One of the grand undertakings of our modern age is to build smart, sustainable, resilient, and equitable communities that can be managed and operated efficiently while providing community members with a high level of safety and comfort. The path to realizing such communities is inherently complex and multi-dimensional, involving various technological and social aspects. It requires fundamental shifts in the way we perceive and manage communities and related infrastructure with a special consideration on the accessibility needs of community members. In this context, this presentation will discuss some of Dr. Gül’s recent research efforts in developing smart, sustainable, and resilient communities In collaboration with Dr. Martin Ferguson-Pell and his team, Dr. Gül will propose a framework for “Crowdsensing-based Near-Real Time Monitoring of Accessibility Status of the UAlberta Campus and Buildings” for understanding the accessibility of various campus infrastructures, including pathways, pedways, stairwells, elevators, and toilets among others, using data collected from smartphones carried by individuals and combines it with imagery from strategically placed cameras to create a platform for presenting the accessibility status of our campus in a dynamic and user-friendly manner.
