd reconcile one of these days. Worst commentators ever: Kirk Gibson, Joe Buck, George Blaha, Greg Kelser, Jason Strayhorn, Ken "The Hawk" Harrelson, Fred McLeod, Austin Carr, Marv Albert, Brent Musburger, Chris Fowler, Kirk Herbstreit, Ralph Lawler, Grant Napear, and Mike "Doc" Emerick. Best commentators ever: Ken Daniels, Mickey Redmond, Mario Impemba, Rod Allen, Neil Funk, Stacey King, Gary Thorne, Bill Clement, Al Michaels, Cris Collinsworth, Don Orsillo, Dave O'Brien, Dennis Eckersley, Jerry Remy, Pat Hughes, Ron Coomer, Len Kasper, Jim Deshaies, Bill Land, Sean Elliot, Bob Fitzgerald, Jim Barnett, Frank Beckmann, Jim Brandstatter, Dan Dierdorf, Johnny Most, Chick Hearn, Joel Meyers, Bill Macdonald, and Stu Lantz.
Youre absolutely insane if you think Doc emerick is a bad commentator. And especially since you let Pierre McGuire off that last cause Doc over pierre? No way. Hockey will never be the same without him
I think I saw this with my mom. I remember that it was on STO. What did Matt and Rick say after Crowe was retired to end the game again? I believe that Manny Acta felt bad too.
by getting 27 outs in a row through nine defensive innings, without allowing a batter to reach a base in any way. and a pitcher cannot reasonably achieve it without his infield and outfield
Anyone else happen to notice that Joyce made another bad call prior to that last one? Watch Johnny Damon's at bat in the 8th inning about the 1:09:20 mark. Joyce calls Damon safe. Replay shows he was out by half a step. Watch the reactions of the guys in the Indians' dugout. Surprisingly, the Indians don't argue the call. Tigers go on to score two more runs. Could that call have affected Joyce's thought process on what should have been the 27th out in the 9th? Make up call?
Just to play devil’s advocate here… When Miggy fields the ground ball to his side, he sort of hesitates to throw to first. Not excusing Joyce here, but had Cabrera thrown to first a split second sooner, the play is obviously an out.
I've always been annoyed at the announcers when they say" it's over" no dude. I'm sick of that nonsense. It wasn't a blown call it was blown history. They had every right to irate. One of the worst calls in sports history.
I don't get it. Why would the 1B umpire choose to call the runner safe when he was out ? It wasn't even that close. This is the major leagues, that's a routine play. Might as well make the correct call, no ?
Ball was right too the second baseman. If Cabrera would have just went to first and covered and let the second baseman take it that’s probably a perfect game
