$35 for a high and tight! Dang. My barber was $16, so $35 seems outrageous. Yeah. Save that money. For 30 minutes or less of your time, I think it’s worth it. Best of luck.
Very sharp ... comes to mind ... retired H/stylish ...once buzzed, stayed with it ever since even entering my seventh decade ..conceals crown thinning as well ... gotten away from heavy gels too living in the Tropics You know the feeling ..first 24 hrs tish short next 48 just right... only to be too long again by day five !! 😄
@@TheNonnell Your thoughts .... because I have a large forehead ( another way for saying generous head ) don't use clippers over comb ... better with straight finger positions ... lk trimming bang area ... recession sides can be tricky... one's always thinner .. right, found also because I've done this so long many is the time trim where needed my sides are always the first to go ... whereas the crown as you know using Clippers in a forward motion, guard of choice reduces amount taken off .... this way summer in Tor or winter in Bim ... feathers are good to go !!😎
My husband is retired Army, always Army. He was wearing h&t before he went active duty and now his civilian barber who just knew what he wanted, has retired. So here we are, going to try this, thanks!
Ah cool! It took me a few tries when I started cutting my own hair, but now it's easy and about 20-30 minutes. I'm trying to see if my wife will cut it and knock off some of the time. She seems hesitant. :) Thanks for the comment and thanks for his service!
Dude, you made it look easy. I also have been cutting my hair since the pandemic started and my style of choice is the flattop. I don't have the fancier clippers that cut really close to the skin; but, I have a standard Wahl Homepro clipper, a smaller Wahl trimmer (which I was hoping it'd do a closer cut to the skin), and a wide comb to style my cut. What I don't haveis a leveled flatop comb. Like yourself, I've saved myself $20-25 instead of going to the local barber. Ironically, Barber is my last name... so looks like I'm living up to it after all.😁💈
Ha. Thanks! It took years of cutting my hair, mainly as a poor college student, to learn the style. This isn’t a plug, but I use the manscape trimmers to get the close cut. They work really well and for not a lot of money. Great job on the haircut and keep up the good work. Thanks for sharing!
I got the oster fast feeds, and the Andis t outliner and foil shaver….I was just like you using a decent wahl clipper with nothing else back in the day….now I get that super close barber fresh bald fade… about $100 for each clipper but worth it man
I like it. Ive seen other old school barbers do this exact same way. They take it all the way up with a slight taper on the curve of the headm, instead of setting guidelines and fading.
I agree. I'm not a fan of a fade or high fade as some people like to do. I've tried to explain it to a few barbers before, but they continue with a fade and I end up not liking the cut and never go back.
Thanks for putting this together. I'm always nervous about the back of my head because I can't see back there, but this looks pretty easy. Going to try it out. Also the High and Tight suits you.
You're very welcome! Also, I typically use a hand mirror or my phone to check the back of my head to make sure it's even. A little practice and you'll be a pro. Thanks for the comment!
Wow! You look very handsome with that haircut! I’ve always had a thing for very handsome Military Men, in all Branches of The Service! Anyway, you look very handsome! You really do!
Thanks for the video. That is a nice haircut and exactly like I used to have mine. I decided to go shorter, though, and now have a #1 guard on top with shaved sides and back. I prefer it shorter, but yours looks great.
@@TheNonnell I sometimes cut my own and sometimes go to a barber. I like to have it cut every week to 10 days, so it's not always convenient to go to a barber--especially when traveling (which I've not done for the past 6 months!). During the lockdown, I cut my own and kept it sharp. But now I'm using the barber more. It's a good look, I think.
That's awesome. The last time I saw my barber was March. There are many factors for that, but as things normalize I will be happy to put the responsibility of cutting my hair back in his hands.
