This slim weapon was quickly embraced by Italian fighters for its agility and speed. The art of combat with these stiff thrusting blades was quite deadly. The fully swept hilt protected the hand, a primary target, when fighting in the streets or a duel. The three side rings on the foreguard are complimented by a four bar inner guard and a faceted barrel-shaped pommel. The wire-bound grip allows a firm grip that any Italian swordman would consider essential. From 1600 to 1640 this type of rapier was, arguably, the most popular style made. There are many illustrations in art and surviving examples in museums and collections. The blade is a quarter inch thick at the hilt and distal tapers to an authentic point and edge. Features a sharpened carbon steel blade, solid steel guard and pommel, and wire wrapped grip.

I can tell you what I don't like about that blade... the price.

Arms and Armor make swords that are maybe 20% nicer than an equivalent Windlass, at Albion prices (their Erbach is not as nice as the Windlass). There is no sword-maker that can hope to take the "worst value for cost" prize than Arms and Armor. Buy a Windlass Rapier.

Gotta be honest, the way you approached the camera man there at the beginning made me think you were about to take him out.

If you want a no-frills type of rapier treatise to study that has a large amount of illustration and original plates, check out Nicoletto Giganti's manuals. His work was created to teach non-nobility to fence and wanted to educate the populace over the rich. Most of his techniques allow for a strike to land in 1-3 moves, when performed properly. This comes from a fencer of 5+ years who teaches Olympic sport fencing at a local university as well as performs historical fencing/dueling at renaissance fairs across the mid-western US.

the purpose of the cross guard, at least from the limited treatise work that I did a few years ago, was used to lock and bind your opponent's blade. You could gain control of their blade, or counterthrust their attack, and with a slightly rotation of your wrist, you could "pinch" their blade between the side of your blade and the quillon, effectively preventing them from using their sword in any offensive way.

Elswares Props no that’s not how rapier fencing works.

as a fencer, i find it hilarious you think that, they are to stop the opponents blade hitting your hand, also they looked fancy because they were a sign of class, so the fancier the hilt the higher your standing in society

@@kevinmorrice I agree, the complex hilt of a rapier does prevent the opponent's blade from striking your hand. I was referring more specifically to the quillons themselves with my original comment. While a status symbol to be sure, I have found that sword designs served very specific purposes as well. In some of the Giganti work I did, there were moves that involved gaining control of your opponent's blade, catching it between your quillon and blade "pinching" it, making it highly difficult for your opponent to withdraw his blade, while your own point was in line for a thrust.

Imagine putting a mirror polish on that guard. That would be breath taking. I would polish it, then force a patina on it. Yeah.

Very beautiful! I am interested in getting a rapier that has a cross guard on it, perhaps this is the one for me. Please review more swords from Arms and Armor! They seem like they make very high quality swords and maybe the highest quality production rapiers on the market. They are a Minnesotan company of my home state. Chances are I'll be buying some of their products some day.
