Funny how Sam would rather side with the same person who’d rather if all else fails to kill the hostages, threatened his family, blew up innocent civilians, tried to stop John walker from saving the people from falling, said she didn’t really find lamars life meaningful even then while most of her team was even almost not wanting to go through with it towards the end, and he has the audacity to call her misguided TEEN after all of that.

@@AkkatlahHonestly, I get it, but the way he was written from the pov of Sam and Bucky make it clear that he wasn't meant to be seen as a hero. He was just seen as the guy who wasn't the right choice from the getgo. Walker himself is well written, but the show frames him in such an antagonistic light because it honestly doesn't know what it wants to be. It doesn't know if it wants to be a gritty deconstruction of the same universe that created Captain America...or an idealistic fantasy. Walker is well written. He just belongs in a show like The Boys, where the universe itself is 100 percent committed to being a deconstruction of the superhero genre.

@@Akkatlah the terrorist that killed innocent civilians was martyred into a freedom fighter for politicians to "do better." As a veteran, I related to John walker more than just about any character in the MCU. He was a guy always wanting to do the right thing, selected for a position he was not sure to take but did it for the people to have their symbol. Tries to handle things peacefully and work with bucky and falcon, who do nothing but get in the way and talk down to him. Then when his best friend is killed infrint of him, he reacted the way any warrior would. And the most incredible part is that his priority after, was to visit his best friends family and give his deepest condolences. The way any honorable soldier fighting with his mates would.

Precisely. John Walker isn't an ace officer off some copaganda show. He is a soldier and was given the mantle because he is an exceptional soldier. His superiors didn't punish him in the interest of justice. They tossed him under the bus because he did exactly what he was trained to do. Had he split Nico's head open behind closed doors, they would've added him to his confirmed kills and probably ordered him to continue the mission.

What pisses me off is that the Flagsmashers kept wiping the floor with Bucky, Sam, Lamar, and John-all trained, experienced soldiers. Having super soldier serum doesn’t automatically give one incredible fighting skills. It boosts his or her stamina, strength, and speed. However, he or she would still need training to become an experienced fighter. In the finale, John and Bucky should have eviscerated the smashers because they are both enhanced and have professional fighting skills. The writers of this show are complete idiots.

In this case, it would never hold up. With a case as high profile as the US Government vs. Captain America, you'd have some of the most brilliant legal minds in the world chomping at the bit to tear the US governments case to shreds. Basically, best case scenario, the US government wouldn't punish John like they did. Because like I said, any lawyer worth their salt would dunk on this case with ease. There is literally no grounds to justify any legal action or punitive action against John for acting well within reason of his mandates. What would far more likely happen is that the government would essentially retire John and discharge him with honors. Would it be right? Hell no. But they'd want to cover this up the best they can.

This actually raises a very interesting question - how would people who have taken a supersoldier serum (i.e. any drug than enhances physical abilities to clearly superhuman ones) have been treated in an armed coflict? You can't disarm them, you can't incapacitate them without breaking their arms AND legs, you can't be sure they are really out of the fight for good even. Honestly, in a world where such superserums are a thing, every military in the world would most likely add a clause that would authorize killing any enemy who's under the influence of such a substance regardless of circumstances. No one would be willing to risk mock surrender or something from an enemy who can literally kill a person wearing body armor in one punch without trying. Which, in turn, would explain why people would be hesitant to take any substance that can fit under the description of a supersoldier serum - they would be basically putting a 'kill on sight' marker on them in every fight.

@@mr.stuffdoer8483 walker killed one terrorist in a combat situation. Whether he should have or shouldn't have is irrelevant. Steve Roger's body count with that shield is exceptionally higher than Walker's. Just watch Captain America 1 and 2. In cap 1 he kills a lot of enemy soldiers. One them he throws into an airplane propeller. In cap 2 in the boat scene he kills a man on the bridge with the shield. He kicks a man overboard leaving him to drown in the ocean. He kicks a man so hard he dents a steel pipe. If that man didn't die from the shock. He'll die from internal bleeding. What do these scenes have in common with Walker's? They were all combat situations. Before you bring up "murdering a surrendered enemy." The man never surrendered. This same man aided in an attempt on Walker's life leading to LaMar's death. During Walker's pursuit this same man ripped a concrete pylon from the ground and threw it at John. He didn't know John had the serum untill that point so it can be said that this was another attempt on John's Life. With all this information John Walker made a judgement call. "This terrorist nearly killed me twice, aided in LaMar's death, and is a clear and present danger." John Walker's killing of this terrorist is dubious at worst.

