In this video Chris and I fence with longswords; me wearing a very early 15th century harness, him wearing modern HEMA gear and simulating no armor. Neither of us have done harnischfechten before, but have experience with HEMA out of armor (which is why we didn't use a lot of harness techniques; sorry for that). This is mostly experimental. We are only counting hits to soft targets and pommel strikes to the head and such.

That spinning backfist to the temple was great.

Strange how the unarmoured fighter was using a standard short point a lot yet the armoured fighter used half-swording stance at times. Shouldn't it be the other way around? I mean the armoured man is against no armour and the unarmoured man is against armour. I dunno, I've not tried harnischfechten before either.

Medieval Genie It would make sense to fight that way, and that’s what I expected would happen in our sparring. Turns out my main opening (my abdomen/groin) didn’t really demand my opponent use halfswording. Plus an armored man is much safer using the shortened range of halfswording than an unarmored man is.

The armor appears to be in the 14th century more so than the 15th century. 15th century armor is known for using arming doublets with voiders rather than a thick gambeson, and 15th century armor typically included faulds and tassets as part of the cuirass. 15th century armor would also include a backplate. However the armor worn looks completely historical and perfect for the 14th century.

Great points! As this armor exists now (which I haven't shown on the channel for a while) it is in the 1415-1420 time frame, in the English style. But even here the reason I dated it for early 15th century is because of the visor of the bascinet (from Churburg, dated to c. 1400) and the fact that it's worn with spaulders (putting it in the first decade of the 15th century in Italy). But you are quite correct. I will have to make an overview of my harness on the channel soon.

@@Ralchire cool an overview of the harness would be fun. I am just starting to learn about 15th english armor recently and it would be neet to learn more. All I know is mostly about the Northern Italian Armor, The Gothic style of armor, and the Italian export armors of the late 15th century. I feel like many content creators don't often discuss about the other armor styles during the 15th century time period.