@@TheNonnell Ha....well, you do a great job on your hair. Very well done. For myself, I prefer shorter, but you do a great job. I'd definitely let you cut mine! But there is something relaxing about going to the barber. We guys don't get must "catering to." The barber does that a bit. LOL
😆 thanks! I’m enjoying my hair for sure. I have a bit of a receding hairline, but so far the bulk has remained. I’ve shaved my head a few times in my life so if I ever get to that point I’m prepared. I have a full beard now as well. It used to be dark orange/red but now the grey has swooped it. I guess that’s life, so I just roll with the changes. Thanks for the comment!
Ok, it's done! Took me an hour, but I got thru it and this monstrous cow 🐄 lick on the front and back of my head! Only uses a #2 on the sides, and a 3/4" guard on the top that I cut front to back... At least my wife thinks it's ok and not really wonky! I had an entirely new clippers with the Flippy thing on the side and all the guards from #1 - #8 in there so it wasn't hard to try n pin everything down. Used a #3 to try and blend the top and the sides in too. Some pomade in the morning and I should be good to go. I'll try n tag u on Instagram later or figure out a way on here... Thanks for the lessons and the confidence !!
That’s awesome! I know what you mean about the cow lick. I have one in front and back as well. Congrats. It’ll only get better with time and practice. Looking forward to seeing the results.
Knew you had to be in the Army. I've been following your builds an noticed the Tan T. Great videos! With your build series this should be a pretty big channel in no time!
Haha. Yeah. They issue a lot of those shirts, so I use them for all project/work tasks around my house. The LX has been challenging, but fun. Also, plenty more videos of the Xterra and Camry to come. More projects in the works. Thanks for the support!
I use a Wahl number 7 all over, then go down in concentric rings with a number 5 at the top edges, then down to a 4, 3 and even 2 as I get close to the ears......I also use the Wahl ear guards one left and one right......gives me a really nice short businessman's pompadour.
I don't bother with barbers these days. They rarely cut my hair as I want it. Doing it myself means I get the cut I want, not what they want. It's really not that difficult.
I agree. Although, I really enjoy my barber, he is 45 min away and I don’t feel it’s worth it with covid restrictions. To your point though, all other barber’s nearby are horrible at cutting my hair. Now that I cut it, every two weeks I get it exactly how I want.
My kind of hair cut before I was in military and now like it short. Do basically the same haircut only I like a modified flat top with slightly round edges. Short as I can cut the top and make it appear somewhat of a flat top
Oh yes! Quick, easy, no maintenance. I used to have a similar haircut to what you're describing when I was younger. The Army changed my haircut slightly and I've stuck with it since.
well I watched it is it possible to do this with beard trimmers cause that is all I have access to I tend to trim my fathers beard when it gets too over grown cause he has to use a cpap at night. But the last time we took him to sports clips he complained about the survice so I decided if I was able to learn this haircut I make my father happy as well as save mom a little money.
Yeah. I use manscape trimmers. Usually, they’re designed for beards and private areas. Mine came with two guards with two sizes on each guard. That’s all I use now to cut my hair. It’s totally doable. It may take some trial and error if this is your first time doing it but with consistency you’ll perfect the look you want.
I like this video. I did the flattop with a Landing strip for a few months. Then one morning with the Clippers at my bed side i added a # 1 and ran the Clippers right down the middles of my head just like in Boot Camp. Of course losing the nice Flattop. So there was no backing out or turning back. Buzz cut my head completely. What a rush it was and love the stubble feeling HOT !!!!
When I was younger I experimented with longer hair, but when I joined the Army I started to cut my hair like this and never turned back. If it gets longer than an inch and a half on the top now it drives me crazy.
@@TheNonnell I'm crazy right now. My hair is warm like a winter cap. I want to remove it. It would be so much easier. But can't come to a decision jet.
Great cut! But how you look like you have a perfect blend between no guard level with 3 mm ? I always get a sharp and uneven line, which really irritates me.
