Each week Conrad Thompson will examine Arn’s days in the territories, becoming an Anderson, creating the Four Horsemen in the NWA, becoming a Hall of Famer, and being a producer behind the scenes for years for WWE proving “The Enforcer” has a story unlike anyone else. Known for his trademark Spinebuster and incredible “promos” in front of the camera, it’s his timing and wit that has kept “the boys” in stitches behind the scenes. Hear for yourself why ARN is the new “symbol of excellence” in professional wrestling podcasting exclusively on Westwood One Podcast Network, Tuesdays at 6am Eastern.

One of the greatest heel turns. I like how Barry Windham threw up the 4 fingers when he was walking out with JJ Dillon. I miss this era of wrestling.

That was a classic moment!!! JJ Dillon showed how crucial a role manager can play in a story line--something that is sorely lacking today. An incredible moment in wrestling history that I still vividly remember to this day!!! And Jim Ross sold the aftermath to perfection!!!

I've watch this match several times, and my belief is that some of these wrestlers deserved Oscars..... I've talked to Barry Windham a few times, he's a sweetheart of a guy... He's one that deserves an Oscar, for playing a heel convincingly... true talent.

Let’s not dismiss that Barry picked lex up who was standing outside the ring. Grabbed him. No launch at all from lex. Lex didn’t jump at all. Barry. Hooked his crotch and power slammed him standing outside the ring to inside the ring. Wow. That was brute power. Gees. Barry was a beast.

That was a great turn, no argument but if you were there in 1980' and saw what IMO was the greatest turn in Ole Anderson turning on Dusty Rhodes, that one cracked the earth. Better yet was Ole at next week on TV with Gordon Solie, that was pure magic and for as good as Ole's promo was, maybe the best ever, Gordon played his part to perfection. As for Barry, loved to watch that guy work, for such a big man he was cat like who could go in the ring. As good a Dusty was shooting a baby face promo, Barry was that much better in the squared circle.

This was the greatest Heel Turn as at the time to me. I remember seeing it as a kid, I couldn't believe it. And this was a time when Heel Turns weren't on a regular like they are today, especially in the WWE. Looking back, they built this perfectly. You can hear and feel the terror of the fans as Barry turns on Lex. Jim Ross and Tony Schiavone are TOPS! Windham fit The Four Horsemen perfectly, he even slimmed down a little more, EVERYTHING about it changed. He was SO GOOD, but they all were. I still watch 80s NWA to this day. 80s NWA still stands up today.

This is one of the best executed turns EVER! My little 17yo brain was twisted in a knot watching this. A heel turn should play out like a mystery in a novel or movie. There should be breadcrumbs leading up to the turn for sure. They should be subtle enough to justify the reveal and still be shocking once it happens. And as a long time BW fan I feel like his transition into the Horsemen really leveled him up.

I remember that turn well. I'd been watching Barry since he was in the US Express with Mike Rotunda. I wasn't able to imagine him as anything but a good guy. In fact, my initial thought was, "He's not going to be very good at being a bad guy." Glad to have been proven wrong. It was interesting, I didn't know anything about ring psychology, but I noticed that when Barry wrestled as a heel, he started to use his size and weight against his opponents in a way he never did as a face.

It was the first time I can remember the NWA World Tag Team Title changing hands in Jacksonville. I don't believe the NWA World Heavyweight Title ever changed hands. Jacksonville has always been a big-time wrestling audience in attendance and PPV. Shame on NWA for not having more titles change hands in Jacksonville. I would have worked the angle differently by having the Horsemen persuade Luger to rejoin them. After several declines by Luger, secretly Windham turns as he did in Jacksonville. Windham was a huge Baby Face over in Jacksonville from the old Florida Championship Wrestling Days.

Barry Windham’s heel turn was devastating to watch and is still the most emotional heel turn ever in my opinion. JJ Dillon screaming in Barry’s ear. “I told you he wouldn’t be there!!!” Lex hanging onto Barry only to catch a Flying Lariat. Dusty invading the locker room “What are you doin?” “Don’t turn your back on me!!!” Then Sting and Doctor Death Steve Williams using there backs to cover Dusty from getting beat. Nikita Koloff coming in to fight off the bad guys and help his comrades escape. EPIC!!!!

That is a perfect example of what is wrong with wrestling today. They don't do anything to make you truly hate the heal characters. Not a little hate, a huge hate. And the announcers sound like a Visine commercial. The just don't have any heart when calling the matches. They can't draw the viewers into the story today.
