I noticed "let them possess" was Slot's solution for a battle between the team that Conceding The Least Goals (Liverpool) Vs the team Creating The Most Chances (Chelsea). Chelsea didn't get at us, as some think, they were allowed to run themselves ragged whilst LFC packed the central areas. The fact that Chelsea only created one chance (nearly offside) where they were through on goal testifies to that. The big difference between Slot and Klopp is that Slot is prepared to adjust his tactics from opponent to opponent, but I would expect him to employ similar tactics against Real Madrid (another openly attacking team) next month. Klopp's Ljinders-inspired 'intensity' approach against Chelsea would have lost us that game.
Great points! Check out the Jones interview post match. Slot was willing to cede posession and passes in certain areas in order to win it back in the right areas. Although Chelsea had more shots in and around the box it was against a loaded defensive structure, it needed a worldie or mistake. Conversely area 14 was where all Liverpools danger came from.
Youre right. From my pov, it was zone 11 that gave Chelsea a misleading possession, make them believing they can control the game, but haha, it was a setup
He seems to want to force teams down the wings then trap the player with the ball against the sideline when pressing, and like you said, he doesn't mind if they manage get a cross because of the potential counter, Jones was the man chasing or waiting for the 2nd balls off our forwards, at both ends of the pitch he was man of the match, showed why he was so good the year of lockdown
Wow, really nuanced analysis. If you were to sum up in a sentence why Slot chose this particular strategy against Chelsea, what made him be fine with it? I mean you could say it was reactive not pro-active, right? That's the counter-intuitive thing about it. I mean, he's deffo got more tools in his locker than Klopp did and if your analysis is right, he will be quite a challenge for oppo to find him out. I agree he just wants to win and couldn't give a shit about the beauty contest. You're doing a great job, mate, providing really thoughtful angles to it all.
If you defend as a unit, with a plan, you can definitely defend pro-actively. By this I mean you control where the opponent attacks. You saw it against United as well, we control where you play the ball and give you one option, which is to play into the middle of the park where we'll pounce you. This game was different, but Liverpool decided that Chelsea will attack from the flanks where we were comfortable not to give away real chances. Chelsea is quite transitional and wants space to attack into while Liverpool is also deadly on counter attacks (thanks Jürgen!). Liverpool denied Chelsea the space they wanted and made them play another game.
I agree, Slot is building from defense up. Build a great defensive understanding, then get the players he wants and perfect the transition and attack. Smart
Good points, thank you! Reminds me of Brad Gilbert who wrote 'Winning ugly' (about tennis as a mental/tactical confrontation). Slot is a master in analyzing any opponents style of play and his investment in preparation is highly profitable.
The game was at the time a hard watch but that was because impo it's a game style we have not played for a very long time so it was difficult to get up & excited about. I have since watched it all over again & the tactics & game plan was absolutely bang on. Arne Slot is looking like a master tactition. Trent played extremely well in fact the whole team played well. Szoboszlai was good as a workhorse but his passing has gone out the window for the most part. Another win another 3 points & another week at the top of mountain. 97
Appreciate that mate although the septic thing is a bit old yea? I get it, but there are much more fun ways of criticizing me that I’ll laugh at. Always love a good comment 👍🏻
10wins out of 11. 8 PL, 2 CL and 1 league cup game. Ive been Curtis Jones bigggest critic but he done excellent yesterday. Hopefully he can keep this up, give Slot a lovely selection headache
I commented on that issue the day saying it was intentional the way Liverpool let Chelsea have the ball then we read their movement so that's it's easy to attack that's why always we attack. Chelsea looked vanerable each time we attacked it's was a masterclasse tactics
guy is playing controlled football and am loving it so far... am sure we wudve conceded like 8 goals at this stage after those games in epl but weve conceded 3... ive never seen a mean liverpool team like this one...long may it continue
Nah that was Jonesy mate: ⚠️ | QUICK STAT Cole Palmer's 25th-minute attempt, which was blocked by Curtis Jones, was the first shot of the huge clash between Liverpool and Chelsea.
@@AllRedShow Sorry, but we were both right (I just found Jonesys block) but in the 71th minute Szobo blocked Palmers shot as well, which Slot even mentioned in the beginning of his press conf.
Gonna disagree and say that you're conflating "being willing to cede possession" with "that's the plan". That MIGHT be the plan in response, but I don't think it was intended that Chelsea have the majority of the possession. Given the disgusting amount of passes that went astray and the constant turnovers, I don't think it was that "CLEAR" that the plan was to cede possession and hit them on the break. There's already been plenty of analysis covering Slot's tactics regarding baiting the opponent's press to open up space. It's BAITING the PRESS for space, not sitting back and letting the opponent possess and attack for space. We were at home, playing a team that right up till the almost the end of the season was distinctly mid-table. Chelsea have been in transition and upheaval for seasons. For them to come and impose their game plan on us was rather shambolic. And this is not a knock on Slot's tactics, it's knocking on the players who can't carry out Slot's preferred approach. I have no doubt Slot is already privately thinking of upgrades in several positions with players that can keep the ball better and pass better. Just because Slot is adept at controlling a game without possession and is willing to win that way does not mean this is his preferred approach. I think you've missed the mark here like Lawrence McKenna did.
Fair enough mate. See your point and well said. I don’t think slot wants this to be his long term approach by any means but he’s will to do what it takes NOW to win where other managers might be ok with a down first year as they impose their will on the team. I agree with you that Slot will look for upgrades if players can’t adapt and play at top levels in his systems. It was a shocking performance at Chelsea to be honest and yet we won and our defense was incredible minus one tiny mistake. Up the refs and thanks for the comment mate!
Sorry, but the 'plan was to let Chelsea have the ball' is bollocks. They had better possession because they closed us down well and our passing was so sloppy. Your theory also goes against everything that Slot has said about the importance of keeping possession within his system. We weren't set up to work as a primarily counter-attacking team either. That was clear as day by the players positioning.
Our passing was shockingly bad all game. I couldn’t believe it. Szobo, Salah (except for his assist), Trent, Kelleher. Obviously they were doing that on purpose but the plan was to defend at all cost and let jones run riot. It worked. Up the reds.
@@AllRedShow Jones even said post match though that Slot wants them to have the ball all the time. Hardly tallies with "the plan was to let Chelsea have the ball" does it. There is a marked difference between wanting the opposition to have possession and controlling where they have possession when they have it. We did the latter, but you are suggesting the former, which is not the case.
True mate. You’re right. I was trying to explain away how awful we were in possession, saying that our wing backs didn’t support the attack and a lot of times we just tried to dink it up to Mo who wasn’t really excited about doing that all game. It was clear slot wanted to defend first.
No … I meant Trojan horse. I think slot knew Chelsea would under estimate jones as an attacking force. Gakpo, Jota and Salah were distractions while jones ran free in the oppo box
Ya I think Slot has this plan in mind to use Jones against Chelsea. He mentioned in his press con he has every reason to use Jones and Gakpo in this match.