The 9 mm guard looks way better than the 12 mm would look in my opinion! Your hair is literally my dream cut but I’m to scared to do it cause my ears are so big
@@TheNonnell ok I just booked an appointment with my barber! It’s in January cause that’s the soonest he could book me and I sent him this video and he said I would also suit it! Ty and I’m so exited to cut off my 12 inches of hair
You did this all with a trimmer and was ok? Considering doing it today 😅. I have clippers and trimmers so just a bit confused on how to go about it. Thanks ! And great job!
😂 Yep, all with a trimmer and guards of course. I started cutting my hair about 20ish years ago, so I’ve had a lot of practice. I can’t say they were all perfect cuts at first, but I got new chance every 2 weeks and continued to improve. Best of luck! 🤞
@@TheNonnell I tried it! was a bit uneven at the top/in terms of fading it in and my trimmer died in the middle of it lol but not bad for the first time -my wife liked it and it's a cool new look that's doable on my own. I'll keep practicing till I'll nail it. Thanks for the inspiration!
That’s awesome, except the trimmer dying part 😬. It took me a while to finally get it to where I like it and where it’s reproducible, so I have no doubt you’ll get it. It’ll get better with each attempt. Happy wife happy life. Congrats on trying out the new look. 🤝
If you ask for a high n tight in my barbershop u will get a oval circle on the very top of your head with skin on the sides. Otherwise u want a high bald fade.
So you’re saying it’s what you call it? I can see that. I’m Army though so any base I’ve been to a high and tight is a specific cut. Good to know though.
I always had my hair cut high n tight when I was in the navy... But now at 53 I'm losing my hair for various reasons n need to make it appropriate for me. Don't want to pay anyone$12.50 for someone else to do it. Gotta be self reliant on this!
I hear ya. 100%. I care how my hair looks, but there was trial and error over the years. I was comfortable knowing that I may have to shave my head from time to time if I screwed up. In my opinion most of us that keep our hair short regularly won't get too bent out of shape if we have to shave it all while learning a new doo. Worth it in the end. Best of luck!
Can you please give me the same haircut, I would love to be there sitting in front of the mirror, watching you while you are giving me a very short haircut. And listening to the clippers cutting my hair and the feeling as they go across my head.
@@TheNonnell unfortunately I live in Memphis Tennessee, would really love to get together with you so you could give me a haircut like yours, only I would like it shorter across the top.
@@TheNonnell I think I might consider this for my maintenance haircut thanks. I got a problem with the front because of the weird cowlick I got on it lol
@@TheNonnell for the first time doing this cut, it wasn't really bad. Thanks to your tutorial. Btw, what's the shortest length on top have you done so far?
The shortest length I’ve gone is with a trimmer and I did my whole head. I was going to the desert for some training and didn’t want to deal with hair during that time. It was pretty low. Probably as short as you can get without taking a razor to it.
Don't worry, it took me quite a few attempts before I really mastered it. I've been following this method for more than two decades. It requires dedication and perseverance. The beauty of aiming for this style is that if you make a mistake, you can simply cut it all to the same length and give it another shot in a few weeks.
I’ve changed it up over the years, but right now I’m using a Manscape trimmer and it’s attachments. I find that it gets very close on the side of my head which I really like. Hope that helps.
Thanks. I wouldn’t categorize it as a flat top. My definition of a flat top is a flat surface once you’re finished from front to back. Mine is all one short length contoured to my head. Now, the top of my head may be flatter than others 🤷♂️ so maybe it comes across as such, but I would style it differently if I were to do a flat top.
@@TheNonnell It's like a hard mohawk without the back, so you end up with a landing strip on the crown. Apparently, it was a popular style in the U.S army some time ago.
I can see how you would think that, but a true flat top is just that, flat on top. There are differences, although slight, but those differences do change the look of the hairstyle.
Thanks! The trimmer I use is actually a "manscape" trimmer so it gets pretty close(if ya know what I mean). Besides a straight razor for the sides, do you have any suggestions for a better/closer trimmer?