The he appears to hack the guys head off is the part that’s really designed to make him look bad. There’s a brief pause and then he just starts hacking away with the shield. It’s not exactly the right way to do it, but it was an extreme circumstance, and John was still recovering from an ambush and his friends death. Bad writing is the real problem. His character is more heroic then Sam and Bucky throughout the show but they need him to actually be lesser than them. John can throw the shield hard enough to sink it into concrete, one angry throw should’ve been enough to kill on contact. Ignoring that, he knocks Zemo out with a blow to the head. So when he hits the terrorist in the head, he should d at least be knocked out. Sam and Bucky conveniently go running off some other direction instead of after John, so they’re not able to help anyone. The flag smashers wanted to kill Captain America, but then run away when they kill Lamar, instead of going after cap again. The show doesn’t seem to know what it’s doing. They make him a hero but want him to be an anti-hero. So they undermine everything he does and then force him into a ridiculous situation and trick people into thinking he’s totally wrong.

@@rocklemillion8041 With the whole perspective on his 3 Medals of Honor, I think a lot of people/non-mil viewers get the whole thing wrong with John Walker and his awards. I've seen that a lot of TFATWS reviewers think that you're awarded a Medal of Honor for just being a stellar and good Soldier and would get one for following orders and stacking bodies... But in actuality, Soldiers are only awarded the MOH for their absolute selfless service. A Soldier is awarded the MOH for doing something that would most likely very well lead to their death and in the service of their team/unit. They knew they were most likely going to die attempting the action, but they do it anyways so others can possibly get a chance to live. Realistically, John Walker would have had to make multiple decisions in combat where he put the lives of others before his own and there was a very very high possibility of himself not making it, and just by luck he survived the ordeals. Just jumping on grenades for your team without knowing if you'll really live or not merits the MOH (even if he downplays it by saying his helmet is reinforced and whatnot). That's a really big deal. If John Walker was real, there's no Soldier in the entire country that wouldn't follow him into hell if he asked, just based on him receiving 3 Medals of Honor. Just to have one MOH is an absolute guarantee of selfless service and the character of the individual. If you've never seen it, I highly recommend searching up "the first medal of honor ever recorded".

@@rocklemillion8041 Realistically I don't doubt at all that if he killed someone in front of a crowd in a foreign country (even if they were a terrorist who threatened lives / just contributed to killing a servicemember/Lamar) that the government would sell him out to save face to the public. Stripping him of his title/position would be pretty accurate I think, but I highly doubt a well decorated SMU operator like him would be dishonorably discharged with no benefits, considering that he acted within his ROE and the flagsmashers were literal walking deadly weapons and terrorists that are still a grave danger even when "subdued". I think realistically it would probably just be swept under the rug and he would be moved or allowed to retire quietly. Also if John Walker had just pulled his sidearm out and shot him rather than brutalizing him with a shield I don't think it would have been as much of a spectacle and would have been more of a "normal" thing.

Okay, you convinced me! I see that the writers erred in not hiring a veteran as a technical advisor and having Walker kill a super terrorist in self-defense in front of civilians. They would have prevented such legal and tactical errors in the script. To present him as a war criminal, he should have killed normal civilians, recruited a private army and became a warlord and cult leader, like Col. Kurtz did in "Apocalypse Now," instead, whether by mistake, malice, or an emotional outburst. He probably should have shown criminal behavior, such as domestic violence, child abuse, a'la "The Great Santini," substance abuse or political extremism in his service record, even if it would have made his installment as Captain America unlikely. I am surprised the Army did not dose both him and Battlestar with the Super Soldier Serum when they gave him their costumes and shield. It would have saved his partner's life! Both were given super powers in the original '80s comic book. This is a failed deconstruction of the super soldier archetype. Isaiah Bradley's turn as the first Captain America in WWII was a much better "dark and edgy" deconstruction of a government that creates and deploys super soldiers: a racist, pre-Civil Rights Era government exploiting African American super soldiers during WWII and the Cold War.

