Armbar from Guard for Bigger Slower People (Be Tighter)

Developing the speed for an Armbar can be tough if you're a bigger guy in BJJ.
That's the situation that sparked today's question.
Our friend is a large man (6'3 234lbs) and he is unable to turn his hips quickly for the Armbar from the Guard.
In this video I show my preferred method for the basic Armbar from Full Guard in Brazilian Jiujitsu.
My big focus is on keeping tight control rather than relying on speed.
I've found that being a Heavyweight in BJJ. Having the tight control allows to lack a little extra speed with the hips.
1 caveat to this is that I encourage any larger grappler to work on their speed from the bottom. The reason being is that if they become quick from the bottom, it's a weapon that most bigger guys do not have.
So if you're a bigger person in BJJ. I hope this basic armbar from Guard is helpful. And also, continue to work on your speed and hip movement so that it improves.
Talk to you guys next time!

Your videos helped inspire me to get out and rolling again. Wrestled for 14 years and coached wrestling for 2years, but I haven't done any combat sports or martial arts in almost 10 years now. Did my first day of training last night, and I can feel every muscle that I have neglected since high school screaming at me.

Related question: How do you catch and retain the arm without brute-forcing it? I struggle as much with that as I do with the hip movement. Most people at my level or higher know to either keep their hands safe, or are very fast to retrieve them.

6'5, 355lbs - thanks for sharing this and the advice! Also, just curious: Why grab the shoulder and not the lapel? I'm still learning the mechanics of all of this, so that's why I'm asking.
@ronnymo501
@ronnymo501 5 лет назад
No-gi applicability probably, and/or to go easy on the fingers. The lapel grip also gives more information and locks your hand in. I'm pretty sure there is another layer or two to it, but those jumped out at me.

Do you think a arm bar would work in a street fight? Some guys in the moment or under the influence of some kind of narcotics won't stop them. isn't it better to transition to arm bar to triangle . If you watch Frank MIr Vs Tim Silva Tim Silva was still trying to slam out of it . He didn't even know it was broken. I worked at a furniture store and my Co worker had a lazy boy fall on his head he blocked it he assumed he sprained his arm. A week later he went to the doctor they said it was a complete break. So he worked a week before even realizing it was broken. Didn't Forrest Griffin win a fight with a broken arm?

@oneshadowdragon
@oneshadowdragon 5 лет назад
@@timproc9355 just assuming? I'd go for a triangle over an arm bar any day just to be safe. I just don't believe an arm bar would physical stop every attacker. Not everyone responds to pain the same.

@@Crystals10000 this is how I see it, if you are in a situation where you need to defend yourself, go for whatever's available, and if it doesn't work, you're now in a position where you have more control over the person so you can more easily find a more dominant position

It is at this point in my jiu jitsu development that I find out that as a big guy (6'4, 270) I am not built for a guard game. I wish I knew this a few months ago, but it explains my stunning lack of success with it. What are the best games for big, slower guys? I am definitely going to work on those hip drills. This is where having a girlfriend who trains and mats at home will come in handy.
@danielcho3270
@danielcho3270 5 лет назад
In my opinion, DON'T give up on the guard game. Its so darn important in higher levels. The movements and concepts keep coming up when trying fancier control positions and attacks. To, me, it seems like the guys who struggled and became comfortable with guard game earlier in their journeys are the higher evel belts that are really really good and slick. Good luck.