We have the shocked onlookers showing their disgust when Walker kills that guy, and at the end we have the cheering crowds for "Black Falcon" at the end of the series. We also have set photo from the Ms. Marvel show of her on a street and in the background a police barrier and the public cheering her on. The problem is executing someone who has surrendered completely goes against John Walker's character. He's not once shown to be a bad person in the show, infact he's constantly doing really heroic or morally upstanding things. Remember he saves Sam and Bucky in the truck scene (only to be completely ditched by them), he offers to give them a ride back so they don't have to walk. Reaches out to them to join forces, gets Bucky out of Jail and has him cleared for duty. He's constantly trying to work with Falcon and Winter Soldier and achieve their ends, he's worried about their safety and the safety of civilians which is why he's so invested in stopping the terrorists. He's even on this mission in this clip here 'off the books' cause Sam and Bucky broke a terrorist out of prison (Zemo), so having an official record of this means those two fucks are going to prison. So he's putting his own reputation on the line to help them. And how do they thank Walker for all this? They constantly act like petty assholes to him, they even watch a pair of crazy Wakandans who think they are the world police try to kill him, they attack him in the warehouse after the kill, break his arm, steal his shield and then leave him in a foreign country wounded and alone. They don't give a fuck about Lamar's death either and Falcon even thinks the violent terrorists have a point?!? Sorry, who are the bad guys here that deserve to go to jail? Sure as fuck ain't Walker. Falcon wearing that suit and holding that shield is an absolute insult to Steves legacy. I actually liked Bucky going into this show, now I don't care if he dies or not.

I would like to point something out about that, the punch that killed Lamar (as far as I recall) wasn't to his head, throat, or even stomach. It was right on his chest, specifically his sternum. Now I'm not a doctor but I'm pretty sure that a hot to the sternum that kills a man with one impact is one that crushes/breaks all of the bone there and likely crushes the heart. The amount of force need to crush the chest cavity like that while also throwing the person's body through the air is going to be something ridiculous. I'm pretty sure if the puch was in his stomach the first would have gone through his body. Oh and there's enough force to send a fully grown man flying, but not just that. Instead of the chest bones flexing and not breaking as the energy of the punch is transfered into making Lamar fly it makes Lamar fly, and crushes his, oh and there's enough excess force from all of that to crack the solid stone pillar when he impacts it... I think the durability and power is on the level the the flag smashers can probably punch through cars. Armed and extremely dangerous indeed.

I hate saying it but its because Wanda is not a man, and John is.

I know I'm two years late but I recognized the place where John killed the Flag Smasher. It took me a few seconds but I confirmed it with Google Maps. This was undoubtedly filmed in Prague, Czech Republic. Right underneath Wenceslaus Square, if you go away from the National Museum all the way to the bottom of the square, stare at the New Yorker building, then take a cca 8 o'clock turn and go through the little passage, you end up right at the spot, at Jungmann's Square. You can see them running directly from the big, dark, wooden door, which is an entrance to a tiny little park in front of a church. The stairs where the kill happens are not actually there, that must have been added by the film crew. You can see an escalator in the background, which is the Line B entrance to the "Můstek" metro station. The concrete object the terrorist throws at John is a commonplace trashcan. They are, indeed, made of concrete and are common in the centre of Prague. Feels neat to spot such a detail in a TV show.

not sure if you are going troll on this one? propaganda and media garbage historically have PUSHED things like you just said a few times....the problem with this particular scenario, and i think its INTENTIONAL, is that the combatants are a "good boy patriot soldier willing to murder for his nation" and a small interest terrorist group fighting for idealized insanity. there is a LOT of parallels with post 9/11 insanity. the show runners are just trying to push that terrorist's are just fighting for their dreams, and therefor arent terrorists...somehow?

@@vissermatt1058 they even used that grity music to push this, so yeah. Walker did nothing wrong, the NON-SURRENDERING HUMAN WEAPON TERRORIST he killed had it coming anyway. At most, Walker should've stopped being Cap America as a PR measure. Clipped Coin is completely correct.

@@denkerbosu3551 In reality, the politician would use the death of black friend to call Flag smashers racist like they did with George Floyd. It is a perfect way to give John a way out and he will be seen as a hero who killed the racist man.

I'm three minutes in, and as a black man who once upon a time had aspirations of joining the air-force, I'm agitated... You'd think the writers would've done their research on the laws John Walker broke or didn't break when killing Lamar. But I get it, as this was meant to play to propaganda. Thing too is I'm also a writer, and B.S. like this has resolved me to give better black representation in the media than this pigeon holed garbage.

John Walker is the real hero of This story. All these stupid ass super hero movies have conditioned people to believe the good guys don’t kill when I know better from experience that sometimes the only way to truly prevent them from being a threat to you or anyone else is to arrange a meeting with Jesus. If we were doing things like we did in the old west that man would of hung for his crimes I’m just stating facts.
@garym6315

The problem with Hollywood today; feelings > facts. This is dumb enough at the best of times, but when these writers are writing cop shows, military shows, political shows...it presents a dangerous image of a world that is messed up, and impressionable SJW viewers end up believing it all. Suddenly military procedure is thrown out the window in favour of how relatable someone is.

This was a fantastic video. I really enjoyed it a lot. Now if I might chime in from a writing standpoint, I think the point of this was the fact that when placed in similar circumstances, Steve (Captain America) did not kill, but found another way. This is a universe where we have power-dampening handcuffs and Asgardians aid earth-based governments. To go back to the ROE aspect, I would see this as an excess of force. The Flag smasher is done well before John stops. It would be the same thing as if you reached an LOA after assaulting an objective, and afterwards walked back to the corpse of a fallen enemy and shot it a bunch more times. This, if reported, would absolutely be an issue for military court marshal. However, the whole point of the show was to build John Walker as a foil to Steve. He's a guy that, on paper, was the closest thing to Steve Rogers the Army could find, but close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades. He is set up as a straw man antagonist solely because he was placed into the position artificially against what had been agreed upon by Sam and the government. John technically did nothing wrong, he was not aware that Steve gave Sam the shield in Endgame, but the audience is which makes John's acceptance of this role feel inherently wrong. Now, I actually loved Walker. I think he's the best part of that show and is the only reason I am even remotely excited for Thunderbolts. However, I do agree with you, a lot of the vilifying of the character comes across as super hollow.

Ohhhhoho Steve was definitely not above killing! He had a knack for finding creative alternatives, but he was strictly a soldier. And there are multiple examples all throughout the MCU that can be found in the videos on this topic where he did some serious overkill on someone. Starting in his first movie, actually. Also, the thing about court martial? You're actually allowed to speak in your own defense before judgment is rendered. Unlike Walker, the only three-time CMOH recipient in history, who just flat out gets his benefits revoked, his service record erased and gets drummed out of the Army with an other-than-honorable discharge, which is really the same as dishonorable at that point. They did John Walker SO dirty. And I cannot wait to see Wyatt Russell bring him to life again, because he turned out SO MUCH BETTER than the show writers ever intended.

I'm not a soldier and while I have martial arts training I'm no expert. However, I am a Paralegal and thus know how Self-Defense works namely you are permitted to use lethal force against someone if that same person has already used lethal force against you or against another person and they are a threat. The Flagsmashers already did this during the fight with Lamar and after killing him they effectively became full blown murderers on sight, meaning they are now a genuine threat and thus are a danger to anyone around them. And as is pointed out in this video because they are super soldiers they are far more dangerous than ordinary people and likely unless they are unconscious or in chains or someone like Thor, Iron Man or Hulk is around, they remain a threat to all the civilians in the area. So no Walker was perfectly in line to kill that guy and the only reason he's presented as a bad guy is because he was written by modern Disney who love vilifying Straight, White, American men in order to prop up Diverse individuals like Sam who I'd like to point out immediately after this takes place assaults Walker, breaks his arm and steals the shield away from him despite Walker being given the shield by the US government, meaning Sam has NO claim to take it away from him. And what's even worse, he does more harm to Walker, a freaking veteran who just saw his best friend get murdered by Carly, yet when he goes against Carly, a mass murdering terrorist who said to Sam's face she's gonna keep killing people, he treats her with kid gloves. The longer I look at this series the more I fucking hate it and the writers for what they did. What should've been the ending of the seriesis Walker confronts the Flagsmashers in New York like we see except now he's full blown terminator and utterly destroys them without any level of mercy. Remember Walker is a decorated and well trained soldier who was in top condition before taking the serum while Carly and her group are a bunch of untrained 20 somethings who've never seen real combat. Thus Walker utterly tears them apart, crippling or killing several of the other smahers before going after Carly who tries to fight him off but John casually tanks everything she throws at him and he beats her bloody, breaking a limb or two while verbally tearing into her about all the misery she's caused, to him, to Lamar's family and so many more and that he's officially done playing nice with her. Sam and Bucky try to stop Walker but Walker is officially done listening to them, pointing out how all he wanted was to fight alongside them and work together but they spat in his face. So he murders carly right then and there.
